  1. The Cubs always have taken a conservative approach with injuries. Guzman will get as much time in the minor leagues as possible. Hendry will not mess around with the rotation if it is successful. So I would say Guzman may not be here until September. I don't believe they'll trade either Clement or Mitre. The Cubs hope to have Dempster pitching somewhere in June. It's too early to say he'd be the first option if somebody falters in the rotation.
  2. Dusty respects hard work a lot. He also gives players who have certain routines (for example, Maddux arrived for spring training work early and left early on days he didn't pitch) a little leeway. I don't think that factors into playing time or Dusty "sticking with" certain players. The lineup is pretty well set, and other than Bako getting occasional starts or Hollandsworth spelling Alou on occasion, it's going to be the same guys in there every day. One thing Dusty excels at is using all 25 guys. That's part of the reason he commands respect from players. He's not a big meetings guy, but he will call guys into his office for chats.
  3. I've not gotten any early reports on Ben. From what I've been told, it's going to be very tough for him to make it to the majors after both elbow and shoulder surgeries. On the other hand, he's a pretty mentally tough kid, and the Cubs won't give up on him. They'll be monitoring his velocity closely.
  4. The Cubs had toyed with the idea but were not ready to pull the trigger until perhaps June. That's from a good source. With the Achilles' injury, I don't see Grud at SS in the near future.
  5. Old Alex had a nice game last night. The Cubs know it's far from a perfect situation there, but they've got to live with it at this point. If the rest of the lineup hits as it should, whatever production Gonzalez provides should be OK. I don't expect him back next year.
  6. Yes, but I can't give you a specific example. I think they'd like to be as versatile as possible, but I'm not sure I'm getting the full meaning of the question.
  7. Don't know who they'll take in the draft. The more the merrier as far as who is writing about baseball. I learn from all of them. The advantage we have is that we can guage emotions and get immediate reactions from players. Hendry is talking but nothing is on the table.
  8. I don't know a name, but I would think a position player would be desirable, and if a good catcher is there, they might go that route.
  9. I don't think it's necessary for every team to be represented. The new format is OK with me. The World Series simply rotated from league to league in years past. Might as well try this.
  10. Sammy will be with the Cubs next year. The Yankees didn't take him when they had the chance, and now teams will indeed think of him as possibly being on the down side. The media have treated Sammy just fine here, and he has the Sun-Times in his hip pocket. This is all Sammy being Sammy. It's Joe's job for the foreseable future.
  11. I don't know the whole story, but part of Leon's duties with the Cubs was to sell players to Japan. I don't think the Cubs did well in this area. Leon also might have wanted to coach hitting, and the Japan team was a good opportunity for him. I think the Cubs have a pretty good reputation in South Korea.
  12. Karros has a no-trade. A team would have to decide if they want to pay Alou for next year, because he'd exercise a lucrative option. I look for him to stay here.
  13. I would project late summer or even September for Kelton. He can hit big-league pitching. The Cubs want him to play and play well at one place for most of the year. They'd like him to regain his confidence in the field, which I hear he is doing. A lot also will depend on if the Cubs trade for a 3B. If Kelton comes up, I'm sure he'd share time with somebody.
  14. Some players who live in Arizona take advantage of the facilities there in winter. Others get prescribed programs from the trainer to do on their own at home. Some players, those with lots of money, can hire personal trainers for off-season work. I'm not sure what the Cubs do with their minor-leaguers, but I can check. The weight room is a busy place even after games. Players may lift weights or do cario work.
  15. Gonzalez is signed for another year, so that makes me doubt they'd sign Tejada or anybody else. They'll look into Matsui. Hendry is much more aggressive than MacPhail. He's not all that "inexperienced." Andy had him doing a lot of the GM duties while he was the assistant. I think Hendry is up to speed on all facets of the job.
  16. Actually, it's not a straight platoon. Choi gets most of the playing time. If things continue the way they are statistically, Choi will play more and more. Contrary to what a lot of people say and post, Baker really does like Choi and he does want to do what's best for the kid.
  17. Night games allow me to get a lot of stuff done around the house early in the day. I get to the park about 2:30 on night-game days, and some players are already there. With night games, there is much more time for players to take extra batting practice and fielding practice. I like my schedule the way it is. Night games on the road and mostly day games at home. If the Cubs wanted to go to 30 home night games, that would be fine with me, too.
  18. If anybody's done the hyping, it hasn't been the Cubs. Hendry has been careful about that. The system is highly regarded among baseball types. It could probably use some more position players, though, and some catchers.
  19. Hendry indeed thought Alf could turn things around, and he might. Overall, he has not thrown the ball badly, but I would still leave Borowski in there. When Alf lost weight and got himself into shape, I think the Cubs were convinced he could close. Jury is still out.
  20. Cubs would probably like to do three or four years.
  21. You can bet on Cruz, Farnsworth, Hill, Beltran being highly coveted. Other minor leaguers such as Krawiec and some of last years draftees also will draw interest.
  22. This was almost a done deal, with the Cubs all set to head to the podium in Nashville to announce it. The KC owner really undermined his GM.
  23. Talks are going, but slowly. It might even take into the winter. Wood can't become a free agent until after 2004. Clement's situation will wait, too.
  24. They do PFP as often as they can. I look for this area to get better.
  25. Good to hear from Hoops. Too early to tell at this point. My guess is they'll pick up his option. But a lot can happen.
