  1. Other teams have alternative power sources like sac flies with men on third and less than 2 outs, suicide squeeze plays, etc. We live and die by the long ball on offense.
  2. According to this http://highboskage.com/daily-stats/special-data/team-defense.shtml We are behind St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Mil. and Houston in team defense...
  3. yeah look how many championships and winning teams sandberg and his buddies' respect for the game brought. yeah, barrett made that mistake because he doesn't respect baseball or its fans. are you serious? believe it or not, ryno's made a dumb mental error too, as with every mlb player in history. Did I ever say Barrett? It's a collective issue with this team all year. People don't hustle and just don't focus. Ryno may have made a mental error, but always hustled. Yes. Ryno didn't win and I'm not saying those teams were great. But, I do wish everyone had his attitude to focus on the fundamentals and little things that win games, like covering first base, hitting the sac fly, etc. Although I was not making any attempt to compare Ryno's team to the current team. (Why do people keep reading more into this than was written?) The teams Ryno was on often failed due to lack of talent. The current team has had a lot of failure due to lack of execution and fundamentals.
  4. kudos to you for somehow finding a way to bash patterson when discussing a game that he wasn't in the state for. i've been trying to think of a way to do that because i too blame him for last night's loss. the negative energy he left when he was sent down to AAA is still having an ill effect on the cubs. damn him! I'm not just ranting about last nights loss. I'm talking about an organizational philosophy. I only mention Corey as the poster boy of the fact that potential does not make someone a good baseball player and this team needs to focus on baseball players that know how to play the game. I buy that, but can you give me an example of a Cub who is a malcontent, since that's what you called them? I see some guys on that team that aren't fundamentally sound, aren't well-rounded players, or are even somewhat baseball-dumb, but can't really think of any malcontents. Malcontent meaning one who rebels against an established system. Some of the players clearly don't understand the very fundamentals of the game such as moving runners over, taking pitches, sacrafice flies, etc. They rebel against the established system of the game of baseball and winning by thinking they will do it their own way and ignore the advice of coaches and the way the game is played.

I only mention Corey as the poster boy of the fact that potential does not make someone a good baseball player and this team needs to focus on baseball players that know how to play the game. you have no idea about how well corey focuses on the game. he's never made a mental mistake comparable to barrett's late inning buffonery. or failing to cover first base after two other guys had failed to do it just a couple innings before. to say corey is the poster boy for lack of fundamentals when he didn't even participate in last night's fundamental disaster is just you taking every oppurtunity to bash someone who you obviously don't like. it would be like me bringing up neifi's sub-.300 obp while discussing last night's west tenn game. Hello. Someone's not listening. I'm refering to the organization as a whole at that point and not just last night's game. Why can't I refer to Corey when I'm refering to the organization putting to much emphasis and value on potential versus actual baseball players. The organization views Greenberg as a backup and Corey as a starter because of Corey's potential when the fact is that Greenberg appears to be a more fundamentally sound baseball player. I'm not blaming him for last nights lost, never said that.

  7. Is that the Jeopardy them playing in the background? I need more time..... Actually, we do a good job of making pitcher's with 5.0+ ERAs look like aces and we are good at making other teams feel good about themselves.
  8. A game like last night following Ryno's speech about respect for the game and fundamentals is embarassing. Our collective group of malcontents simply don't get it. A lazy effort to the fundamentals of the game is disrespectful to the game and the fans that show up to watch the game. They just don't get it. Yet, the malcontents will continue to play for this team without repercusions. It's like they aren't familiar with the surface of the planet and no one is willing to show them where it is. Few players on the current Cubs roster are even fit to hold Sanberg's jock strap, yet alone represent this franchise in the post season. It's clear to me that they don't have enough respect for the game to hustle for everything they get. The organization needs to say enough is enough and focus more on developing baseball players like Adam Greenberg (who has demonstrated his ability to do what is needed to win short of hitting home runs) and let go of the overhyped and game challenged players like Corey Patterson (who has done nothing more than prove he can swing the bat with authority whether or not it happens to make contact with the ball). A lack of talent is easy to swallow, a lack of effort and respect for the game makes me want to hurl. End of rant.
  9. Yes. The players have to stop swinging away on everything, but it's a contagious approach that the cubs have not put s stop to all year. It may be too late at this point in the year with us needing to catch up in the wildcard, but this is the kind of stuff that when it happens early in the year, the players get benched, etc. until they get the point that the approach is not tolerated. Problem is that the Cubs have tolerated it all year, that includes Baker. A little discipline would help Baker, but he tries to be a well liked players' manager.
  10. Sort of. Wow, you complain over an rbi. I just had an arguement how I hate people being optimistic about this team, but, jeez bash someone for a rbi. If you were being sarcastic/joking, scratch my comment. Lawton & Barrett failed to do their job that inning, not Macias. Barret failed. Lawton had no choice but to get a hit or base on balls, really not a whole lot of options. Barrett can make an out and get the job done, but failed.
  11. Am I the only one that feels a little bit uncomfortable relying on our bullpen for 5 innings? I hope this is the game where they pull it together.
  12. 5 words, in no particular order. Is. Baker. Idiot. Dusty. An. Do you really have to ask that? No. Didn't need to ask... I know the answer, but just needed to confirm this wasn't a nightmare.
  13. Wow! I can put the ice cream back in the fridge. No need to drown my Cubby sorrows. Wow!
  14. Anyone up in the pen? Why in Dempster still in there if this is clearly not his day?
  15. It's tough to write this, but... go Cards!
  16. First up Burnitz got caught at first thinking the runners at second and third were running on a wild pitch. They didn't, he couldn't get back, and he got tagged. Then A-Ram hit a single on the ground to left, scoring both Lawton and Lee. Yes. I know the world will have done the same thing, too, but here's my take. Thanks. The several post on grandslams and DPs was confusing.
  17. Yahoo and sportsline are very slow. Can someone sum up what happed there since there are post on grandslams and double plays, etc...
  18. Come on ARAM, single or fly ball here.
  19. Whenever it looks like we should pull the pitcher out for any reason in a previous inning, the other team always burns our pitchers in the following inning. I hope this isn't another example of that.
  20. I can't remember if Hendry promised Hollandsworth more playing time or if that was Dusty or if what he was promised was an honest shot at earning the starting job in LF. Does anybody have a link to a quote or something better than my shotty memory? And I think Cedeno's call-ups were out of necessity. Who else on the roster was going to play SS if Neifi got injured? Would you have preferred Hendry to keep Enrique Wilson around? Granted, it was far from the ideal situation for Ronny's development, I'm sure we would all agree that the best thing for Ronny would have been to play everyday no matter where he was, but at least he got to "watch and learn from the veterans". Seriously, though, there has to be some benefit from being in the bigs as a 22-year-old. Maybe he'll be a bit more relaxed and able to perform at his highest level when/if he actually does see the field because he feels like he belongs there. Hendry absolutely should have kept Wilson in Chicago and left Cedeno in Iowa. If Neifi got injured Cedeno could have been called up to Chicago within 24 hrs. Releasing Wilson and calling up Cedeno accomplished nothing but hurting Cedeno's progress. If Neifi's backup was just going to rot on the bench I'd rather have had trash like Wilson do the rotting. The only problem is that Baker has shown a propensity to play bench players even when they are as awful as Wilson. I never forget how he started Wilson against the Yanks cause he played in Yankees stadium before. It simply didn't occur to Dusty that Wilson was no longer with the Yanks because he stank up the joint. He would have played Wilson more often than he has played Cedeno.
  21. Last Non-Interim Manager before Dusty was Don Baylor. If Chicago news papers didn't want Dusty because of his skin color, then why did they lobby for his hiring after Don Baylor was terminated? Scoop Jackson doesn't live on the surface of the planet on this one.
  22. I would think almost any team would....even this year. His defense and speed and potential bat make him a great 4th/5th OF this year or even a starter if needed. But he's ours...back off :D So what you're saying is: "That's my Pie!" Let them eat cake, Pie is ours.
