  1. Exactly... You respond perfectly within that hyperbole again. It doesn't take much "sanity" or "wisdom" to just post a big stubborn "HE SUCKS MOST EVER," or "NO AND THAT'S ALL THAT'S NEEDED," "DONT YOU GUYS KNOW HES GOOD/BAD/etc.?" and never support any of it. That's essentially all I've ever seen you do. Then if anyone challenges any of it, or wants to spark an intelligent conversation from it, you shy away or post a picture for metaphor or whatever seems fitting at the time to avoid it. You can do whatever you want but since you questioned the response you received, I thought I'd clue you in.
  2. so you're anti-adding minor league talent i see? interesting. How in the world can you jump to that conclusion? From the "No and that's all that's needed" perhaps? Have you attempted an intelligent response? Because all I see from you is totally empty blanket statements that always lack reasoning and logic. You'd probably not get absurd responses if all of your posts weren't so absurd and devoid of information.
  3. So on page 2 of this forum and on page 35 of the "Sammy Update" thread. That's why a lot of information and conversation ends up hidden on this board. It's its own topic as far as I'm concerned and I'd only run across it if it had its own thread. It's like if one conversation goes off on a tangent then that tangent can never be discussed anywhere else. Oh well. Sorry, moderator, for not reading every page of every post in the last few days to find it.
  4. I looked back pages in "Baseball Discussions" for any relevant thread title until the time the article was posted. Where else would it be? I suppose now I should expect 12 people with "IBL LOL " posts and then someone telling me I should have looked on page 8 of the "Mark Cuban" thread or page 53 of the "Sammy Update" thread?
  5. Oh boy, what I wouldn't give for a 36 year old catcher with a bad knee who's been below average defensively!
  6. Exactly. Any good performance is "very obvious fluke" and any awful performance is the best way to judge the rest of the player's career. Brilliant and objective, indeed.
  7. Uh oh, doesn't this mean we need to change the thread title again? I thought "because of Hendry" was absolute fact and I made no sense when I said it was crazy to put that in the headline?
  8. Correct and yet never ever do we hear the reason for trades failing as a flat and empty "Because of [GM]." Perhaps a much longer thread title explaining Hendry's apparent original intentions and the reasons the deal broke would be more appropriate yet obviously impractical. So that's why usually we're just informed of the actualities and can read and form a conclusion ourselves. Of course the reason isn't "because of Hendry" anyway -- it's because of Hendry's decision that it wasn't helping the Cubs enough (or whatever his reasoning). Otherwise, every single thread in transactions should say "Because of Hendry" or the respective GM at the end, no? "Petrick called up because of Hendry," "Dempster to DL because of Hendry," etc. It's not that it's "wrong" so to say, it's just a little absurd. I'd say the popular opinion of Hendry (as fat, lazy, dumb and incompetent) is what helps "because of Hendry" seem like mature reasoning... I just think it's funny.
  9. Guys, Bruce Miles - perhaps our most respected source on this board - is where we got the info that Zell had nothing to do with the deal being canceled and that it was indeed Hendry pulling out. Then I wonder why Bruce Miles didn't use the headline "Deal off because of Hendry." Or, "Because of Hendry, Jones still a Cub." Odd that it's not. Reporters don't write headlines, editors write healdines, and the editors didn't put Hendry in the headline because he is not the critical part of the article from a news angle. He specifically said in the game thread that Zell did not interefere, and that he felt the main reason the deal did not get done was because of Hendry. You can check it out for yourself if you like. I'm sorry, I guess you really really missed the point. But thanks for telling me I can open the game thread. I'll check it out and see if it makes me think the phrasing of the thread title is any less ridiculous.

  11. Not officially, but probably Tom Cowley. It was essentially "nothing" besides the roster space and league minimum for next year. It was a desperate move for nothing that required $6.6M cash exchange to the Marlins so paying that now to save $380k next year does seem all too typical of a veto from Zell's perspective if he had no interest in the "welfare" of the team.
  12. Thanks for the information. If only Soriano12 were GM.
  13. Certainly possible. But we're down to 20 minutes. And if Selig has to approve of a deal, then its looking increasingly unlikely. The Cubs could just DFA Jones and it buys them 10 days if there was anything holding up a transaction before the game. That would give the Marlins (or any other team wanting him) so much leverage though. Exactly. At that point the marlins could just say "Well, if you dont give us what we ask for, we'll just let you have to release him. Then you have to pay his whole salary. Sucks to be you" Yep, they could pick him up, give up nothing, and pay him the league minimum. No there is not exactly leverage to gain here. The Marlins don't say, "Oh, go ahead and release him then!" Using that theory, no player who is DFA'd would ever be traded but it's not quite that dramatic. If the reports on the trade are true, the Marlins pay about what they'd have to sign him for anyway. My point is there is no gun-to-your-head deadline as if it's the trading deadline for the Marlins to rest on. It's not like a DFA will suddenly tell teams we're not willing to keep Jacque around much longer. It's quite past that point. We're not talking about trying to trade a Carlos Zambrano that you DFA for convenience. It'd have very little effect on the return the Cubs receive and are looking for.

  15. I'd say this thread is a good example of when keeping all "sort of related" conversation in one thread can be a bad idea.
  16. According to ESPN, it is not Marcus Giles, but Brian Giles that is being fined. It was Marcus in the infield, right? Was Brian even playing? http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2908417 Definitely Marcus. Brian is and has been on the DL with a bruised knee. It's Brian that was fined from everything I've heard. You can't come on the field while on the DL which is why the fine would make much more sense being issued to Brian than Marcus.
  17. I know I've said "this is the last time I'll bump" a couple times but every time I do, I get more responses yet no one has gone beyond casual interest yet. You could meet up for the tickets today, tomorrow or Wednesday in the city (I'm out of town so they are currently with someone who is near Midway). Give me your best offer on 2 or 4 tickets. Thanks!
  18. Alright, I guess I'll give it one more try. I had a couple people sort-of interested by PM but no one has taken them yet.
  19. Impressive... How about: it'd be the dumb move to pass on Wieters. Trumped!
  20. Aw, c'mon Roast, buy yourself a little gift and go two days in a row! Man, I really hate having to eat tickets.
  21. Hi guys, I have 4 tickets available for Wednesday, June 13th, 7pm game vs. Seattle in the GA bleachers. It's a "prime date" game so they are $42 face plus another $5.something per ticket in service fees and whatever else they tack on so, I'd really like to recover this. (especially since I left it sitting on a credit card so it's actually costing me more now)-- Anyone interested? And, yes, I know the Cubs stink and maybe I'd be lucky to get shoelaces and yadda-yadda. But c'mon some of you want to scout Ichiro before he makes his way here, right? Oh and the first 10,000 get a free Ernie Banks cap, so there's always that.
  22. I don't know that it's really a"legit concern." It's a small sample size. And he wasn't being played everyday. He's a young player. Hitting both left and right hand pitching has never really been a problem with him. I also think that part of those numbers reflect not playing everyday. Pie was not used properly when up the last time. IMHO, he's a better player then both Jones and Pagan. For that reason, I see no issue with letting him play everyday and developing further in the ML. I also believe that it makes the Cubs a better team. (Especially defensively) Why would it not be a legitimate concern? His minor league numbers this year and last year do not represent all that small of a sample size. His numbers against lefties the last couple years (2005 in West Tenn, 2006 in Iowa, 2007 in Iowa and 2007 in Chicago) are .240 BA / .297 OBP / .345 SLG. I don't see why you think this is no problem. The fact that he's doing even worse most recently is not very encouraging. Again, I'd play him every day too but I'm not sure how someone would dismiss this.
  23. Nothing personal, Andy, but WTF???????? How in the heck to figure that putting a more talented player in CF everyday is "conceding" the season? I've never heard the argument that putting inferior players out on the field is somehow a better way to go about winning games? Seriously!!! Pie is MLB ready. I thought it was obvious when he was up. He doesn't walk as much as you'd like, but that doesn't mean that he's not better then half the OF the Cubs continue to trot out there. Pie should be called up, he should start everyday. And by doing that you improve your chances of winning, IMHO. I agree that you play Pie every day. He's meant to be your everyday CF going forward and you let him grow into it now. However, there's legit concern that he's hitting .156/.229/.219 against lefties (and .256/.322/.327 last year). Pagan was awful against lefties last year but has been decent this year.
