  1. Right now, I just care about the Cubs winning the division (or the WC). If it takes 90, fine. If it takes 85 or less, I'm plenty happy with that as well. How the Brewers do over the next month has a big impact on if the Cubs are in the race or out of the race at the deadline (of course, what the Cubs do has a bigger impact). Is there even a chance at that?I havent seen the WC standings but Im guessing we are pretty far back As of yesterday, we were closer to the WC (7.5 back) than we were to the division lead, I think.
  2. Milwaukee ties it 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth, one out. :x
  3. What the hell was Pagan doing? I like the insurance run, that was terrible baserunning.
  4. Tie game 2-2 in Milwaukee, runner on third, one out, top of the 8th.
  5. He did make a nice catch, but I would prefer it if he saw the ball from the beginning.
  6. At this rate, Contreras is going to throw a complete game shutout.
  7. Why would the Rangers agree to a Jacques for Gagne deal?
  8. This whole catcher's game calling thing is getting out of hand. The catcher matters, but is a fairly small overall part of a pitcher's performance when you consider the other factors: the pitcher, his opposition, the overall fielding of the team, and, of course, luck. Once again, CERA stats during the Barrett era (courtesy of Warren Brusstar): Barrett: 4.26 Backups: 4.32 If this doesn't convince you that it is a myth that Barrett's game calling killed the Cubs, I don't know what will. Maybe he was a worse game caller than the other catchers, but it clearly didn't make much of an impact. At the same time, I highly doubt that Koyie Hill magically makes Rich Hill Cy Young, for these same reasons.
  9. 85 pitches for Hill. Considering how effective he's been and the score, I'd probably let him get up to 120 pitches in this game.
  10. Well, that sure lends a lot of credibility to that argument.
  11. I said it first I said it before the gamethread was even started.
  12. Really? How many games can you lose if you have perfect pitching and defense? (A: None) Hitting is not, especially for a Catcher, a players primary function. So you subscribe the Hendry's "I like players that can catch" philosophy? To say that hitting is not a position player's primary function is absurd. Generally, the difference in runs scored between average and good hitters in greater than the difference in runs allowed between average and good fielders. Having a great fielding team with no hitting is a poor strategy. And to correspond to your question, how many games can you win if you have no offense? (A: None).
  13. Umm because he sucks? Maybe Lou is playing Theriot because hes younger and feels that maybe Theriot could get better, where as we/he knows what he has in Izturis. Is Theriot younger? I thought both were 27. Izturis does undeniably suck at this point. If they could ship him out for a minor league scrub, I'd probably do it just to get rid of his salary and open up roster space. Does he have another year on his contract, and is it a team option?
  14. And Barrett was/is a crappy baseball player, beyond the offense, he has no other redeeming quality. Poor base runner, can't catch the ball, called a poor game, cannot throw anyone out, if Bowen hits .220 but, provides more complete baseball. He'll increase the Cubs' chances of playing better baseball and perhaps, winning baseball. The argument that Barrett was a good hitter but a bad player ignores the fact that hitting is the most critical part of a player's responsibilities. If the team can't score runs, having a few less mental mistakes on the bases and behind the plate won't matter. Some people are greatly overrating intangible factors in their search for a scapegoat for this season, especially when it comes to the game calling myth. Barrett's CERA is 4.26 catching Cubs pitchers. Over the same time, his backups' CERAs are 4.32 combined. CERA is a completely and totally meaningless stat, and whether or not our pitchers felt more comfortable pitching to Barrett or the backup, they performed more or less the same. Bowen's grit isn't going to save the team if he can't hit. Last night showed clearly that removing the intangible clubhouse cancer did very little to alieviate the mental mistakes the team makes.
  15. I don't think they count as mediocre anymore. I think they are just bad at this point.
  16. It has been over since they went on that six game losing streak.
  17. No, his fastball has been in the low 90s. He has thrown some changeups though.
  18. The Padres should quickly realize that his defense is terrible and his bat is not enough to offset the PB's and mental lapses.
  19. We need to find a way to get Theriot out of the lineup regularly. As a bench player he is acceptable, but as the everyday shortstop, he is killing us.
