  1. What an assenine comment. If you've read this thread you'd know that the whole argument for wanting the cubs to miss the playoffs is because fans would like to be able to point to more than 3 out of the last 40 seasons as seasons we had a chance. The word you're looking for is asinine. What's "assenine" is your logic. People don't want the Cubs to make the playoffs because we've been lousy in the past? That's just flat out stupid. No real fan would ever want the team they supposedly support to not make the playoffs. Correcting spelling...the sure sign of someone who has a weak argument. I'll bold the asinine comment. If you've read the thread at allyou will realize that those who may not want the team to win, only do so because they are fans who would like to "enjoy the ride" more often than they have been able to in the past. Your implication that those who do not want them to make it to the playoffs aren't real fans just make you look ignorant/you haven't read the thread/unable to follow very simple logic that has been clearly delineated multiple times. If you're going to comment on the intelligence of my post, at least freaking spell the words right that way you don't make yourself look like a complete... nevermind. Regarding the body of your post... all that needs to be said is that if you don't want the Cubs to make the playoffs, you're not a true fan. It's that simple. Not if that fan believes that by not making the playoffs, the team will make the playoffs more often in the future. Like I said, I think its a flawed assumption, but really, how hard is that to understand?
  2. Where did anyone say anything other than that? I cried so hard it hurt during the scene in your sig lastnight.
  3. Where did anyone say anything other than that? Hmm, I don't know. I just assumed that the previous posts wanted him to fail or get him out of baseball and I read what I wanted to read I suppose. I was wrong thinking that. No one said anything about him retiring DURING the year, they mean after the year.
  4. Even if all 4 of those young guys start, our salary for 2008 is already higher than it is for 2007, without an ARod acquisition. We aren't getting ARod, unless we add over 30M to the payroll.
  5. Maybe Riccardi learned from DePo to fear the media...MacDonald should send a check to Plaschke. Ricciardi and Depooooo wouldnt know a prospect if it were Babe Ruth in front of them. DePo gets no credit for Kemp, Loney, and Martin? . Not at all period, they were all signed and drafted by Logan White who should be getting some considerations for a Gm, all three of these guys were drafted and signed before Mr Personality came to the Dodgers and White is still with the Dodgers.Tell the truth, did DePo sleep with your wife? People need to know the scoreboard and the fact is Logan White had everything to do with Kemp, Loney and Martin and Depo had nothing to do with them! DePo is the one who didn't trade them off for marginal veterans. Thats good but I think Hillary Clinton or John Kerry would know not to trade those players and Im sure White would have argued quite a bit not to do so. Also Depo's buddy Ricciardi is very famous for letting go of Delgado, Carpenter and Escobar without getting a drop of water for those players and they're still 500 6years later after he took over for a 500 club. Also traded Izturris/Quantril for Prokopec/Ricketts when he could have had Gagne Well then maybe we should look to Hilary Clinton and John Kerry as Hendry's replacement, because he's sure guilty of it. Nice how you move the argument off of DePo and to Riccardi when your points fail. Additionally, DePo should be credited for Eithier. Well this posting started with the signing of Mcdonald which is a result of Ricciardi! As most of the good posters know that Ricciardi/Depodesta were together at Oakland. Yeah, if you look up, I was the one who started that connection in this thread. The underlying tone of that, was that signing MacDonald appears to be a completely un-saber move.
  6. no. Why should he cede a point if he thinks hes right? Unfortunately, he doesn't care about if anyone agrees with his points and then cries Meph-hating when people make the reasonable request for him to explain his position. People would like him a lot more if he added "because of YXZ" to his posts. Or at least I would.
  7. I guess the rest of us plan on not dying before next October. They spent a fortune in the offseason for this exact reason - to get us to the postseason. And once we get close, now you want the team to tank so we'll have a better team in the future? This is the kinda logic only a tortured soul like a Cubs fan could conjure up. Me personally? If you've read the thread you will see that I want them to win because I think the assumptions that if they don't make it they will become a better team are fairly weak given their current situation. If you told me that I could sacrifice making the playoffs this season for a much improved team for next year and beyond that would have a significantly greater chance of making the playoffs more often than the current team, then hell yes, I'd want to miss the playoffs. Exactly that, I don't plan on dying before next season. The more times you are in the playoffs, the better chance you have of winning a WS. Everyone seems to conceed that point, yet few are taking the logic to the next level. I sure hope Hendry spent a fortune in the offseason not to get the cubs into the playoffs in 2007, but to get them in as many times as possible 2007-2012 or so. If youre going for broke in year 1 when you just signed mutiple long term 9 figure contracts, well then you are a complete idiot.
  8. You allude to the fact that every team has a shot, once they get into the playoffs. Meaning that once you get into the playoffs, the chance you will win is 1/8. So, simply speaking, the cubs have been getting into the playoffs about once every 4 years. Meaning we will get into the playoffs 8 times in the next 32 years (1 world series). The assumption in the thread is that if the cubs miss the playoffs there will be a turnover in philosphy which will lead to a better team which will result in a team that gets into the playoffs once every other year (or more due to the weak division). Meaning we will get into the playoffs at least 16 times in the next 32 years (2 world series). Thats the thread in a nutshell. If people understand that concept, the only thing worth debating are the assumptions made of what will happen if the team loses to lead them to creating a better team.

  13. Miami would be a good market if their stadium was close to anything and had a roof. No one wants to drive 40 minutes to the middle of nowhere to sit in the 95 degree sun. Sure Cubs, Red Sox, Yankees, Dodgers and Giants fans might do it, but not many teams would. Not to mention the 90% humidity. I had friends that used to live down there and they said that going to the games was physically uncomfortable.

  15. Why would they want that guy, 1st of all he cant evaluate and secondly, he tried to destroy a talented Dodger organization and the third reason, he's got zero personality. It looks like the Pirates have named Frank Coonelly from Seligs office as the CEO and they want a person who can evaluate which certainly isnt Depodesta, it should be someone like Logan White who's one of the main reasons why the Dodgers are becoming successful once again or our guy Tim Wilken who's track record is 2nd to none!Didn't DePo rebuild their system? No, DePo didn't rebuild anything. He just made a couple really good trades that were universally panned at the time and ended up being a big reason why the team was/is a playoff contender. Logan White, their scouting director (in charge of the drafts), is the man to be credited with the building of their system. I should say universally panned by the media.

  17. I dug up a couple articles when I was defending him at the end of the "Do we really want this cubs team to win" thread.
  18. See Brian, I told you he could single handedly win you the triples category.
  19. Im not sure how its amortized, but you may have to add in 1M of Z's 5M signing bonus, 1M of ARam's 5M signing bonus, 1M of Sori's 8M signing bonus, 1.33M of Jacque's 4M signing bonus and, .5 of Howry's signing bonus. According to Cott's, Lilly's 4M signing bonus was already paid. I assume you have us non-tendering Cotts. So, that adds up for to about 106M. According to Cots we had a 100M payroll this year. Getting rid of Jones gets us back down to about 100M, adding ARod puts us at $130. Sure would be nice if we increased payroll by 30M. For reference it took 5 years (2001 to 2006) to increase our payroll $30M. Also, assuming 3% inflation, half of that increase was due to inflation.
  20. We could do what Texas did if we had, you know, someone like Mark freakin Teixiera to trade away.
  21. No salary leway + not a lot of extra talent to deal + pending sale = very dissapointing offseason to a lot of people in this thread.
  22. No one is talking about "trying" to win. The logic follows that if the cubs miss the playoffs then the philosophy of the team will change (for the better) and we will create a better team resulting in make the playoffs more often. I guess I should have chosen better words. I knew what Derwood's provocative original point was, and while I didn't think it was that outraegous (unlike some other posters) I disagreed with the conclusion that by contending the Cubs are somehow doing long-term harm to themselves. I called for the Cubs to be a .500 team at the beginning of the year, like many other NSBBers, but the only real surprise was how bad the rest of the division would be. Personally I'm relishing the possibility of a playoff berth, not denigrating it because of what might or might not happen to Hendry at the end of the year. Of the four assumptions you laid out, a few of them are very dicey. Hendry fired because the Cubs miss the playoffs even though they were in the division race til September? Extremely unlikely. If the Cubs had lost 90+ games again, well that's another story - so in a sense the "damage" of winning is already done (unless the Cubs absolutely tank the rest of the year). Plus, the wildcard in all of this -- on whether Hendry is retained or not -- is clearly the new Cubs' ownership. Frankly, I think all the the assumptions are dicey, and why I prefaced them saying that I think they are too big. Thats why I outlined them and provided explanations as to why they may not be true. I agree that new ownership is the biggest factor, but I think you underestimate the outcome of this season. Hendry made a gigantic splash this offseason with committing over 300M and another 100M with Z in season. While you, I, and most of this community had reserved expectations, I think we are in the minority. Expectations were high, and have not been met.
  23. Here is a list of his transactions along with a summary of their aggregate win shares. The only trade I can see that was bad was giving up Dave Roberts for Henri Stanley. IMO Roberts is little more than a 4th OF, though.
  24. Then provide a retort.
