  1. Neifi Perez is one of the best back-up SS's in MLB. However, he was looking for a starting job this off-season, so why would he sign with the Cubs if not guaranteed or given a legit shot @ starting for the Cubs in 06'? If he starts he will be an asset defensively & a liability offensively, especially if he bats 1st or 2nd in the line-up. Neifi is alot better than most people give him credit for on this board. This move doesn't suprise me all that much. JH listed his top off-season priorities as improving: defense & pitching & Neifi is a very solid defender. I wish he also had listed OBP. What if Walker is not moved & the Cubs sign Furcal? Cedeno will not see the light of day if he is on the 25 man roster. Neifi will platoon @ 2nd with Walker. This signing of Neifi Perez just made the acqusition of Furcal a little less likely. JH has made it known he doesn't like signing 4 or 5 year deals & that's what it might take to get Furcal. I will not judge JH this off-season until he is done making his moves before ST. If any of you are fair & rational you will do the same. FYI, Patterson was a much bigger detriment to the 05' Cubs than was Neifi, yet by reading this board you could have never make that distinction.
  2. If Millwood resigns with Cleveland, a bunch of teams will be in a bidding War for AJ. I don't think he will get that much either.
  3. They have the Cubs signing Furcal & Encarnacion. http://fantasybaseball.rotoworld.com/content/story.asp?sport=MLB&storyid=17453
  4. The Cubs gave up Justin Jones,Frances Beltran,Alex Gonzalez & Brendan Harris for Nomar & Murton. The Cubs orginally wanted Cabrera, but then the Red Sox got involved b/c they were desperate to get rid of Nomar & knew the Cubs might be interested, in order for Boston to make Hendry bite they had to add Murton to the deal. At the time Boston was already in trade talks with the Twins for Doug Mien.... & were interested in a LH minor league prospect therefore the Cubs traded Jones to Minn. for Murton. That's how I understood the trade.
  5. FYI, Sauerbeck just signed a deal today with Cleveland. Therefore he cannot be moved until the trade deadline. Don't plan on Nomar & Walker as the MI for the Cubs, Hendry has made it perfectly clear he wants to improve the defense.
  6. This is what he made LY: Milton Bradley: signed deal for 2005 season worth 2.5M on 1/4/04- + he can make 750K in performance bonuses based on games and PA
  7. Can TO & Ron Artest play OF? Sign them too, Jim!
  8. http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/team/player.jsp?player_id=407891
  9. Would Mench be a possibility in RF? Unless the Rangers move Soriano they will not trade for Walker.
  10. If Neifi comes back and his only competition for a starting spot is a rookie, guess who starts. My problem isn't with Neifi. My problem is with how Dusty uses him. He should never bat 1st or 2nd in any line-up. 7th or 8th & that's it. JH just say NO to Neifi!!
  11. Take into account this came from one of the least credible sources in all of Chicago sports: Bruce Levine. To me this is not news. He might as well be the leading writter for The National Enquirer, that's if they begin publishing sports. Levine has 0 credibility
  12. The Padres do not make sense since they have Loretta.
  13. Meat, As I have said all along, the Cubs have been acting like they really don't Walker back for at least 2 months now. I don't know if it's his defense or his durability or some lingering clubhouse issue. I think Hendry picked up his option, so that he would have the option of trading him. And considering Walker will only make $2.5M in 2006, he is easily marketable. They really seem to like Cedeno. If you read between the lines, he will be starting at 2B and batting 8th in 2006. Hendry has made it known his priorities for the off-season is to improve the pitching & the defense, therefore trading Walker & not resigning Nomar makes sense.
  14. I got mine off of cards talk. Where do you get yours? Could you post them? Thanks! http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/2004_12_24_mlbcontracts_archive.html here's another one: http://www.mlb4u.com/stl.html
  15. or move Walker & give both Cedeno & Furcal time @ 2nd & SS.
  16. & that's when I turned the game on. A truly amazing finish!
  17. so is Milton Bradley & there are many on this board wanting him traded to the Cubs.
  18. Maddux does have a no trade clause. It highly unlikely he gets moved.
  19. No, the rotation is not set. Rusch isn't assured of a rotation spot. The only real shoe-ins are Z, Prior, Wood (if healthy), and most likely Maddux. One spot, maybe more, is open. The only spot in the rotation that's still up for grabs is the #5 spot & that's between Rusch & Williams. If Williams is traded than Rusch is the 5th SP, if he is not traded, more than likely, Williams will be the #5 starter & Rusch will be the long reliever/swingman out of the pen. The only way both are in the rotation if one of the top 4 guys gets hurt. Williams is better used out of the rotation, so any suggestions he needs to go to the BP will make no sense.
  20. Rotation is set! No need to post anymore Burnett/Millwood/Washburn going to the Cubs posts.
  21. Pujols, Rolen, Edmonds, Isringhausen, Eckstein, Carpenter, King and Mulder account for $63M. Add another $4M if they pick up Suppan's option. The Cards payroll last year was around $90M. I haven't read all the reports, but I did see a few that suggested an increase to $95-96M range was probable going into their new park. Therefore, many think they can easily give Giles $10M a season, and still have money to address their other needs. Assuming they pick up Suppan's option.... 9 guys, 67 mil, best case scenario, 30 million left for 16 players. Workable Signing Giles 10 guys, 77 mil, best case scenario, 20 million left for 15 players. Very difficult. They could get Giles, but that would make the rest of their offseason pretty tight. I actually see them going after a Encarnacion or Jacque Jones type. What makes you think this? Not that I doubt it, I'm just wondering why. Cause I WISH they'd go after one of those, but I have little reason to think that they will. 1)They are both good defensive OF's 2)The Card are already set @ the 1-5 holes. Eckstein,Grudz,Pujols,Edmonds,Rolen. JE or JJ would fit well in one of the 6-8 holes for them. 3) spending 10 mil per year on Giles won't allow them much room at all to improve in other areas like BP & adding another SP.

  23. The Cards have oodles of money to spend? Don't they have tons of money tied up in Rolen,Pujols,Izzy,Mulder,Carpenter & Edmonds "oodles" is one of the last words I'd use to describe the Cards amount of free cash. So basically, Neyer is just talking out his rear-end.
