  1. Why do you say they were going to suck. Before the fire sale they had one of the best pitching staffs in the majors. They also had a top 5 outfielder a very good 2nd baseman. They would have compteted, especially with what is going on in Atlanta. I totally disagree with that. 2 of the key cogs in that pitching staff are now gone, so their staff in '05 is completely irrelevant.
  2. Id rather take my chances on nomar's groin issues than have a starting outfield with Jones, Encarnacion, or Patterson in it.....and if Walker gets dealt.....then Id rather see Nomar take that spot and play the odds....at least then Neifi could back him up and give him some time off.
  3. yea...I dont understand why we didnt keep Nomar for another year.....we could really use him as this team is still ridden with holes that need to be fixed. That is one move that I think Hendry is a dumba$$ for not making. And the more I think about it, the more I come to the conclusion that this team will be going nowhere with Hendry and Crusty!
  4. If I were the cubs, I'd trade Patterson for some Gatorade and vicodin.
  5. And there's no need for smarta$$ retorts either. I read these posts more than I actually post for the following reasons... The majority of what goes on here .... 1. Im smarter than you 2. Mine is bigger than yours and you're wrong 3. 90% of what goes on here isnt "FUN" talk....its bickering and arguing I love the speculation and all the number crunching freaks and I enjoy reading it.....thats about it.
  6. I think the 40 page Bobby Howry thread was out of control. There have been hundreds (guess) of pages on Dunn with no basis for fact. How is this any different? The Dunn thread over the summer at least had some radio talk and speculation behind it....AND, Hendry HAD contacted the Reds - that's the difference. Hendry has not made any contacts about Tejada, NOR has there been any speculation. As for Howry, he's a cub now - which is the obvious difference..... Actually, a few have reported that XM stated the Cubs have contacted the O's about Miggy. I believe that qualifies as contacts and speculation. I listen to XM175 all day long - every single day. I have heard no mention of the Cubs contacting the O's. It it was something I missed, I stand corrected. However, very few minutes in my day pass without 175 on.
  7. I think the 40 page Bobby Howry thread was out of control. There have been hundreds (guess) of pages on Dunn with no basis for fact. How is this any different? In any case, none of it has any bearing on what actually happens, so what difference does it make? I apologize if that's not what you are getting at nolan, but I'm getting a little tired of hearing people say "Don't propose Dunn trades, it will never happen." So what? Who cares? This is an interesting philosophical discussion so whether it could happen or not is pretty irrelevant. I just think these threads are an excuse for members to argue with each other for absolutely no reason cause he won't be a cub. If you want to argue, argue about REAL POTENTIAL MOVES, OR MOVES WEVE ALREADY MADE.

  9. I can't believe we have a 19 page thread on a player who has absolutely no chance of coming to the Cubs. It's one thing if we've got a Dunn rumor or something and there's been talk about a trade on the radio or through writers and whatnot.....but this is out of control. Tejada has ZERO chance of being a Cub next year - Bank on it! Also, you can bank on the fact that Hendry won't be trading Pie for anything.
  10. They should be though because they will never overtake NY or Boston with their core. None of those guys you list CPatt, Hill, Williams, Pie, Cedeno is likely to ever be a difference maker. Tejada is for 2006. Normally I agree with you but I think you are crazy if you pass up a chance to win in 2006 to keep those four. I strongly disagree.....there is absolutely NO way you can predict if any of those guys is going to be a difference maker. Willis had a horrendous season with us @ A before we let him go - and he seems to be quite the difference maker.
  11. I agree on the offense, but Williams may be gone by season start via trade for the offense Maddux SHOULD be gone by season start Wood isnt expected to be ready by season start by management that leaves us Z and Prior...I am worried.... exactly...... I wouldn't mind seeing Millwood, but not for the $ it'd take......get us Zito Hendry, PLEASE!
  12. Wow - I think if I were the orioles, I'd hop on that offer in a heartbeat.
  13. I'm really excited that we got Pierre, and I'm looking forward to seeing him this year! I like the threat he provides when he's on base, with that kind of speed you can definitely get in a pitcher's head - and let's face it....on the cubs, every little bit helps a ton. I'm also gonna like those times we've actually got a runner on 2nd when Walker/Lee/Ramirez come to the plate. I know he's not the greatest defensively, however, I think he's gonna be a nice addition to the club.
  14. No one was "snagging" Giles unless his name was Towers. I think we need to get past that. I'm "past" it....I was never really that much "for" it at the time anyways, so your comment is completely irrelevant in regards to my opinion. If I would've had some foreshadowing at the time, I probably would've been more for signing Giles when he was available, which is all I was saying.
  15. We've got the cash and the prospects to get this done - we need more of an impact and less of a risk in RF AND we should snag a good SP as well. The less risks this team takes, the better. Starting Williams all season is a risk, imo. Wood is already going to miss the first few games, which leaves us with an opening day rotation of Prior, Z, Maddux, Williams and Rusch - that isnt good enough to get the job done, we need a DOMINANT pitching staff for this team to win. I want to see another quality pitcher in that rotation eating up innings. In regards to the RF bat, we need someone with some power and high obp - should've snagged Giles when we had the chance.
  16. I think Pittsburgh should have a decent team next year - their starting pitching staff should be good, they picked up another bat and if they're able to snag yet another, they should be looking considerably better offensively as well. Not to sure about that bullpen, though...... Perez Maholm Duke Wells Fogg Redman That's not a shabby rotation.....
  17. In response to us having Coleman, yes, he did help out in spring training last year - and I thought he helps us out in the minors as well.
  18. yeah, I think a MI of Walker/Cedeno sounds great to me as well. I hope Walker stays :D Spend those extra prospects and $ on quality RF bat and likewise SP.
  19. Prior shouldn't be involved in any talks at all, bottom line.....they can keep Abreu and his pricey contract and we'll hang onto the top tier pitcher.
  20. We all know you love Wilkerson. I think you might get your wish, though. It's no secret that Jim Bowden has always been infatuated with c-patt. Corey + Guzman + Nolasco = Wilkerson That seems like ALOT to give up for Wilkerson..... and I stiil can't figure out why we're targeting Gathright - what's the difference between him and Hairston?
  21. Why do people consistently say Prior is injury prone? It's absolute garbage. I agree.....every columnist always makes some remark about Prior and injuries - its bogus!!
  22. It's irrelevent just because you didn't bring it up before? That doesn't make sense to me. Ryan is as good as Wagner, and younger. Unfortunately for your scenario, Ryan was a free agent this year, not next year. Why does he need 1 more year? His peripherals are outstanding and they did not take a hit after moving to closer. He blows away hitters, keeps them off base and doesn't give up runs. He did it as a set-up man and as a closer. He doesn't have to prove anything. Dempster got the job done, but he was not dominant, often teetering on the edge because he walks more and lets more guys on base, without being able to dominate with the strikeout. He relies on his defense, and is far less proven than BY Ryan is. BJ can dominate on his own. He's better. agree to disagree....cause this could go on all day long..... I never maintained that Ryan wasn't a quality closer or that his stuff wasn't excellent. It is irrelevAnt that you brought Wagner into the discussion - comparing a guy who's been closing for one year to somebody of Wagner's stature. Wagner's #'s this year were considerably better than Ryan's, and he has 284 career saves compared to Ryan's whopping 42.
  23. No, that should be their #1 priority last offseason. You must change your priority list based on the current year's WS champions. This is why I'm concerned about the apparant need for speed, they are 2 years late since Florida hasn't won since 2003. If the Cubs win in 2006, everybody will want ivy in the OF, wrist bands on the manager and drunks in the stands. It's the only way. Goony, as much as we seem to disagree on here, I'm gonna have to snag that quote and throw it in my sig....that's the best line I've EVER heard on here. Hats off to you :D
