  1. And the Phillies have now been eliminated.
  2. Hopefully they care this little the next four days also. fitting that with their performance and the Cardinals up big the Pirates will be eliminated officially today Could be a big day for that. Diamondbacks would be eliminated with a Cardinals win. Phillies are down in the 9th and would be out with a loss.
  3. Thankfully, with Russell sucking pretty hard this year due in part to recent injuries he's going to have a hard time with any sort of grievance when the Cubs send him home for the playoffs. Our huge glut of position players helps with that -- it's not hard to imagine a scenario where even a guy like Terrance Gore has more potential playoff utility than an injured guy who is little more than a defensive replacement at SS. I doubt Russell makes his way back to the team this year, but I don't see that mattering much.
  4. Yelich has a wet noodle for an arm... I have no idea what that guy was thinking. Truth be told, I'd probably bet on Yelich to be the better overall player next year. He's just an incredibly well-rounded player (aside from his terrible arm strength). But Javy has been roughly as valuable this year (especially if you buy a lot of the arguments about forced errors and his tagging ability that aren't adequately reflected by WAR figures). I don't see either as a bad MVP choice.
  5. Ah, got it. Makes sense. I knew there was a way a team didn’t necessarily have to take or get a guy. I remember in the late 90's that the Padres got stuck with Randy Myers after putting in a waiver claim. Their goal was to block him from getting to the Braves and had no intention of trading for him. The didn't expect the other team to say you can have him and then have to pay his salary. The one I always think of is Jose Canseco going to the Yankees when they tried to block him from going to the Red Sox. I also think about Alex Rios going to the White Sox.
  6. Neat article. I thought the most interesting part was where Hoyer mentioned they typically put in between 1 to 8 or 9 waiver claims every day.
  7. Just general immaturity. Bar brawls, reckless driving, fighting with fans and teammates, etc... Admittedly, it was one of the harder spots to find somebody I really hated. Unlike RP, which... wow.
  8. there are at least 4 more Cardinals players I'd like on this roster I thought about that too, but I decided they have to be able to play. And so many of their guys end up dead.
  9. https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2016/09/23/steve-clevenger-suspended-racist-charlotte-tweets-seattle-mariners/90908618/
  10. I got bored. Presenting my "I Could Never Root for These Guys" All-Star Team: (more emphasis on "I could never root for these guys" than on "All-Star") C - Steve Clevenger 1B - Adam LaRoche 2B - Daniel Murphy 3B - Jung Ho Kang SS - Jose Reyes LF - Ryan Braun CF - Colby Rasmus RF - Yasiel Puig SP - Trevor Bauer CL - Aroldis Chapman or Roberto Osuna or Jeurys Familia or Matt Bush
  11. For a front office that supposedly values intangibles so much, they sure do acquire their fair share of shitheads like Chapman and Murphy. I wonder if Milton Bradley has anything left in the tank?
  12. you and derwood have mentioned his "antics" and how that rubs old time guys the wrong way, but i haven't heard anything but praise from even most old timey guys probably because, despite being flashy, he is really horsefeathering good at little things nobody else usually even notice. harold reynolds could barely contain himself when describing the bunt singles and the steals of home and the thought that went into them. i've definitely heard stuff about the "antics" from fans of other teams (and a couple anonymous quotes from players he has probably pissed off), but i haven't seen many in the media who *don't* seem to praise/love on him (short of maybe some dildo local broadcasters like thom). he has something for everyone. I would love to be proven wrong. But I think that somebody as flashy as Baez is probably not popular with opposing teams' beat writers.
  13. Nope. He's going to get dinged on both sides of the debate. Old-timers aren't going to vote for him because of his antics. Analytics guys are going to have a hard time getting past his walk rate, even if his WAR figures are high. It'll go to Freeman or Arenado.
  14. Hamels/Chavez/Kintzler isn't a terrible deadline haul. I know a lot of us would have liked to see more, but it's not like we stood pat.
  15. I don't like the 3pm trade deadline. Make it 7pm or something so I can obsessively watch twitter after I get home from work. I'm barely keeping up as is.
  16. I'm getting a real sense of deja vu about this Cole Hamels thing. It's like we did the same thing with Dan Haren. Except Dan Haren is funny.
  17. We could trade him for Chris Volstad again. Inexplicably, that guy is still collecting MLB paychecks. He's the proud owner of a 5.83 ERA with the White Sox.
  18. I'm a fan of the move. We didn't give up much of anything and we got a solid pen option or serviceable #5 starter, depending on our needs.
  19. I tried to use "Bake him away, toys" but shockingly enough I couldn't find a good gif.
  20. Cubs are gonna have to tinker with the swing if they want more power, IMO. He has 2 career HRs already, but the first one went about 320 feet and would have been caught on the track in a big league park, and everything else has been of the groundball or linedrive variety. That plays well with his plus speed, but it's not going to result in 20 bombs. The walks are really nice to see in the early going, though. He only walked 19 times this year at Stanford in 254 PAs, 15 in 275 in 2017, and 13 in 236 in 2016. He already has 9 in 60 professional PAs. It's been about as good as a pro debut as you could have asked for from Hoerner so far. Bold opinion: I have a lot of faith in the Cubs front office when it comes to drafting college hitters in the first round.
  21. It's nice that our players are less likely to get into a stupid beanball war, but I always did enjoy having an important position on the Cardinals staffed by an utter meathead. Mattheny was totally inept, and making it hard to attract and retain talent unless they paid through the nose, a la Fowler. That said, I'm not too worried that they'll replace him with somebody a whole lot better. The core of that team has run out its competitive window and if the front office keeps pushing for a wild card berth every year there's not much reason for a good manager to board to a sinking ship. They'll hire somebody pretty crappy to run out the string on the next couple seasons while they work up the courage to rebuild. I wonder what Mike Quade is doing?
  22. So there is roughly 2.5 pitchers per team who have pitched enough to qualify on each team. That kind of says a lot on its own. The Cubs got him to give them a lot of quality innings at an affordable price, not be a shutdown ace. Yup. We wanted him to be a modern day equivalent to David Wells or Chuck Finley.
  23. Dietrich has a full-time gig all to himself, and still has a lower fWAR than Schwarber, Heyward, Almora, Happ, and Zobrist. I cannot imagine a world in which we are shopping for Derek Dietrich unless there's some crazy back2banks 3-way blockbuster on the horizon. He's not even a fit as our 5th OF as things stand right now.
