  2. Looks to me like the Cubs outscored the opponents by 47 runs from the 6th inning and on (not counting extras). What's wrong with that? That's 12 runs an inning over the course of a year. What's wrong with improving that number? Or, to put it in other words, what is wrong with going from having an average to good pen to a good to great pen? It still improves the team, correct?
  3. Instead of wasting your thoughts away on pipe dreams, how 'bout you come up with some possible scenario where the Cubs could actually acquire those two without giving up some key component for next year's team? I don't see the Cubs just sitting around with an extra Coco Crisp to throw the Red Sox way and please don't suggest Patterson. So many fans here seem insistant on focusing on the "why not" rather than the "how"...no wonder so many have a warped sense of reality. Of course, playing video game GMs have that impact sometimes....
  4. Well how about Milton Bradley or Brad Wilkerson. Both were traded this offseason, and therefore were available. Either would look a lot better in RF than Jones right now. -Banghart I wasn't aware that the Cubs had someone the likes of Alfonso Soriano to offer up for Wilkerson. Not a fair example. So many of you want your cake and to eat it too. Texas had to give up proven major league talent to get Wilkerson. Who could the Cubs have given up? Walker? please.
  5. The fact that the bullpen next year could be very, very good...that is one of the reasons I think it is unfair to say Hendry has had an bad offseason. Eyre and Howry really solidify that pen. It could be a very special unit. People are ripping on Hendry must be doing so essentially because they aren't happy about who will be the starting RF. Not that I necessarily am happy about Jones, but there is more to the offseason than just one position.
  6. True, but at the cost we paid for Jones, and the likely cost to aquire Kearns, is it worth it? You could have signed Eric Byrnes for a $1m deal if you wanted to platoon Jones. I think Kearns has more upside than Byrnes. I'm not sure that is really saying much. That said, Kearns has a world of talent...just not sure he has a body that will stand up for a whole year so he can effectively show that talent for 500-600 ABs.
  7. That is possible, yes. However, anyone who thinks that Pierre will outperform Michaels this year is *clearly* not in"sane".
  8. Michaels career: .291/.380/.442/.822, 113 OPS+ Pierre's best season ever: .326/.374/.407/.781, 107 OPS+ Michaels has been the superior offensive player. The only argument you could make is that Michaels for some reason wouldn't duplicate those numbers over the course of a full season. His numbers v. RHP are pretty much the high end of what to expect from Pierre, so his splits aren't any help in that aspect either. Oh, i think I have quite an argument in Pierre's favor that centers on speed on the basepaths as well. A little number that is in Pierre's favor by a landslide, yet hasn't been mentioned at all in this thread. Any objective discussion comparing the two players should obviously contain talk of stolen bases. Especially when we are talking lead off hitters here.
  9. Some of you guys take this love of yours for OBP way too far. And, on top of that, some of you guys put FAR too much weight into Pierre's season last year while seemingly forgetting the numbers he put up the two years before.
  10. *shakes head* No where in that article did it say that the exact same combination of players that Hendry spent for Pierre could have netted Huff. It's people piling inferences upon inferences around here (like this) that leads to a lot of unbased assumptions and creates a lot of unnecessary finger pointing.
  11. Who would be the backup shortstop? Not a fair comparison. I mean, why don't you also say that the Cubs should have Kevin Millar on the bench rather than Henry Blanco?
  12. way too much has been made abour pierre's bas year. he still hit what .275 and stole what 50-60 bases? both his request, prior, and zambrano's are legitimate in my opinion. OBP of .326 at leadoff is around the team OBP of the cubs last year. terrible. that's what pierre is paid to do, get on freaking base. It's also one freaking year.
  13. They seemed to get a little lucky with Dempster.
  14. Clement would be fine to have for the regular season I guess. I question the guy's mental toughness. He doesn't seem to be worth a damn down the stretch or in the playoffs.
  15. I guess we'll see. Personally, I don't have a whole lot of faith in what Bruce says either. Most of the time, it seems like he is just reporting something in order to keep getting radio time.
  16. Some of you guys give these reporters FAR too much credibility. It's not about giving reporters more credibility than they deserve; rather, it's the likelihood of Neifi starting at 2B given: a) Hendry missed on Furcal, b) Walker is still on the block, and c) Dusty is still the manager. Just the same...far from any "confirmation". And how do we know that Walker is still on the block? Especially for a deal involving something other than another middle infielder in return?
  17. Some of you guys give these reporters FAR too much credibility.
  18. I mean why not? He was a popular alternative around these parts a couple of years ago. And there were countless posts around here *lambasting* Hendry for not signing him. Or was it "letting him go to the Mets"...like it was all under his control or something? Do those same people think the Cubs should look at him as an alternative to filling the hole at SS? Or maybe was he just not the savior at SS that some of you made him out to be? Just curious.
  19. because our organization steers clear of guys who get on base, as a rule. hendry won't sign him because we might win with him, which would make his previous philosophy look worthless. GM's like hendry don't all of the sudden change their "conventional" ways for ways that are proven better, they just go out after guys who "can catch the ball", pitch one inning of relief, bunt, and/or steal bases and call it a day. if we make any trades, they won't be for abreu, who actually steals bases well. Oh, I see. So Hendry did *not* acquire Matt Lawton for the stretch drive last year? K, got it. Silly me...I thought he did grab Lawton (along with his impressive OBP).
  20. Maybe Ohman is now possible trade bait. Also, I'm not going to judge this signing until I see how Eyre does in a Cubs uniform. I guess all the "Mr. know it Alls" here know what the market is regarding LOOGY's as FA's. NOT!!!! Give it a chance all you pessimists & overreacter's! Maybe the optmists should give it a rest. Almost 4 mil for a loogy. Yeah! Just because he is left handed doesn't mean he has to be only a LOOGY. Christ, look at his BAA against righties. Very solid.
  21. But if we land those two guys and have Cedeno at second, we AREN'T a contender?
  22. And if Cedeno ends up being a mediocre offensive player (.260/.320), where does that help them in the grand scheme? That's my question too. You can tolerate .260/.320 from a good defensive SS, but not from a 2B, and Cedeno's defensive talents would be wasted at 2B. I absolutely HATE the idea of moving him there. I don't see how you can HATE it. He is MUCH better defensively than Walker. He will be cheap for years to come. Last year (albeit a small sample size), he had a comparable BA/OBP to Walker. I have no problems at all with Cedeno playing 2B if the Cubs get Furcal. It is less of a problem having a lighter bat at 2B if they have decent bats at SS and CF, the other typically light hitting positions. If they sign Furcal, then they have more leeway in having a lighter hitting 2B. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Cedeno in the 8 hole.
  23. We'll see how things go in the second quarter with this 25 mph wind at Iowa's back.
