  1. If it does turn out to be Rocky Cherry, I'm not surprised. I would have liked to get rid of Eyre, but Cherry is no more effective than him, and we can't trade Eyre while he is on the DL.
  2. Just win series. If the Cubs win the majority of three game sets the rest of the way they'll be in good shape. They do have to play better at Wrigley Field, though. Hahaha. I'm guessing you forgot to go back and edit this post, right? Brewers play what? 5 more series all year against opponents over .500? The Cubs would need to go on a hellish winning streak, and the Brewers one hell of a losing streak, for us to catch them. Just winning 2/3 in a majority of series? That boat, as they say, sailed long ago. Do the Brewers look poised to start dropping 10/11 or 12/15 any time soon? Best hitting in the division, and it's not close? Pitching right up there with us in the Central -- nobody else in the same zip code? Easy schedule the rest of the way? I don't think so. Did they look poised for a long losing streak when they were 24-10? Who knows how the Brewers will play for the rest of the season? My bet would be on over .500, but it is possible that they will be mediocre or worse the rset of the way.
  3. A series win is a series win, whether you get crushed in one game out of three or crush your opponent twice. If we win to of three, I'll be satisfied with the series. i don't think winning two of three against the division leader will have any detrimental effect on the team.
  4. Looking at the pitcher vs batter matchups, Bush does own the Cubs, but it is telling that the batter with the most ABs against him is Jones (who will not be playing today, Lou willing). Izturis is one of the top few in ABs against Bush, and is awful. Not surprisingly, they have struggled. Most of the Cubs everyday players either crushed Bush (ARam, Soriano, DeRosa, Floyd) or had so few ABs against him that the sample size is tiny (5 or so ABs). The only exception is Lee, who has struggled to hit Bush in 13 ABs.
  5. I'd like to hear any arguments in favor. At the moment, I can't think of any. I'd hate to see baseball end up in the same mess as the NBA, with a postseason lasting months on end, so that by the time the championship series has started, I have all but completely lost interest.
  6. After yesterday's 7 nonpremium pages before the game started, this one will be lucky to get to 4 due to the difference of starters (young pitcher on a roll vs. vet on a cold streak) and outcome of the previous game.
  7. All I'm saying is that the bullpen had to pitch two less innings in a series where they're very likely to be taxed over the remaining two games, and I'm glad for that. What's so wrong with that sentiment? Why are you responding to me like I'm doing something wrong? I'm not happy with his start because of this and I thought overall it stunk. What's the big deal? I'm just glad over the one specific aspect that he spared the bullpen two innings in a disastrous start. It's not like I'm raving about it or thinking it was some remarkable thing he did. You're right. 3 IP 5 ER is in fact better than 1 IP 5 ER. If your point was that it could have been worse, of course it could have been worse. Others have pointed out that, despite that, it still sucked, which is similarly obvious. The arguments (1. that it could have been worse, and 2. that despite the fact that it could have been worse it still sucked) are not mutually exclusive. Both of these things have been acknowledged, now we can move on.
  8. I dunno. He's rarely been so completely shelled that he needed an early exit, but his ERA is probably deceptive considering his high walk rate and extremely low strikeout rate. Oh, and the entire rest of his career.
  9. It really didn't help that Marshall couldn't do anything with his curveball all day but hang it belt high over the plate either.
  10. Yes! I can sense the resentment building... Fontenot will be the next scapegoat to be traded for peanuts. Well, maybe not. Nobody around here has it in them to blame the young kid, especially since he is hitting way over his head. This game can't be blamed on Fontenot. If the pitching had been less awful, those errors might have made a difference, but in this game they are just a small blip on the suckiness the Cubs have shown today.
  11. he decided he was swinging on every one of those pitches, like only a cub does. Kevin Mench (outside of today).
  12. Probably because you don't watch the games of other teams as often or pay attention to their players as closely. Every team gets hot, every team gets cold. The good teams are hottest for the longest, and vice versa.
  13. Yeah. I can deal with one crappy game started, but this is two in a row. Crap. And quite possibly heading towards the third straight meltdown with Marquis pitching tomorrow.
  14. It is a good thing we got rid of Barrett. His game calling skills were really killing our staff.
  15. Or they just get the lucky break of facing Eyre. Teeing off on him really isn't that impressive. eyre started the game and gave up 7 over 2? OK, they faced two crappy pitchers today. As we saw yesterday, good pitching shuts them down, just like anyone else. marshall pitched exceptionally this year, wouldn't you agree? See above post.
  16. Or they just get the lucky break of facing Eyre. Teeing off on him really isn't that impressive. eyre started the game and gave up 7 over 2? As much as he has been good before today, Sean Marshall is not projected to be a front of the rotation starter in the MLB. He is a decent starter who pitched an awful game. That happens. If you were watching him pitch, then you saw that he was unable to get his curveball below the belt for the whole game, and it cost him.
  17. Or maybe they're just facing crappier pitching and getting bettre swings.
  18. Can we forfeit this game for the sake of the bullpen? I know that it is technically possible for the Cubs to come back, but at this point they might need a rest for their pen more than a slim chance at winning the game.
  19. Because Hendry can't admit his mistakes. Or because he can't find anyone to take him.
  20. Right, if you really believe that guys like Estrada, Hardy, Jenkins, Hart will continue to way outpeform their career numbers. I think they come back to the pack in the second half big time. Hell even Prince Fielder is having a career year. It makes sense that their young guys would have career years, they are still heading towards their peak seasons. We have to hope the cool off somewhat, though.
  21. Yeah, we've never had a guy hit a walk off home run into the middle of the bleachers with the wind blowing straight in... Eyre continues to suck. This game is just about done.
  22. To be fair, Pagan would have had to have made a great play to catch that ball. He was close, but not quite there.
  23. The only positive here is that no matter how much the Cubs lose by, they still only lose one game.
