  1. I never hated LaTroy. He was a perfectly fine setup guy who openly expressed that he didn't want to close games, and Dusty pushed him into that position regardless. When he'd screw up, I'd be mad at Dusty rather than him.
  2. I am struggling to process what I just read. I cannot fathom how a parent could be so cruel to their own child. Simply unbelievable. I felt awful for letting my daughter cry for 30 seconds because I couldn't hold her and look under the couch for the pacifier she wanted at the same time. I cannot fathom actively inflicting that kind of pain on your own child. Simply monstrous.
  3. Rumor has it that it may not have been an accident. Apparently bandits in Venezuela like to place boulders in the road to make people stop or cause accidents so that they can rob them. This is heartbreaking stuff. He was always a favorite of mine.
  4. I keep coming back to the Milton Bradley situation. Even when it was clear they didn't want him back, I was livid at Hendry for putting the final nail in the coffin for his trade value by suspending him at the end of the season. I couldn't understand how he could overlook the obvious baseball implications. I was very wrong about that. The more info we got about how bad it was, the worse and worse I've felt about defending Bradley. I'm not making the same mistake again. Russell needs to go.
  5. Tommy's overall numbers as a Cub. 597 PA, 62 R, 9 HR, 63 RBI, 2 SB, .273/.356/.397 He was basically a league-average hitter despite the pinch-hitting penalty. So he might do just a bit better in Anaheim while playing slightly below-average defense. He could string together a few nice seasons and put up 2-3 fWAR pretty easily. Or he could be out of baseball in two years. Given his history with the Cubs, I'm hoping its the former.
  6. I don't think Russell plays another inning for the Chicago Cubs, but I do wonder if they could get away with optioning him to Iowa for the start of the season and hoping he plays well enough to build trade value for a desperate contender. I don't think they will, but I'm just curious about the technical aspects of it. I'm pretty sure he has options left. I'm pretty sure he doesn't have enough service time to negate those options. I'm less certain whether that would be grounds for a grievance with the union.
  7. i love these lists every year Next year's is likely to be a doozy. He's within 5 fWAR of: Jim Thome Ivan Rodriguez Larry Walker Carlos Beltran Paul Molitor Ozzie Smith Willie McCovey Barry Larkin Robin Yount Manny Ramirez Tim Raines Mark McGwire Harmon Killebrew Edgar Martinez Tony Gwynn And he's within 10 fWAR of: Derek Jeter Reggie Jackson Rod Carew Frank Thomas Eddie Murray Ron Santo Miguel Cabrera Rafael Palmeiro Scott Rolen His 64.7 fWAR currently ranks him 5th among active players, behind only: Albert Pujols - 88.2 Adrian Beltre - 84.0 Miguel Cabrera - 70.7 CC Sabathia - 67.8 None of those guys look to be contributors for much longer. So he's likely to take over as the active leader within the next few years unless he falls off pace and Justin Verlander (63.6) or Clayton Kershaw (61.6) can pitch like an ace for a few more years.
  8. A partial list of players Mike Trout passed this season the career fWAR leaderboard: Jim Edmonds Alan Trammell Yogi Berra Mike Piazza Roberto Alomar Duke Snider Ernie Banks Chase Utley Willie Stargell Kenny Lofton Joe Torre Gary Sheffield Dick Allen Pee Wee Reese Darrell Evans Hank Greenberg Ryne Sandberg Joe Jackson Billy Williams Sammy Sosa Dave Winfield Bobby Abreu Andre Dawson Keith Hernandez Tony Perez Ichiro Suzuki Jackie Robinson Fred McGriff Robin Ventura Jeff Kent Lance Berkman Todd Helton His career 64.7 fWAR ranks him 89th of all time on total career value. He's officially entering the part of the list where there are more HOF players than not. He's still just 27 years old.
  9. Yelich with a 2 run shot and Braun with a solo shot to tie it up.
  10. And the Phillies have now been eliminated.
  11. Hopefully they care this little the next four days also. fitting that with their performance and the Cardinals up big the Pirates will be eliminated officially today Could be a big day for that. Diamondbacks would be eliminated with a Cardinals win. Phillies are down in the 9th and would be out with a loss.
  12. Thankfully, with Russell sucking pretty hard this year due in part to recent injuries he's going to have a hard time with any sort of grievance when the Cubs send him home for the playoffs. Our huge glut of position players helps with that -- it's not hard to imagine a scenario where even a guy like Terrance Gore has more potential playoff utility than an injured guy who is little more than a defensive replacement at SS. I doubt Russell makes his way back to the team this year, but I don't see that mattering much.
  13. Yelich has a wet noodle for an arm... I have no idea what that guy was thinking. Truth be told, I'd probably bet on Yelich to be the better overall player next year. He's just an incredibly well-rounded player (aside from his terrible arm strength). But Javy has been roughly as valuable this year (especially if you buy a lot of the arguments about forced errors and his tagging ability that aren't adequately reflected by WAR figures). I don't see either as a bad MVP choice.
  14. Ah, got it. Makes sense. I knew there was a way a team didn’t necessarily have to take or get a guy. I remember in the late 90's that the Padres got stuck with Randy Myers after putting in a waiver claim. Their goal was to block him from getting to the Braves and had no intention of trading for him. The didn't expect the other team to say you can have him and then have to pay his salary. The one I always think of is Jose Canseco going to the Yankees when they tried to block him from going to the Red Sox. I also think about Alex Rios going to the White Sox.
  15. Neat article. I thought the most interesting part was where Hoyer mentioned they typically put in between 1 to 8 or 9 waiver claims every day.
  16. Just general immaturity. Bar brawls, reckless driving, fighting with fans and teammates, etc... Admittedly, it was one of the harder spots to find somebody I really hated. Unlike RP, which... wow.
  17. there are at least 4 more Cardinals players I'd like on this roster I thought about that too, but I decided they have to be able to play. And so many of their guys end up dead.

  19. I got bored. Presenting my "I Could Never Root for These Guys" All-Star Team: (more emphasis on "I could never root for these guys" than on "All-Star") C - Steve Clevenger 1B - Adam LaRoche 2B - Daniel Murphy 3B - Jung Ho Kang SS - Jose Reyes LF - Ryan Braun CF - Colby Rasmus RF - Yasiel Puig SP - Trevor Bauer CL - Aroldis Chapman or Roberto Osuna or Jeurys Familia or Matt Bush
  20. For a front office that supposedly values intangibles so much, they sure do acquire their fair share of shitheads like Chapman and Murphy. I wonder if Milton Bradley has anything left in the tank?
  21. you and derwood have mentioned his "antics" and how that rubs old time guys the wrong way, but i haven't heard anything but praise from even most old timey guys probably because, despite being flashy, he is really horsefeathering good at little things nobody else usually even notice. harold reynolds could barely contain himself when describing the bunt singles and the steals of home and the thought that went into them. i've definitely heard stuff about the "antics" from fans of other teams (and a couple anonymous quotes from players he has probably pissed off), but i haven't seen many in the media who *don't* seem to praise/love on him (short of maybe some dildo local broadcasters like thom). he has something for everyone. I would love to be proven wrong. But I think that somebody as flashy as Baez is probably not popular with opposing teams' beat writers.
  22. Nope. He's going to get dinged on both sides of the debate. Old-timers aren't going to vote for him because of his antics. Analytics guys are going to have a hard time getting past his walk rate, even if his WAR figures are high. It'll go to Freeman or Arenado.
  23. Hamels/Chavez/Kintzler isn't a terrible deadline haul. I know a lot of us would have liked to see more, but it's not like we stood pat.
  24. I don't like the 3pm trade deadline. Make it 7pm or something so I can obsessively watch twitter after I get home from work. I'm barely keeping up as is.
  25. I'm getting a real sense of deja vu about this Cole Hamels thing. It's like we did the same thing with Dan Haren. Except Dan Haren is funny.
