  1. First, nice semantical wiggle-out. Second, 07' was the first time since 97' that he didn't meet that threshhold, and he blew past it in 08'. So he's a lock.
  2. Cashman is a good GM and this would be a great signing for the Yanks. How many hitters can you literally pencil-in for a .975-1.000-plus OPS, year-in and year-out? I will never understand why more people don't see Manny for what he is: one of the 5 best hitters in baseball over the last 15 years. (along with Bonds, Griffey, ARod, and Frank Thomas.)
  3. Hendry also mentioned - in the context of talking about Dunn- that he doesn't mind guys who strikeout a lot if they have high OBP's and HR totals.
  4. Why? The guy can rake. He's 36, is expensive, awful on defense, and I wouldn't say an .837 OPS for a corner outfielder is "raking". well, I can understand the age, but he can rake it. I understand you define "rake it" different than I do. So be it. Ibanez hit .293 this season, with 23 homers, 110 RBIs, a .358 on-base percentage and a .472 slugging percentage. He is one of just five outfielders who have driven in at least 100 runs in each of the past three seasons. The others: Carlos Beltran, Magglio Ordonez, Carlos Lee and Bobby Abreu. yes because rbis are such a good way to evaluate talent. sorry, a .472 slugging percentage from a corner outfielder isn't raking. he's a good hitter. :P
  5. With respect to your later point, I think the issue is less about the type of coverage (man vs zone) and more about the amount of fruitless blitzing they do.
  6. Happy with the win, but someone please explain why Rashied Davis is active every week when he drops at least two balls per game. He's brutal. Might as well let Bennett play - why is he in the doghouse?
  7. It wasn't 7 for 1, but regardless, giving up quantity doesn't really matter to me. I don't know a single one of those players. Anybody who wants quantity from the Cubs system can go right ahead and take it. I thought Gutierrez is highly regarded?
  8. Agreed, unless the thought is that he simply cannot play RF under any circumstances.
  9. Now you are adding issues to qualify and justify your opinion. There's a difference between saying, "his bat is mediocre", and saying "his bat is mediocre for a corner OF'er earning $10 mill per season". You added two factors that weren't present in your first post. Plus, who says he's getting $10 mill? Bradley is unlikely to get that much; what makes you think that Ibanez will?
  10. How do you figure? His OPS+ the last three years are 125, 121, 124 and that comes in a pitcher's park. I don't like Ibanez all that much, but to say his bat is "mediocre" is pushing it. Yeah, he's been surprisingly good the past few years. But he's also old, and I'd really be scared of what he does going forward. I agree - I'd rather have Bradley, or since we are asking, Dunn.

It is important that we take a contrarion and "half-empty" opinion on all Cubs-related matters. Didn't you get the memo? EDIT: We must also ignore the facts that tend to discredit our contrarion and "half-empty" opinions.
  13. That is worth it if only to shed 6 mill in salary. Frees you up to (perhaps) do more to get Peavy or at least be a player for more than one expensive FA.
  14. To call prospects "worthless" (with some obvious exceptions) is unrealistic, IMO. Value is a subjective quality.

  16. I hope so! He's a real upgrade to the offense. Bradley and Peavy probably equates to the best offseason in my lifetime, even considering losing Wood for nothing (other than creating more payroll flexibility). Friggin' awesome. Looks like I spoke too soon. Oh well - lets get Bradley now.
  17. I don't think you can say with absolute certainty that the Cubs passed because of DeRosa. Its far more likely that DeRosa had nothing to do with it. My bet is that the Phils wanted DeRosa and Towers was demanding that the Cubs give him Vitters, Pie, Hart/Marshall, Marquis and to eat the vast majority of Marquis' salary. I don't blame him for saying "no" to that.
  18. lol No kidding. You'd think Peavy is the second coming of Cy Young. That post reminds me of Little Big League: "Give him whatever he wants! Its Rickey Henderson!"
  19. If that happens it won't be for weeks, IMO.
  20. I wonder how true that is. That could have been misinformation coming from an party who'd like to make life more difficult for the Pads.
  21. I agree. My guess is that DeRosa was not the stumbling block.
  22. Oh well. I guess Towers was asking for too much. I trust Jim's judgment on this. Time to move on to getting Bradley and hopefully moving Marquis.

  24. DeRosa's value will never be higher than it is now. He's a MIF'er who just had a career season, is turning 34, and will be a FA at the end of the year (IIRC). I like him very much, but it is a great time to get something valuable for him.
