  1. This from cbssports: Another high interest Japanese free agent, outfielder Kosuke Fukodome, is expected to narrow his choices early next week after his agent presents him with a final report regarding his options on Friday. San Diego is believed to have offered three years and $36 million, and the Cubs may be up to as much as four years and $40 million. The Padres are hoping Fukodome prefers a western locale, because the Cubs almost certainly will out-bid them.
  2. It was mentioned that he would be competing for the closer spot. I'm pretty certain that at this point it would be as a reliever.
  3. As I understood it, the Cubs were not among the teams offering 2 years although I might have misunderstood.
  4. Initially it sounded like 5-6 million per year on the other offers but they clarified it to $5 million total.
  5. They said he had 2 yr offers from Boston, Texas and Milwaukee for about 5 million total but decided to return to the Cubs.
  6. ESPN 1000 in Chicago just reported that Kerry Wood will stay with the Cubs - 1 yr/4 million.
  7. I don't know for sure but since WCIU is basically only for Chicago Area Cable, the ESPN telecast should still be available.
  8. It's as if it didn't exist. It'll be replayed from the beginning (if it's replayed at all) and nothing that happened during the game will be included in any stats.
  9. ESPN 1000 in Chicago just reported that Hendry is trying to get a deal done for Church.
  10. Who knows what will happen but a glance at the schedules for the Cubs, Brewers, and Cards would seem to indicate that both the Cubs and Brewers have an easier second half schedule than the Cards. I've probably missed a game or two somewhere but it appears as if the Cubs have 58 games against teams with a sub .500 record and 20 against teams with a plus .500 while the Brewers are something like 52 -.500 and 24 +500, with the Cards at 38 -.500 and 41 +.500.
  11. My daughter's boyfriend's family are Cardinal season ticket holders. They're giving us use of their tickets fo Fri night and Saturday's game. They're excellent seats about 50 ft past the Cardinal dugout 5 rows up.
  12. Going to see Fri/Sat games next weekend. Hopefully Lou will continue to keep Z on his every 5 day schedule so I won't have to watch Miller get hammered again. Was hoping to see Hill and Z pitch but it looks like it'll be Marquis and Z. Here's hoping Marquis continues to pitch as he has and Z starts to pitch like Z!
  13. He had something like 43 or 44 pitches thru the 3rd, about 60% for strikes.
  14. Paul Sullivan was just on Chicago Tribune Live. He said the deal was a low base - high incentive contract. He didn't specify any numbers.
  15. ESPN 1000 in Chicago just reported that the Cubs offer to Ramirez is 5/70 and that it is not a take it or leave it offer.
  16. I should have mentioned in my original post that it was "expected" that Rothschild would be returning - not definite yet. I hope that at least this part of it falls through.
  17. According to the report, it will be a 3 yr contract. Larry Rothschild will be retained as the pitching coach, John McLaren (?) will be the bench coach, and Mike Quade will also be a member of the coaching staff.
  18. Lou Piniella has been hired as the new Cubs manager per ESPN radio in Chicago. Cubs will supposedly have a news conference tomorrow to make it official. Unfortunately, per the same station, Larry Rothschild will be back as the pitching coach.
  19. I don't think the booing for Jones was solely the result of his batting average or OPS. His lack of defense and base running miscues were a significant factor in that. Some of his base running screw ups were the types of mistakes that you wouldn't expect a Little Leaguer to make (at least not more than once).
  20. Playing 14 over 500 the rest of the way won't get it done. The Cardinals are already 15 over. If the Cubs play 14 over 500 the rest of the way that would only get them to 2 over 500. Should the Cardinals play 500 ball, the Cubs would have to win about 70 of their last 112 games or 62.5% - not likely to happen.
  21. Hey Nathan, Thanks for taking the time to give us some information on the Chiefs. I'd like to know your impressions of Eric Patterson and Ryan Harvey. What specific areas do they need to improve on to minimize the time they will need to spend in the minors?
  22. From June on last year Corey hit considerably below .200. However, from the beginning of 2003 through May of last year, his avg was .278 with 47 HR's. Given the production of a lot the names mentioned as possible RF candidates next year, I really hope the Cubs keep him and give him another shot, even if it is as a 4th outfielder filling in occasionally for the other OFs or as a defensive replacement for Murton or possibly whomever we get to play RF.
  23. Of those two deals, which would you consider to be the longshot? Lugo and Huff?
  24. Maybe I missed it but the article mentions that Hendry has two trade proposals for a right fielder pending - one of which has been pending for 2 weeks and the other that even the Cubs consider a longshot. Any ideas as to the teams/individuals involved?
