  3. http://bc.images.trb.com/media/graphic/2005-04/16841579.jpg Len Kasper, Broadcaster for the Chicago, has graciously agreed for a second time to answer questions from posters on NSBB! If you would like to send a comment to Len, or if you would like to ask Len a question, feel free to post it here. The deadline for submitting questions is Wednesday, January 18th at noon. Once Len has had an opportunity to answer them, the responses will be posted. This session will be coordinated as in accordance with The NSBB Q & A Guidelines. We're putting up the Q&A thread a little earlier than usual because people have different schedules and because the Cubs Convention is happening next weekend (Jan 13-15). This should give everyone a chance to post a question. Thank you to Len for again taking the time to interact with us on such an up close and personal level. In addition, thank you to Len for his references to NSBB both during broadcasts and the WGN Sports Baseball Blog. A special thank you to Len for his help in raising funds for the American Red Cross with his donated 2005 Spring Training Scorecards. As always, thank you to all of you for making NSBB such a wonderful community!
  4. It'll be interesting. If Neifi starts at 2B, my money says he'll usually bat second. He's a switch-hitter, he's a middle infielder, he's a veteran bat. Pierre CF Neifi 2B DLee 1B Aramis/JJones 3B/RF Jones/JJones RF/3B Murton LF Barrett C Cedeno SS Pitcher Dusty wouldn't want to bat Murton - Cedeno back-to-back. Of course, that might be more incentive to start a L bat in LF.
  5. I wonder how many games he's played at 2nd this winter. Last I checked (which has been awhile), he hadn't played any.
  6. We do talk with Bruce on a regular basis about his participation here as a guest and as a fellow poster. He is going to do a scheduled chat / Q&A session here before spring training; there will be plenty of notice as to when that will be and there will be a thread set up for people to post their questions. So - yes - there will be a formal mechanism for questions for him (and a few others) once we nail down the schedule. He's also going to continue to participate here as a poster -- unscheduled, informal, etc. If calling-out threads become more of a problem, we'll ask for everyone's cooperation in ceasing and desisting ... and we may end up moving and locking some of them. So - also - we are going to allow him to continue to participate informally. Everyone has very well-intentioned and good suggestions, and maybe things will change down the line. For now, that's how it will work. It's great having him here sharing his perspective, and we'd like to ensure that he continues to enjoy being here as well. :)
  7. It can work both ways -- maybe it would be easier if they weren't in the same organization.
  8. I think of BA as the default. I like reading Sickels because it isn't the same perspective as BA. I also like how he does the retrospectives and looks back at how he rated players when they were prospects and what went right and what went wrong. He released the 50/50 list (50 top position player & pitching prospects). The entire list is copyrighted and intended for those who pre-ordered the book. Pie comes in at #25 on the position player list. Pawelek is #36 & Veal is #48 on the pitching list.
  9. That seems to vary by pitcher and situation. Several Cubs management types said last spring that Barrett would be paired with Maddux this past season for the express purpose of improving Barrett's game-calling abilities. That indicates an organizational expectation that Barrett should be calling pitches, at least in some situations. I'm fine with Barrett; if the position could be clearly upgraded, great, but I'm more worried about the outfield than I am about the catchers.
  10. It's been ridiculous like that for the past couple of years. They send out ticket order forms in mid-December. I haven't ordered by mail, but people who have say that it's better than dealing with phone/net orders if you have your schedule set.
  11. Can't you set up your profile so it gives you an option of not showing up on the "who's online list". I post on other messgae boards of the same layout that allow this. Edit: Yes he can - Bruce you can click the yes bubble to hide your online status, if you're getting sick of being called out everytime you come on. He's aware of the underground online status option. Like other posters here, he likes interacting with Cubs fans (for better and for worse). That said, we could cool it on the call-out threads every single time he's spotted online. We're going to invite him to participate in an "official" online chat soon, so everyone can ask questions of him then. In between chat times, he'll add his perspective when he wants to ... just like everyone else.
  12. It appears that everything in Baltimore is in limbo.
  13. For what it's worth, Steve Stone talked about the rumors the other day (yesterday?) on the Score. He didn't distinguish between what he was speculating and what he had heard as rumor. Here's his scenario: Tejada says he wants a trade. Hendry calls up Baltimore and opens with Patterson, Hill and 3 "very good prospects" (no names mentioned). Duquette & Flanagan (sp?) laugh and say that if the Cubs want Tejada, the deal has to include Prior or Zambrano. "Well, the Cubs are not going to trade Carlos Zambrano," Stone said. He continued to say that if the Cubs are going to trade Mark Prior, they are going to need to get another potentially very good starting pitcher, like a Bedard. The O's, however, do not want to part with Bedard unless they get their choice of pitchers (Zambrano, since he's now viewed as indestructable and would rather be killed than miss a start) or another very good starting pitcher somehow gets involved in the deal (hence the Zito rumors) and goes to the O's. That's where the deal stalled.
  14. Just in case you decide to edit. :D Nice.
  15. I know you're aware that there's a difference between trading a player and losing a player in the Rule 5 draft. Were you happy with how the Sisco situation played out? Aren't you being overdramatic about the handwringing over Sing? JeffH laid out a good explanation for why he wouldn't be taken, and he was right. I wouldn't have liked losing Sing because I do have some hopes that he could at least be trade bait in the future or a serviceable MLB backup player. But to ease your concerns -- I didn't lose sleep over it. Nor did I wring my hands. You seem to have been more agitated over my concern than I was. Most of the concerns I saw expressed over a Tejada trade involved losing Prior, not prospects. Edited to fix quotes.
  16. Thanks. I was thinking that the price had REALLY gone up since last year, but I forgot about the amazon connection.
  17. If you haven't already reviewed the NSBB member guidelines, you should do so now.
  18. FYI - John Sickels' 2006 Baseball Prospect book is available for pre-ordering at this site. It's scheduled to ship February 6 and is $24.95 inc. shipping. The 2006 Baseball America Prospect Handbook will be available in mid-February and can be pre-ordered through the store link at the BA web site. It's $35.95 inc. shipping.
  19. No. There was a Rotoworld mention of it based on the Denver Post blurb.
  20. I would guess without looking that the $$$ balance would be easier to work out as well. Would McCarthy be included?
  21. The Z-Bonds game was July 31, 2003. I always thought this famous Z photo was from that day, but I'm not certain. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/laserena06/bizrocks.jpg I think it was an ESPN game. They kept playing the clip of Z going nuts and a broadcaster saying "Zambrano seems to be ... doing ... some ... sort ... of dance ... out on the mound, and Bonds is just staring at him."
  22. They were all breaking pitches! He homered off Clement twice in the second game. I remember some hilarious Prior quotes after the game, but ... I couldn't find them on google. They're probably here somewhere, which is why we need search back.
  23. It was edited because copyrighted material can't be posted here in its entirety. Just an FYI. Thanks for providing the link.
