  1. Sure there was, take him to arbitration. Give him a reasonable contract and extension. Those are two. Here's another, not treat him like a rented mule and then insinuate he's a [expletive] to anyone that will listen. I think what the Cubs were offering was reasonable.
  2. Not sure if this has been posted yet from Rotoworld. Kosuke Fukudome-OF-Player Dec. 11 - 9:59 am et The Cubs have offered Kosuke Fukudome close to $50 million, according to the San Diego Union Tribune. That deal would likely trump the Padres' initial offer, which is reportedly worth over $10 million per season for three years. The White Sox are also believed to be in the running for Fukudome, who announced Tuesday that he's leaving Japan for MLB. Source: San
  3. It worked out well last year. This year probably not so much. It did? An ERA near 5 and a WHIP of almost 1.4 is working out well? It worked out well for about 1 month(April) and then it was all downhill from there Yes, they may not be sexy numbers but they are still very decent numbers for a back of the rotation pitcher. Marquis is terrible. I'd rather give that rotation spot to one of the kids making peanuts. And to top it all off they probably will be better than an overpaid Marquis. Terrible contract. Marquis is not terrible by any stretch of the imagination. I'm sure that almost every team in the NL would have loved to have their 4th or 5th starter put up the numbers he put up last year. Just for fun take a look at other teams complete rotations, and compare them to the numbers Marquis put up last year. Is Marquis great? Not even close, but he is not terrible. Marquis is terrible, period. You can believe what you want but the fact remains Marquis sucks. Have you even seen how bad he was down the stretch? Look at his numbers the year before, the guys SUCKS. Try looking up his stats. He was above average for a back of the rotation starter last year. I really hate the term back of the rotation starter. What does this mean? He pitches every fifth game just like Zambrano, Lilly, and Hill. The fact is we're paying something like 16 million over the next two years on this guy. That's a lot of money for garbage. It's amazing to me that some people are ok with suckiness just because someone pitches the 4th or 5th game of the season. Marquis sucks period.
  4. Well according to the report of the deals offered this time, ours was the best. So, no. Exactly. I'm really not understanding all of this "he gave us a discount stuff". From all the reports I've seen we offered the best deal. I'm glad he resigned with us but I'm failing to see the big hometown discount.
  5. This paragraph is in Jason Starks new article on ESPN.com. It's a blurb about the Brad Lidge-Michael Bourn trade. There's little doubt in my mind what GM made this comment. Virtually everyone we've surveyed on that deal thinks the Phillies got the better of it. But one NL executive disagrees. "I think Houston has got something there in Michael Bourn. I think that guy has great ability. I know I'm out there on an island about that, but that's OK. I'll be out there. I think Michael Bourn will be a real good player."
  6. It would be a brilliant move on the Cubs part to get a guy like Carlos Gonzalez, however, it will never happen. The Cubs aren't willing to give their own prospects a chance. How on Earth is someone else's prospect going to get that chance? Because our prospects aren't very good. This guy is good.
  7. If Theriot puts up that line next season I'd have no problem with him being the starting SS.
  8. Signing Carlos Silva might be the worst idea I've heard this offseason. He's just not good. He can't strike anybody out and gives up a crapload of hits. He may be slightly better that Marquis but not by much. Plus he'll probably get a 4 year contract between 8 and 10 million. Please no.
  9. Um, no he's not. He's a little guy that plays shortstop. Leadoff hitters can only come from the SS and CF positions. Occasionally a second basemen can bat leadoff, but usually they bat 2nd. So I'll take Theriot batting leadoff over Pie anyday. This is sarcasm, right? I'm not so sure... You guys have obviously never played baseball before. Your fastest guy always leads off. It's common sense.
  10. Um, no he's not. He's a little guy that plays shortstop. Leadoff hitters can only come from the SS and CF positions. Occasionally a second basemen can bat leadoff, but usually they bat 2nd. So I'll take Theriot batting leadoff over Pie anyday.
  11. theriot is good enough at ss if we improve a lot at rf and cf. In theory, Murton in RF instead of Cliff and Pie 2008 instead of Pie/Pagan/Jones 2007 SHOULD be a big improvement, but I have little confidence that a) the Cubs will be smart enough to do it and b) that Murton and Pie will be what they should be just because we're the Cubs. If Pie, Murton, and Theroit are all starting next year we're in serious trouble.
  12. This is not rocket science guys. Kendall knows Livan Hernandez. It's kind of like when Enrique Wilson got a start becuase he knew Yankee Stadium. Brilliant managing.
  13. Exactly. That's the type of reaction you see in the Little League World Series from 10 year old, not a grown up MLB player. If a White Sox or Cards player threw his glove down like Lilly, this thread would be over 30 pages long and ripping the dude to shreds. I'm just not hooking into this one. I couldn't disagree with you more. I don't see the big deal. I doubt a Cards/Sox player doing this would garner more than a couple snide remarks in the game thread. The over-reaction of Lilly to giving up basically a season-ending 3 run jack is far suprassed by the over-reaction on this board today, IMO. So you're saying that what Lilly did was perfectly okay? Yes. I have yet to see a five page thread after a batter strikes out and throws his bat to the ground. Aramis does it quite often. Is he childish also?
  14. Thanks again Mr. Baker.
  15. They are all just part of the hilarious picture that is Ron Santo. Equally as funny most of the time is Pat's ability to block out Ronnies convulsions. Ron reminds me of Will Ferrell as Ron Burgandy. I could see Ferrell playing Ronnie. No way. Burgundy was dense, but he was mostly poised and coherent. He was prepared for his job. Santo is much more like Brick Tamland, a blithering idiot who makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, but he still manages to come across as somewhat lovable. Plus, I could definitely see him yelling "Loud Noises!!!!!!!" and killing a guy with a trident. Or, he's a combination of Brick and Champ: I'm Brick Tamland. People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks. Years later, a doctor will tell me that I have an I.Q. of 48 and am what some people call mentally [expletive]. Champ here. I'm all about havin' fun. You know, start a fire in someone's kitchen, maybe go to SeaWorld, take my pants off... Anyway, I've become kind of famous for my signature catch-phrase ? whammy. Like, Gene Tenace at the plate... and whammy. I can't understan how some people didn't like this movie. Easily Will Ferrell's funniest movie.
  16. Wasn't Berkman the one a couple of years ago that faked getting hit in the head against the cubs? He layed there for a couple of minutes in pain even thoug replays clearly showed the ball hit his bat and not head?
  17. Probably because Pena was horrible in a part-time role in BOS. As opposed to Monroe being good for Detroit?
  18. Is it too early to put Thomas and Donaldson on the list of players that helped themselves the most this season? I'm really excited about these two guys.
  19. I think it's been like 3 months. I saw him get a hit up the middle just the other day. It was your imagination.
  20. Is this coming as a surprise to anyone? That freaking team could sign Neifi Perez and Jose Macias and drag 100 OPS+ seasons out of both of them, complete with gold gloves. No they couldn't, and Ankiel isn't that big of surprise because we've known all along he could hit. What Ankiel is doing is acutally a big surprise.
