  1. Nothing anybody could do on that steal-Podsednik stole that one off of Hill. still, font (or was it iz?) had to jump to catch it. that's a very bad throw And he took forever to get rid of it.
  2. I know, getting outs is such a favor to the offense.
  3. While that was stolen on Hill, Bowen took forever to get rid of the ball and it was a crap throw anyway.
  4. Depends on if you believe the cubs would have offered arbi to Barrett. If you believe they would have (as I do), then it was REALLY bad as they would be giving up two high draft picks. If you believe that they wouldnt have offered him arbi then it was just a mildly bad trade. Bowen is hitting well this year but thats inflated by a ridiculously high (and unsustainable) BABIP. He has a decent ISoD, but strikes out 30% of the time so he'll always have a low average to give him a meh OBP. His defense was touted scouting wise as a prospect, but is debatable now. Don't pay attention to his SB% as the SD pitchers don't hold runners. Basically hes a pretty decent backup catcher. Hes probably not better than Soto. Burke is was a supplemental pick last year, so he was highly thought of, but as a position player (corner OF) out of highschool, hes ridiculously raw. Hes athletic, but has sucked horribly in his pro career. Hes got upside, but hes really really far away and has a good chance of flaming out. In my opinion, this trade hurts the team now and hurts the team in the future.
  5. that's why I'm currently on vicodin (somehow my cartilage is no longer attached to a large section of my ribcage) Sweet, now you can get drunker faster!!!!
  6. I am one of the few who has really never liked Barrett. But you have to look at it from the standpoint of there's no way he would be re-signed next year to a similar contract that he's received over the past four years. Also, as much as I dislike Hendry, maybe some players expressed some dislike for Barrett. I don't know. Having said that, if you were another MLB team would you have given up a lot for Barrett? I sure wouldn't. I still think it's funny that seven years ago Felipe Alou said that Barrett would never be a good MLB catcher (from a defensive standpoint). Seven years later I think Barrett is closer to being a bad defensive catcher than a good one. And yet, he could actually hit. I would have rather gotten the supplemental pick and Barrett for the rest of the year than a backup catcher and a awful prospect. You wouldn't need an offensive catcher if you had a GM smart enough to get offensive players at other positions. The Astros and Cardinals have done quite well over the past ten years without offensive catchers. I think the whole point is we dont...
  7. As you should be. Bowen is an older Geovany Soto, the prospect is rawer than sushi and stinking worse than week old sushi, but has upside.
  8. How can you tell what place you are in for all of Yahoo?
  9. 12 team 5x5 roto, 5 keeper. Deeper than typical because of 5 bench spots and 5 DL spots. I'm getting ancy and am trying to find a way to improve my team, but have made a bunch of moves to bring in guys I really like. Some are doing OK, some are currently struggling. I'm dominating pitching, but am lacking in power categories (way behind on RBIs) as Berkman and Manny aren't doing much. I'd like to sell high on Griffey and Pena, but haven't gotten a lot of bites and frankly, other than Holliday, they are my few power sources right now so its hard to let them go. 2B and 3B aren't producing a ton right now but they are all big upside guys. Heres my team: C-Barrett 1B-Berkman 2B-Durham SS-Rollins 3B-Braun MI-Kendrick CI-Gordon OF-Manny OF-Holliday OF-Victorino OF-Griffey UT-Carlos Pena BN-Dye BN-E. Encarnacion BN-Taveras BN-Kinsler BN-Iwamura DL-Baldelli SP-Smoltz SP-Beckett SP-Blanton SP-Billingsley RP-Wagner RP-Reyes P-Valverde P-Burnett (ran out of DL slots) DL-Randy Johnson DL-Phil Hughes DL-Harden DL-Pedro
  10. Good riddance to Barrett, now the team will be error free!!!!! Oh crap...

    SS Issues

Agreed, ride him out. His steals will help. If you had better alternatives, maybe, but none of those guys are exciting.
  12. Abreu's turnaround came at the same time as the Yank's turnaround. I don't think people would be very happy if they got rid of him for prospects. Melky is pretty good, but there are are a ton of cheap 1B options the yanks could go pickup without really having to give up top prospects.
  13. My favorite part is that now cubs.com writes in ebonics.
  14. Why would trading Barrett allow them to find out how Hill was tipping pitches? Because the cubs played against Bowen and the Padres Sunday. If Hill was tipping his pitches, you better believe all the Padres hitters were told what to look for.
  15. Ugh, not only is Z spending more time on the internet, he must have stolen Rob's password!
  16. I'm definitely no Roast when it comes to Sammy, but even I got a bit choked up there.
  17. I would agree. Floyd is not a big-time run producer right now, but he's not a black hole either. Also, trading for a RF means that Murton cannot come back up and contribute later in the season, and I think he can team up with Floyd again to stabilize RF after the break. SS needs to be upgraded-I'm just not sure how many options there are around the league to be able to do that. Those things go hand in hand. SS is the bigger problem, with bottom of the barrell production. But RF is way down the list as well. Floyd is no guarantee to be a full-time producer, and while Floyd/Murton might stabilize the position, the Cubs need more than stabilization. They need production, ASAP. Floyd and Murton are both LFers. And it may be hard to find a real SS. So barring the sudden collapse of the Yankees and ARod trade, or about face by the Orioles and Tejada trade, the Cubs may have to get themselves RF help. During the offseason Meph showed that a marginal upgrade from Izturis to Lugo (obv not Lugos #s so far for this season), would be a bigger upgrade than Soriano provided us. While I agree it will be hard to find a really good SS, it will be harder to find a RF who would provid us a greater marginal value than upgrading at SS. I fear Hendry will go after Griffey.
  18. I wouldn't say it hinges. I would think there's a better chance Hendry realizes they need offensive help now that Barrett has been replaced for defensive purposes. And hopefully he realizes that SS and RF are the two biggest need spots for that improvement. So if a guy walks into the ER with a gunshot wound, no ones going to do anything about it, but if while waiting someone stabs him in the leg, then the doctors will need to take care of the gunshot wound? For clarification: guy=cubs gunshot wound=SS someone who stabs guy=Hendry stabbing wound =losing Barrett taking care of gunshot wound=upgrading offensively at SS This analogy is better than it appears at first. :D Yeah, thats why I opted to include the clarification So who are the doctors? Supposed to be Hendry, but turns out hes just the one stabbing the cubs.
  19. I sometimes just sit here and smile as I come home and read through the pages after an eventful day for our cubbies. i always just think to myself--man, I wish this board could have been here to hear what people said when the cubs got a terrible prespect named Sandberg and terrible hitting shortstop for Ivan DeJesus Burke has been horrid in the minors so far - Sandberg was much better in the minors. Truth. Gotta love the baseball cube. Not to mention Baseball-Reference Yeah, Dejesus and his 44 OPS+ sure was worth crying over.
  20. i forgot about that. I'd rather have that than what we got. Friggin read my posts... sorry i missed it in the 40+ pages of this thread #-o psh, we're only at 39
  21. More importantly, does this mean no cheeseburger deep dish pizzas anymore?
  22. i forgot about that. I'd rather have that than what we got. But that involves the risk of offering arbitration and having Barrett back next year - the Cubs didn't seem like they were going to offer arbitration to him. I'm going to be uber pissed if Soto isn't called up. well, get ready to be uber pissed... While the cubs didnt seem like they were going to offer arbi to him that doesnt mean it wouldnt have been the smart thing to do. Cubs offering arbi to Barrett at the end of the season makes this a horrible trade. Cubs not offering arbi to Barrett at the end of the season makes this just a mildly bad trade. Hooray for idiocy!
  23. i forgot about that. I'd rather have that than what we got. Friggin read my posts...
  24. It's either one but no team would sign him before 12/1. Plus, he'd be dumb not to except, unless you're assuming he changes how he has played so far this year and there's an expected demand for him. One more year of Barrett equals one more year of a likely declining C both defensively and offensively (from the '06 Barrett) and gives Soto his 3rd year at Iowa. I'm all for Soto, this hopefully cleared the way. What signs have been given to make us think Soto is being considered? It seems pretty clear that they are planning to use Bowen as the main catcher. If they wanted to bring up Soto, why trade for a catcher? Hendry mentions Soto a few times during his press conference today so Geo is, at the very least, being considered. In my mind, a great sign that Geo is being considered for the ML team would be to, you know, not just acquire a player nearly identical to him. But thats just me, maybe Im just using that stupid logic.
