  1. Where'd this come from? Odd that he'd consent to get traded to a team in which he wouldn't close.
  2. Link Isn't that a couple days old? the article has today's date. can't say how recent his source told him that though Yeah, I seem to remember those exact words a couple of days ago. I wouldn't mind it happening, but I think he's just throwing out possibilities rather than substantial rumors. It was in another thread, thats probably what you are thinking about. Also, the 3 team Bosox deal is old news, the new news is a sending Wily Mo and a minor league pitcher for Dye. Sox beat reporters suck worse than cubs beat reporters (except for Bruce, he doesnt suck). Manny Delcarmen. I didn't specify because it wasn't clear whether or not it was going to be Delcarmen or Masterson, or even one of their others, but supposedly now the deal is dead because the BoSox didnt want to give up Delcarmen or Masterson.

  4. Agreed, even if the reds had gotten a 3/4 full bag of balls it would have been a decent return. To get a 3rd rounder is...well, wow. I guess this evens out the Iguchi for nothing trade.
  5. After the deadline, players must pass through "revocable" waivers prior to being traded. For this example, let us assume there is a formerly great player, Maynard Wingtip of the Texas Rangers, who now pretty much sucks except for hitting against LHP, which he still does quite well. Wingtip's contract calls for him to be paid $15 million in each of the next two seasons. The Red Sox have a need for a player who can mash LHP. They have some interest in Wingtip, but only if the Rangers pick up some of his remaining salary. The Rangers have indicated a willingness to do so, if they get some good prospects in return. So, on August 5th, the Rangers place Maynard Wingtip on revocable waivers. These are called revocable waivers because the Rangers can pull him back off of waivers at any time. The Yankees, not wanting the Red Sox to improve themselves, have the option of claiming Wingtip on waivers, effectively blocking the Red Sox from acquiring him. The Yankees have this opportunity because their record is worse than that of the Red Sox. Please see my earlier post about the order of waiver claim opportunity. If the Yankees put in a claim, the Rangers can do one of two things - they can pull Wingtip back off of waivers and keep him, or they can let the Yankees have him, contract and all. In this example, it is extremely unlikely that the Yankees would ever claim Wingtip, because they would most likely wind up stuck with him and his inflated contract. This is why players with small remaining financial obligations generally have trouble making it through waivers and players with large remaining financial obligations often pass through easily. Also, I believe this is true, but am not 100% certain: A team can attempt to get a player through waivers only once. If they try and wind up pulling him back, they cannot later try to get him through waivers again. Please feel free to correct anything I may have gotten wrong. Also, it doesnt have to be a black and white, either pull him back off waivers or give him up for nothing deal. It can be a player for player swap, but that other player would also have to pass through waivers (or I guess be claimed by the other team).
  6. you say that as if the Cubs have had hitters go elsewhere and blossom into great hitters since...oh, let's say anytime in the past 20-25 years. Joe Carter wasn't to shabby now was he, I believe he has a couple rings on his finger! I wasn't talking about just hitters I was talking about any player, pitcher, batter and ballgirl for that matter. Joe Carter was pretty terrible. No he wasn't: http://www.baseball-reference.com/c/cartejo01.shtml I hadn't realized that having a baseball reference page made a baseball player not terrible. He wasn't terrible, but he wasn't that good. People remember one swing of his and think he was a God.
  7. Wow, Ensberg is the anti-Twin type of player.
  8. We would get a shot at him first, no? Goes from worst to first in AL, then worst to first in NL. So, no.
  9. I would imagine people are scared at what a wrist injury can do to a power hitter based on DLees experience. Especially a hitter like Tejada that had a downturn in power before this. Everyone is just waiting for Tejada to fall off the cliff, but he sure could be worth the risk if he doesn't. I'd love to acquire Ramon Hernandez (who they should be actively shopping) as well in any deal with the O's
  10. That trade is lopsided. Thats like saying that Meph has a disliking of Marquis.
  11. Who's out there to get that we won't get fleeced over? Griffey? Dunn? Renteria? Probably forgetting a few others. Julio Lugo, Ramon Hernandez, Torii Hunter...
  12. Salty is likely moving to 1B to replace Texiera. They don't want to wear his bat down by playing C everyday in the Texas heat. Because that Texas heat affected Pudge so much. And Salty's from Florida, played in the GCL, Sally, Carolina, and Southern League, ohh yeah and Hotlanta. I'm sure hes not used to heat.
  13. yeah, but he just traded a very valuable, long term-inexpensive commodity for a guy who's due to make a killing. yes, a jones's deal is up and he'll be more than replacing that production next year--but i think salty is an all-star sooner than later. both teams got what they wanted. I agree, this was a win win. Andrus and Salty, while valuable (obviously the latter much more than the former) are redundent in the ATL system. They got pathetic production out of 1B this year (one could say Shchuerholz was finger painting while everyone else was playing chess in the LaRoche trade). They get a year and a playoff run out of Tex and 2 draft picks. Schuerholz's confidence in their latin development and drafting allows this to go down.
  14. Bah, I would have liked for us to insert ourselves in the deal to provide pitching prospects for Renteria.
  15. Hmm, I didnt get the memo that James, Tango and others decided to retire. I was under the impression that they were still out there working on trying to explain this stuff and dig deeper.
  16. Tells us that Houston is stupid? The Jason Jennings trade told us that a while back. Exactly. Basing a player's worth on his team's (or former team's) actions is pretty ignorant.
  17. And lets get him to agree to 5/85 like he wanted at the beginning of the season.
  18. I wouldn't want him long term, but I'd definitely welcome someone with more HR than anyone on the team for the rest of the season. Exactly what I'm saying. That guy will go back down to his career norms which are about as good as Jacque Jones but just with a couple more homeruns. Hunter is obviously a rental, no question about it. In another thread I proposed Jones + Murton for Hunter. Twins get two outfielders for next year for cheap. We get a very productive CF for 2 months and 2 draft picks.
  19. Santana is making 12M, Nathan is making 5M. 12+5<<<<< Santanas salaring in the FA market.
  20. Dumb. JK. I'm not big in any way on trading Pie, but at the same time, if we think we can add that big piece that could make the difference between winning the division and playing golf in October, I say you gotta roll the dice. I'm sure Hendry, if these rumors are true, would probably do his best to hold on to Pie, but considering that he thinks Colvin is the second-coming of Jim Edmonds, I'm thinking he might gamble. If Pie goes, it better be part of a larger deal than just Griffey. If the Reds send Arroyo to ATL and we get Renteria, that might not be too bad. Both players are way under market because of deferred payment in Griffey's case and Boston picking up most of Renteria's salary. It would all depend on the other players involved, but "under market" or not Griffey and Renteria would be a huge pickup of salary for the new owners. Renteria is owed about 5M next year, Griffey about 9M. If I'm a potential owner the Cubs look a hell of a lot better of a team to me with both those guys on the roster for 2008 than a 14M cheaper payroll. Add in the fact that it could the reigning world champion cubs and it looks like a good investment to me.
