  1. Wouldn't be bad insurance for Chavez.
  2. God only knows. Maybe they'll flip him. I think that they think they will be able to get back in this thing. They have the last few years anyways. Houston has never been one of the smartest cities in the US. However to their credit they have do have one of the largest stripper populations in the United States :-). They have some of the best Gentleman's Clubs in the nation. Treasures is truly an awesome place. If Vance knows anything about anything, this is the subject. :P I once saw a bunch of Cubs in there a night after a game. Of course, I wasn't paying any attention to the Cubs players at the time. That was probably the first time you've seen Cubs players and not gone up to ask for an autograph. Or asked if you could take a picture of Addison sitting in their laps.
  3. What distinguishes him as Type A versus type B? I believe it is something along the lines of top 20% in certain statisical categories. Is there a definitive answer to this and as of right now would Linebrink fall into that category? Elias Sports decides it. Its a non-public formula so no one can say for sure.
  4. He struggled in the transition, but has been dealing lately. You look at his overall numbers in AA and don't see much, but hes turned it on. Its a small sample size either way. He doesn't project as a front of the rotation guy, but when the market is 8M a year for a #4, he sure as hell is valuable.
  5. The chemistry problems were the icing on the cake. The defensive lapses (which were always a problem, but were at their worst this year) along with the terrible offense (OBP of .307 :(), made his leash very short. What do you mean his performances would make him more affordable to us? His performance is why we shouldn't want him for even $1M per year. The defense was always bad and the offense as I said (and numerous studies support) was unlikely to pickup, given his age/position. Replacing a bad player with worse players is a bad idea. You can talk about getting rid of a bad player, but that only helps you if you have a better player to replace him with. The Cubs didn't. Rob Bowen's Pros (in order of importance) .268/.371/.439, OPS+ 120 Significantly better defense League-minimum salary, signed through next year 26 years-old Has never punched opponent, or own pitcher Why is he worse? Where did you get those numbers? His current OPS+ is 75. Perhaps you were referring to his numbers this year before the trade, but he accomplished that in a handful of ABs, not a meaningful sample compared to his entire pro career, in which he has been mediocre. He is a back up catcher at best. Well, in that case he has no sample size in his entire career to satisfy you. Last year he had 94 ABs in 94 games. He had 27 and 10 ABs the two years before. This year, he was getting more (and more consistent) PT than he had ever received before (thus making this year's stats more important than "his entire pro career"). Therefore, yes, those stats are from before the trade and represent the best possible look at Bowen's potential (for the rest of 2007 at least). We needed a stopgap anyway. Barrett would be gone after '07 trade-or-not, and Soto/Hill/Fox are, at best, no better than Bowen (except maybe Soto, who would need to be tried out as a backup first anyway; being under Barrett or Bowen would make no difference if Soto is the eventual future). We weren't going to get a great catcher for '08 out of trading Barrett for sure, so why not get a defensively capable, affordable, young stopgap? If only Jim were smart enought o look behind the #s to see that they were completely flukey and unsustainable.
  6. Um..... I'm surprised SD gave Hairston as much time as they did before pulling the plug on that experiment. I'm surprised they couldnt get more than Rosales for him :D
  7. When you've got GMs like Hendry and Krivskey involved, it might. These little one-off cheap shots are getting annoying. Its not just you who is doing it, but it breaks-up an otherwise intelligent discussion. Is it a cheap shot or a retort based on quotes an actions by our current GM? Fair point. I guess it depends on you p-o-v. It seems like a generalization to me. I think Hendry has done some good things recently and to directly compare him to Krivskey is both irrational and unfair. Well it seems that the slam was directly about not understanding sample size. Krivsky has shown that in regards to his relief pitcher infatuation and Hendry has shown that as I mentioned above. Whether you like or dislike those two GMs, it seems like an extremely fair point to make that both don't understand sample sizes.

  9. My stupid girlfriend has RCN, am I screwed? Can't find the game. Nevermind, 99.

  11. Harden is listed as N/A on yahoo. Hes on the DL, not in the minors, what the hell?
  12. Interesting intradivision move. Damn padres, winning every trade.
  13. i don't hate it... but Murton/Hill/Marshall/Pie better not be a part of it. plus, if Hendry wants Dunn for himself, would he actually HELP another team get him. seems like he'd try and get him for himself if a deal like that were close. Probably because Hendry really doesnt want Dunn for himself. Ohh and add Gallagher to that list.

  15. What is three games going to show the Reds, especially since he's not even starting tonight? mlbtraderumors says Levine mentioned any deal would probably involve Gallagher and Murton. Well we traded for Kendall after watching him for like 3 games...look how great that worked out for us.
  16. It's quite alright. We all had to start somewhere learning about this stuff. I still don't want anybody asking me about the difference between SuperVORP and WARP. can i ask...not trying to be a jerk...but i was curious about those things too... Just don't ask Rob to tell you when to use WARP vs WARP3. I still maintain that comparing Ichiro to other players in the AL this year is more important than comparing him to guys who played during WWII. :D I was just pushing your buttons.
  17. Payton is not in his walk year first of all-he also has another year left on his contract. Payton has had 0 seasons in the last 4 over a 95 OPS+, Jones has had 2. Jones has the better chance to rebound to be something pretty good, while Payton is simply an expensive bench player at this point. If you look at 08 (when Floyd will almost certainly not be re-signed) who would you rather have as the 4th OF? I don't think it's a terrible deal for the Cubs, but it's not a good deal either. Is everyone just ignoring my second edit? Are we expected to just keep going back to re-read your posts because you decide to edit them over and over again? Yes. MISTAKES ARE NOT TOLERATED!! :D
  18. Decided not to trade is typically code for waiting for the last minute offers to fly in just before the deadline. Cincy without any major moves is destined to maintain their level of mediocrity. I think Cinci is slowly becoming the worst run team in baseball. Even taking my post above into consideration I don' tknow where you are getting the slowly from...

If I'm cinci and I don't get bowled over with an offer I hold onto them. Dunn has more value to be traded in the offseason than he does right now. As for Griffey, his value is probably at its highest but as hes not going to be a FA they can wait if they dont get what they want from a contender and probably not lose any value (unless of course he gets injured in the next two months, which is a distinct possibility).

  21. Upton for Dunn would be a horrible deal for the D-Backs. I would actually ask Cinci for more, I don't care that Dunn is proven. Yeah, no way. I love Dunn, but Upton is the most untouchable minor leaguer. We are only talking about 2 months of Dunn folks, theres no way Cinci is going to get the Moon.
  22. http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports_hardball/2007/07/another-white-s.html If is is possible that the Mariners would give up Balentien for Garland, I think the Sox should do it. I didn't know Kenny doesn't want to trade Garland. He sure as hell should want to trade him.
  23. Unless it's changed, I believe that limit is 20 days (although I don't think that limit applies to pitchers). I believe its 30 days.
