  1. Hate to tell you this, but Hendry loves Bill Hall, just loves him, in an Austin Kearns kind of way. How about in a Rich Hill, he is untradeable kind of way? Or a Juan Pierre, he is worth 3 young pitchers kind of way? Or a ... Yeah, kinda like that.

  3. Look at this game thread. You guys were struggling to come up with 4 pages total when the team was going really, really bad.
  4. That's a good possibility, according to Dusty today.
  5. Thanks Bruce. Not a bad lineup and I like that Murton is in there. Murton again tomorrow; Pagan Thursday
  6. Lineups Cubs Pierre, CF Izturis, SS Barrett, C Ramirez, 3B Jones, RF Murton, LF Mabry, 1B Cedeno, 2B Marmol, P Brewers Gross, CF Graffanino, 2B Fielder, 1B Mench, LF Hall, SS Jenkins, RF Bell, 3B Miller, C Ohka, P
  7. Has anyone informed Jim that the Reds are last in the NL in BA with RISP ? Somehow, they are leading the Wild Card. And that Boston team, they are 13th in the AL in BA with RISP. Bruce, could you mention this stat at some point to Baker or Hendry ? You couldn't fit any curve in the world to batting with RISP. I will mention it to Jim and his people as I've done in a million different discussions. There are scant few of us here in the media who see the whole idea of the importance of OBP, SLG and their result: OPS. (A TV guy asked the OBP questions yesterday, and good for him). The Cubs must outslug their opponents at this ballpark. Maybe they don't want to listen to some writer and his stat-geek friends. LOL.
  8. There you go; I think you answered your own question. It's the same stat he brought up when they signed Jeromy Burnitz. As you say, the stat is entirely random and varies from year to year with each player. All I can do is keep beating the OBP drum and maybe talking with some of their inside people about this silly notion. I did hear the interview today on the way to the park.
  9. The Cubs would prefer to keep Pierre, believing that what they've seen since June is the real Juan Pierre. I'm not aware of any serious talks, of late.
  10. I believe he's sincere in what he said last night and for the last year or so _ that he wants to remain a Cub. What I think will happen is that the Cubs will attempt to restructure the deal to sweeten it and keep him off the open market. Aramis and Jim Hendry have a good relationshp, and the agent, Paul Kinzer, appears to be a very reasonable guy. My gut feeling is that he stays.
  11. Well, you know how the Cubs value defense. Others, myself included, remain skeptical.
  12. Nah, but I got my plugs in for Wuertz, Walker and OBP. Is the weather as bad as it sounds? It was coming down in waves for a while. Looks like it's clearing to the west.
  13. Nah, but I got my plugs in for Wuertz, Walker and OBP.
  14. Bob and Len are terrific to work with and be around.
  15. About 5 minutes
  16. Hill warming up for the eighth with 94 pitches under his belt.
  17. Who ISN'T in sports journalism? Ugh. By saying idiot, I mean a real moron. So do I. There are intelligent writers. Downey happens to be a complete and utter moron. He sounds like a White Sox homer. What writers are you thinking of? Phil Rogers. Paul Sullivan. Mike Kiley. Rozner. etc. All morons. I can only think of two that I respect... Bruce Miles and Rob Neyer. Thanks for clearing that up. I was beginning to get my feelings hurt. In the shameless plug department, I'll direct you to today's Daily Herald, where in my Maddux trade story, I point out the red flags, and the term "on-base percentage" or OBP is mentioned early and often. Take a look at the game story, too, where I say that the Cubs just might want to look into this power thing. Bruce, Are you well-received in the Cubs' circles? Spouting off words such as on-base percentage is practically heresy. Actually, I'm treated quite nicely by the Cubs. I think it's a case of being able to agree to disagree.
  18. Couple things from above as I roast at the ballpark: Yes, Tim Wilken did have signficant input. Hendry mentioned that yesterday. It was Hendry, not the Dodgers, who initiated the prospect route. The Dodgers wanted none of it.
  19. In all fairness, I believe the Cubs tried the prospect route first and the Dodgers wouldn't budge. As many here have said, who could blame them?
  20. Not unless the current people do some serious soul searching and say, "You know what? The way we're doing things just isn't working, and it leads only to hit-and-miss results." That hasn't happened yet. Do you think we are likely to see Pierre signed to a 3 year deal? He certainly fits the mold. And, on that same note, do you think the Cubs would look to deal Barrett and go for a defensive minded catcher? Thanks in advance. I do not think they'll deal Barrett. I'm not sure what they're thinking on Pierre at this point. As you point out, he does fit the mold.
  21. Thanks for posting a link. I guess I'm underwhelmed by these deals. Thanks for all the info you have shared with us. I think its pretty cool that someone in the media still posts on a message board and leaves themselves open to critizism. In your opinion, what would you like to have seen the Cubs do? Thanks Ben I wouldn't have given Walker away for one thing. I would have gone the "prospect" route with Maddux, provided they were the right prospects. I just don't see this trade as making a big, positive impact. Izturis is probably OK in the right spot in the right lineup, but how many times have we seen that with this outfit? Any confirmation on who the prospects could have been? Kemp or Guzman like Carroll reported? Will Carroll appears to be right on.

  23. You and your "new school" baseball philosophy, Bruce! Be careful, Hendry may be restricting your access soon for telling the cold hearted truth about this miserable franchise. Just let him try! LOL
