haha - now this is going out on AP Here is the latest New England sports news from The Associated Press NECN Oct 21, 2011 2:01pm BOSTON (AP) — The Red Sox and Cubs reportedly are finalizing their deal that will send Theo Epstein to Chicago to become the Cubs' president of baseball operations. A baseball source tells ESPN MLB officials have given the Cubs the OK to announce the deal today, with Jed Hoyer of the Padres also soon expected to go to the Cubs as GM.

I can't think off the top of my head what I read to make me believe it, but it sounded to me like he was had the idea to chase Epstein since Hendry was canned. I realize the name was bandied about at the time, but Epstein was a huge longshot. I thought he didn't move to the front of the list until Boston collapsed. I recall that there was speculation that the collapse actually lessened the chances of Theo joining Chicago because he and ownership would be less likely to walk / allow him to walk early after such a historic choke. There was a headline along the lines of "Boston loses Wild Card, but real losers are Cubs" with that sort of reasoning.

There seems to be a resurgence of the fantasy that Theo can serve out the remainder of his contract as Red Sox GM and join the Cubs next year.

Rozner is a HUGE Maddux fanboy and wrote a column about Maddux a couple of weeks ago. Maddux has a daughter with severe migraine problems and said that he's just not focused on baseball right now. Theo really is getting the band back together. I'm neutral on Kenney, but if that's the way it played out, he prob does need the boot.

The Red Sox figure they can out wait the Cubs on this one. Which is an increasingly insane viewpoint. The only thing that the Red Sox could hope to pin the Cubs on was that they HAD to have Epstein as the GM, and they'd need him to start making decisions soon. With the news that Epstein would be president and Hoyer is the GM target, there is little urgency in adding a President of Baseball Ops immediately. Or at the very least they can wait a lot longer than the Sox would want to before their sending Theo 6.5 million dollars and the entire organization isn't sure if Theo is actually running things during actual offseason decisions. Levine was dead on, what children. Someone compared this to a divorce earlier, and it certainly seems like the negotiating style is spiteful. Hope it doesn't come to a 2012 scenario. What I've read is that Hoyer wouldn't make the jump until Theo is on board, but I assume the timing could be moved up if necessary.

Bruce & Kap's source apparently misread the situation. Rather worrisome. Bruce ripped the Red Sox for not behaving like adults & being too caught up with damage control to negotiate in good faith.
