  1. I read in the Tribune today that Zambrano was possibly going to be given some pinch hitting duties to give him a shot at the most hits in a season by a Cubs pitcher. While I think Big Z is a better option than a lot of the bench, I don't like the idea of the less than nimble Zambrano running the basepaths any more than he has to.
  2. With Federer winning the US Open, I got to wondering which athlete has dominated their sport more: Roger or Tiger?
  3. Hey Len! Just wanted to thank you for the integrity and knowledge that you bring to the games. My question is: is there any one game (with the Cubs or otherwise) that sticks out in your mind as "the most exciting game you've ever called"? From a Marquette student to a Marquette grad, best of luck to you.
  4. The way I look at it is this: I hope the Cubs finish this season strong due to the contributions of Murton and Cedeno. If this pushes us to playoff contention then so be it, but that should be the furthest thing from our minds. However, if Cedeno and Murton do not get playing time, I hope the Cubs plummeting record tells Hendry that enough is enough and that Baker gets fired. More than likely, reality falls in the middle....
  5. I agree completely about the no exceptions. But I guess I am willing to show "acceptance" (as compared to forgiveness) for an honest forthright individual admitting a mistake and stopping like Luis Castillo of the San Diego Chargers. I don't think Morse or Castillo are looking for sympathy, but I will give them credit for having the balls to tell the whole story (unlike certain players who go "I don't know how these things got in my body).
  6. I got to thinking about what happened to Mike Morse and its implications. If we are to believe that he stopped taking steriods in '03 and has been suspended three times for that incident, are we happy about the testing results? I think the testing is working, but is it fair if it nails guys who stopped, particularly two years after? I know baseball is acknowledging that he no longer takes the steriods, but that it can't make exceptions. I don't know how I feel to be honest, just posing the question to see what others think.
  7. I've heard people saying that when Letterman retires, then Jon Stewart would inherit the gig on CBS. If that's the case, after Leno's retirement, who do you watch? Conan or Jon? I don't know if I could make that decision!
  8. I don't really mind it when Schilling opens his mouth because it is usually a mature response. Wells is just dumb, but Buerhle's accusations are lame because there is really no way to prove him wrong and he knows it. I am curious about this: while the Rangers obviously hit better at home than away, is there also a sizable opponents difference? Mainly, while we can expect the home team to perform better at home than the away team in a hitter's park, can we find stats that prove that ALL teams perform much better in Arlington? Would love to shove that proof in Buerhle's face.
  9. If I had said that Sammy Sosa was going to be an Oriole late last August, I would have been laughed off the forum. It wasn't until Sammy left early that the door was opened. So maybe Dusty will be out yet. Have faith that a lot can change in a month. It may be misguided, but I know I'm crossing my fingers...
  10. Well, let's say Rothschild does go. Who should replace him? As far as pitching coaches go, I know Mazzone and Mike Maddux aren't going anywhere. Is there someone who would be an upgrade over Rothschild as compared to change for change's sake?
  11. Just an update on the batboy. Apparently he's got some people in his corner willing to pay for lost wages and there's a promotion at the Fort Meyers Miracle game. I'd say it was worth it! http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2143002
  12. Tonight's Sign of the Apocalypse: Rafael Palmeiro was suspended ten games for taking steriods while a Florida Marlins batboy was suspended for six games for accepting and failing a dare from the Los Angeles Dodgers to drink a gallon of milk in under an hour without throwing up. Seriously, this is ridicious. Seems Brad Penny had some choice words for the Marlins too. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2142263
  13. I know this is optimism talking, but each of those matchups are doable. If we sweep them (always a difficult task, but possible), we are only 3.5 games back of the 'stros. That's not bad at all. We're not out of it, especially with so many other teams involved. But a large part of our fate is in our hands.
  14. With Lee's change in stance came the ability to hit inside pitches. With his shoulder ailing him (playing everyday with it is not helping it heal), he has been stuggling. But he's a grinder, so you won't hear him complain. That being said, if Lee remembers what made the first half of his season so memorable, I don't see why he can't become a .300-.310 hitter for the next few years. I see it as a reasonable increase. As it is, I figure he'll end this season in the high .330s.
  15. Sorry Vance. Dierker will probably have to go in under Other since people have started voting. Won't allow me to add any more choices.
  16. Whoops. My bad. Added Fredi and an Other choice too..
  17. CPatterson20's right. We don't know how Girardi would do since he has no previous experience. But if managers were chosen only on previous experience, how would capable candidates (like Girardi) get a shot? Someone has to give every manager a chance somewhere down the line.
  18. These are the names I hear thrown around the most. Also wondering if your choice is what the Cubs WOULD do as well.
  19. I'm very much intrigued by Girardi as a possible candidate for manager. If I'm not mistaken, he grew up a Cubs fan so he would probably at least listen to an offer. I know the Marlins really want him and the Yankees are grooming him to succeed Torre as well. My question is twofold: would you take a gamble on a manager without a track record for next season? If so, would Girardi let the rookies play?
  20. Maybe Hill isn't an answer for this team long term, but can you honestly base the guy's performance after three starts (and a few relief appearances). I agree that Hill might be overrated, but that doesn't mean he won't be very solid either. It's too soon to tell, so I'm not going to jump to conclusions yet.
  21. Bump. Just curious if opinions are changing. I frankly can't make up my mind on it. Wondering about everyone else.
  22. Well, how long until Farnsworth becomes the next elite closer for the Braves?
  23. Just out of curiousity's sake, if Manny becomes a Met, does he take his RBI lead with him to the National League? Cuz if he does, then Lee's got a big stumbling block towards a Triple Crown race.
