  1. A recent Score update said that Theo is rumored to have arrived in town.
  2. If they bring in Ryno, I hope it's for a short-term deal. My main fear with him is that once he's entrenched as manager, he'd be impossible to get rid of regardless of his managerial acumen and style. Maybe that will change with a new sheriff in town.
  3. thekapman David Kaplan I just spoke with two excellent sources on Epstein negotiations and it appears deal is basically done with announcement of agreement tmrw.
  4. Kap too thekapman David Kaplan It appears that Cubs and Red Sox are close to finalizing deal that will allow Theo Epstein to head to the Cubs. Could be finalized tomorrow. 1 minute ago
  5. Someone (?) tweeted him the same question: jimcallisBA Jim Callis Closer to middle of pack than bottom three. @jdfisch: @pgammo said #cubs have a bottom three farm system. That cant be possibly true is it?

  8. Carrie Muskat puts a few quotes around Gammons' WEEI interview and posts it on her blog: http://muskat.mlblogs.com/2011/10/19/1019-gammons-on-cubs-red-sox-talks/
  9. Here's the audio link: http://audio.weei.com/a/47175769/peter-gammons-mlb-insider.htm ETA: Cubs talk starts around 8:50 in
  10. Are you sure that's what he said? Any chance you are exaggerating a bit, because that is idiotic and not something I would assume Gammons would say. WEEI is pretty good at getting the audio turned around quickly -- he definitely said bottom 3, used the Billy Williams comp, used the term 'absurd,' used the term 'tedious,' said the slotting at 25 in the Boston system. The last sentence was a summary wherein he said the Business Ops person (presumably Kenny) and the interim GM (Bush), neither of which have any background in development or the minor leagues system, were running the negotiations and did not know the background of the minor leaguers in the negotiations. I did paraphrase that part, but it's pretty much the bottom line of what he was saying. I tuned in a LITTLE late -- just happened to see a WEEI tweet that he was on -- this was probably toward the end of his appearance.* *or interview ... I guess you don't actually appear on the radio.
  11. Buster_ESPN Buster Olney The perception that BOS's leverage in Theo matter increased by holding up Cubs' business is funny. As if Theo not already making CHC plans. 6 minutes ago Favorite Retweet Reply
  12. Peter Gammons is on WEEI right now. He said that everyone knows that the Cubs have a bottom 3 farm system and the fear of giving up the next Billy Williams is 'absurd.' A top 5 Cubs prospect would slot in at about 25 in the Boston system. He also said that the tedious process is because the people negotiating for the Cubs have no idea who any of their prospects are or what they're worth. That's the kind of hard-hitting analysis Boston is hearing.
  13. It may not affect the Padres' approach to compensation, but I've read that Moorad, lead owner of the Padres, would probably be happy to promote Byrnes to the GMship because they have a good relationship from working together in AZ. But it may have been Heyman speculating, so take it for what it's worth.
  14. Of course if they could ever agree on a short list of players for Boston to choose from. I wouldn't be surprised if this ended up being part of the solution, if it's permissible. For all the talk of leverage and bad PR forcing the Cubs hand, Boston really needs to point to some sort of compensation as a win to its fan base. Hopefully, the (supposed) news blackout during the WS will give both sides some breathing room to strike a deal.
  15. Here's the link to the Heyman article: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/baseball/mlb/10/18/heyman.hoyer/index.html?sct=hp_t2_a4&eref=sihp
  16. That or the Cubs had somebody leak this to him to attempt to scare the Red Sox into caving and not losing $6.5M on their lame duck GM. Would the Padres even grant permission for us to hire their GM to GM? The Cubs could have the Eastern Front & the Western Front in compensation negotiations.
  17. So the Cubs are considering hiring Hoyer, who may stay in SD, but if he goes, Byrnes will be the SD GM, unless the Cubs hire Byrnes, who is also being considered, in which case presumably Hoyer will remain SD GM.
  18. I think he's confused.
  19. Heyman weighs in again SI_JonHeyman Jon Heyman Padres gm jed hoyer is being considered for hire by the cubs/epstein. If hoyer goes to chicago, josh byrnes would be sd gm
  20. Phil Rogers contemplates what would happen if the deal falls through (+ new MLB CBA + Pujols' salary projections)
  21. FWIW, Bruce Levine is doing another ESPN Chicago Cubs chat right now. Here are a few sample Q&As:
  22. I'm impressed by how Boston, standing in the still-smoking ruins of a season with napalm continuing to reign down on the team, former manager, and ownership, thinks that bad P.R. will force Ricketts' hand.
  23. I'd like this to be over, but yay ricketts!
