  1. Cards only have 1 run at home vs Florida tonight - need to come to NSBB for some entertainment.
  2. some of the answers in this thread are quite hilarious - Kennedy tops that list. Just awful. Crap look at Darryl Ward's weekend. . . it happens to everyone. Big Papi had next to no takers when he was a FA coming from Minnesota. This stuff happens. The way some of the Cub fans talk, you would think the Cards dominate the head to head series. I think the Cubs lead that.
  3. you mean everyone else' luck is to hit 3 dingers in 2 games? wow that is rotten luck.
  4. Saying that the game was lost on one bad pitch to Ward is "excuse-making?" Sure Reyes probably wasn't perfect other than that. The fact remains that the Cubs have scored a bunch of runs on very few hits in the series. Why so overly sensitive about the way the Cards media is scrutinizing Reyes' start? Who cares? I think this illustrates the difference between being a player/fan of the Cardinals and being a player/fan of the Cubs. had the roles been reversed, the Cubs media would be absolutely trashing the Cubs for that loss (and the national media would give no mention of the bad call whatsoever). but I think what you are also missing is it is not only the media making those comments, it's LaRussa. as for how many runs have been scored vs. how many hits, that's fricken baseball, and that's sports in general. should we get into how many of the Cardinals hits yesterday were weakly hit but found holes and how many Cubs outs were hard hit atem' balls? I usually read through the Cub game threads at work because I enjoy seeing good baseball fans discussing a day game - but recently it's been kinda deep in there, IMO. Not used to seeing that on this board. Cause we haven't been in a "pennant race" for 3 years. When emotion and fandom comes into play, you get a lot less intelligent talk and a lot more Ron Santo.(And there's nothing wrong with that, it's a lot more fun to have that much interest in a game rather than counting down til Dusty gets fired, and asking just how he can play Macias that much.) Adding the Cardinals into the mix only multiplies things. Agreed on all counts. I'm sure you guys don't want it - but if the Cards fall out of the race again (as they should) I will be rooting for you guys to get some playoff success. It is certainly overdue. There is nothing better than meaningful baseball in September / October. Just be careful of Marquis - he can bite you in the rear awfully fast.
  5. Can't we tip our hat to the guy and move on? No, we can't. This is the Cards, remember? When they lose it's a million excuses why it was just unlucky. Of course when they win it's a celebration of how awesome they are  Oh come on. I was in the game thread the other day and every time Ludwick made a play in the OF I read about how only the Cards get so lucky as to find OFs who make decent plays in the OF. Yes - I can definitely tip my hat to Ward and move on. Just like I did Jacque Jones ( who apparently is now an allstar ) after his performance Friday. Can we stop with the "cards are so lucky" theme? They aren't. Not in Wrigley. 1985, 1987, 2000, 2002, 2004 - all prime examples of poor luck. Yes 2006 was luck but hell if you make it to the postseason a number of years in a row you are bound to get lucky once. I've personally never seen somebody complain about '87, '00, or '02. And judging a fanbases's opinions on their kneejerk responses in a game thread isn't going to tell you much of anything. I can't stop saying Cliff Floyd sucks whenever he's playing, but it doesn't mean I want him off the team. Dempster and Howry can't come into a game without 10 people going on rants about how horrible they are. People were saying they'd rather see Pignatiello in a game than Wood yesterday. Loony stuff happens in a game thread. That is true - game threads and online fans in general do not represent the fanbase well. '87 - Coleman injury '00 - Matheny injury / Ankiel collapse '02 - Rolen injury, ran into by A Cintron.
  6. I forgot to mention that - thanks. LaRussa gets such a bad rap from opposing and even home team fans that it is nice to see him defended occasionally.

LaRussa is backing his guy - that is his job - to motivate Reyes. He isn't going to trash his players to the media. Would Piniella do that? As for the media - how do players or fans control them? Just because Mariotti knows how to get you guys going doesn't mean STL needs a Mariotti to constantly kick them in the nuts. That is irrelevant. Yes - the hits / runs aspect is baseball. Nobody is arguing that. Why you guys have such a big problem with TLR's choice of motivating his players is beyond me. I would not want to root for a team where the manager calls out his players. Reyes knows his issues - he pitches well for many innings and then lays a turd in one. Walks, HBP, single and homer - game. Should LaRussa chastize him through the media? That makes no sense. And yes, it is baseball. The luck comment is just a reaction to the large amount of woe-is-me going on in the recent game threads. I usually read through the Cub game threads at work because I enjoy seeing good baseball fans discussing a day game - but recently it's been kinda deep in there, IMO. Not used to seeing that on this board. Here's to a couple good games to finish off the series. Hopefully the Cards can get one of the two. If not, I'll say you are welcome for sweeping the Brewers.
  8. How is he a retread? because the real word would come out to be "recards" due to the word filter. 5th team in 5+ years?

  10. He's a retread that got lucky. . wait - I forgot that only happens to the Cards, not the Cubs - I forgot.

  12. Didn't Jones just make a great catch? Only Cubs do that?
  13. Brewers have a forum? Should be a slobberknocker of a weekend coming up. .
  14. How many times is Joe Morgan gonna tell me that Luis Castillo has been a long time American League player? First the Twins traded long time Twin Castillo, now he's never played in Wrigley. 2003?
  15. Unfortunately, from my experience the Cubs have more than a lot of teams. I'm not sure. I'm a Cards fan from central Illinois, grew up not hating the Cubs, but surely huge rivals. I guess I hated them when they were better. Anyway - lived in Chicago, have many great friends who are Cub fans, real fans, went to a ton of games. You sit somewhere other than the bleachers and you get some great, knowledgeable baseball and Cub fans. I have no problem with that.
  16. every team has idiot / trashy fans the Cubs fans that fit that description sit in the bleachers. I was at the day / night DH in Sept 2003 and listened to what seemed to be a normal Cub fan tell the world how Kenny Lofton was one of the best defensive CF in the game. True story.
  17. Yep - we saw Sammy's hop quite often during the glory years. And Albert is the worst. I don't know why nobody does anything to him. Sorry Keener for adding another perspective to this thread full of, well, other perspectives. Sorry, I just have to many Cards fans friends that jump all over everybody else for showboating but think what Albert does is nothing. You admit to it so again Ill apologize. But I will say this, Sammys hop to me is nowhere near as bad as doing what Soriano did, or what Albert does. Sammys hop lasted for a split second, where as the others soak it up for quite a bit longer. No problem. I used to live in the middle of this rivalry (C-U) and know what that is like. Albert has been real surly like that ever since the Lidge homer. That's the funny thing about all these - I don't think anyone is really trying to show anybody up, Soriano, Sosa, even Albert. Especially Soriano. What is ok and not ok in baseball is pretty much clear as mud sometimes. But I've never seen anybody do what Soriano did, and that is probably why this happened. If Young went at Lee's head / wrist - that is totally uncalled for.

  19. This did not stand out to you? I think you are being a little homerish, he ran to the base backwards. It does not compare to a bat flip, Sammy's hop, whatever.
  20. Weaver vs. Marquis. . . wow Has Marquis faced Suppan yet? Or Morris yet? Or Williams yet? Is it just me or do the Cards have more exes out there than other teams?
  21. Well, at least you feel at home. :) I always say "if you are gonna make fun of me, make it funny" well done
  22. looked pretty intentional. pitch shouldn't have been at the head though. Renteria shouldn't have smacked the SS, that is bogus.
  23. do you guys know that every time I go to Wrigley Field, I see sleeveless shirts and jean shorts on Cub fans?
  24. Well I suppose I'm talking to the wrong fans - most of my Cub fan friends believe Sandberg was great defensively. Or they are telling me that just to boast. . whatever. I remember Willie McGee, he is my fav player of all time in St. Louis. Unfortunately, I was too young to really evaluate him like I have been able to with Edmonds. I too wonder how the two would be remembered if they played in similar circumstances (not just TV and ESPN, but the style of play - defense and speed were the norm in St. Louis then, McGee may not have stood out like Edmonds does in a home run era) That said, Edmonds isn't the fastest or quickest in the OF - and I think his anticipation allows him to get to balls that he wouldn't get to, ala Sandberg. Since I've had DirectTV and St. Louis local channels (starting in 2002) I've probably watched 80-85% of Cards games. Followed them religiously before but couldn't watch as many. It's my personal belief that Edmonds takes way too much heat for diving. The fact is that he makes plays that most don't. Maybe he doesn't need to dive here and there, occasionally. But the catch in KC, the catches in Cincinnati, the one against Houston in 2004 - those plays aren't being made around the league with the regularity that Edmonds made them, except for Torii Hunter, maybe Andruw Jones. Others have said he dives for balls others get to easily. I'm not sure I agree with that 100% but if that's the case, it's quite often due to the fact that Edmonds is playing shallow, taking away short CF. It is my opinion that Edmonds is damned either way. Most people hate him because they think he showboats, and that affects the way they view him. I'd love to see anybody point me to a clip where Edmonds pauses and watches a homer. Even when Z hit him, Edmonds homered the next time and put his head down. Anyway - enough of this rant. Cub fans aren't alone - the Astros fan I work with thinks he showboats at the plate. . . if you wanna gripe about staring down dingers, the conversation and hate should begin and end with Albert.
