Imagine if you knew how to throw a baseball really well and were left-handed? You don't even need to be able to throw a baseball very well if you're left handed. I think there are some GM's who would pay just about anyone who could throw a ball 60 feet 6 inches with their left hand. -

I wouldn't spoil a Ruth autograph like that (not that I don't like Aaron). But I guess Boomer is rich enough that he can have a Ruth ball that is just Ruth, etc. Still, though, that would be a pretty kickass ball to have. That's for sure a one-of-a-kind.

He's famous for having some of the quickest wrists in the history of the game. I think he would have been fine. i still think he would have juiced. it's awfully easy for him to sit on his high horse about Bonds when he never had the temptation to begin with I don't even know where to begin attacking that argument. why, because Aaron says he wouldn't? sure, it's presumptuous of me to just assume he would juice, but I think it's going to come to light that the vast majority of players in the 80's and 90's were doing SOMETHING, so why would Aaron be above that had he played in that era? It just seems like you're convicting him already. I'm not going to presume I know anything about Aaron's character past what I've seen on TV and read about over the years. However, just because "the temptation wasn't there" doesn't mean he can't speak out against it. The temptation has never been there for me to steal a car. Does that mean I can't speak out against those who have stolen cars in the past or in the future? I'm just saying your logic is flawed.

Ruth would see one 95mph split-finger and drink himself into oblivion. Ruth would see the bandboxes we play in today (and the launching pad that is Coors Field) and faint from giddyness.

Those of you saying that pitchers are better today are forgetting it works both ways. Yes, pitchers could see film of hitters and have access to better medical care and better conditioning programs, etc, but that would be true for hitters, too. They would have film of opposing pitchers, etc. It's not like one side has a huge advantage over the other one. All things considered, Ruth would still be a superstar today.

That's not even the biggest difference in who could play the game. Consider what life was like back then and there were very large segments of the population that simply didn't have the ability to participate in sports. Today, pretty much anyone that has the athletic ability has the opportunity to play the game. Stadiums were much larger back then, and the ball was like a rock for a time. Ruth outhomered entire teams by himself. Has Barroid ever done that?

No. I agree with OMC. The best player in baseball history is far and away Babe Ruth. He "lost" 6 years of batting to being a pitcher. Had he been a hitter his whole career, Aaron would never have caught him. Ruth would be at or close to 800. Had he stayed a pitcher, he most likely would have won 300+ games and would be in the Hall of Fame either way. Babe Ruth was dominant at his peak at both hitting AND pitching. And he'd have made the Hall of Fame being either. No other player in history can say that. Not Bonds, not Mays, not Ted Williams, not even Cobb. Babe Ruth is the best baseball player who ever lived. There is no other peer.

i sure would hate to have that .272/.490/.551 line on my team Walking Barry is getting out of hand. It's more laziness now than anything. I bet he'd get pitched around if he just stood up there filing his nails and didn't even bother bringing a bat.

You are absolutely right - we need a guy like Borowski. He would come in and nail them down and he had us within a few outs of the WS in 2003 I don't blame the Cubs for giving up on him after his injury, but our loss is Cleveland's gain.

That was a painful game to be at today. When will Lou get the hint that Dempster sucks out loud in non-save situations? btw, I didn't hear why Z was taken out. Care to enlighten me?

I will be in attendance for the 12th time in my life. The Cubs are 6-5 in my previous 11 meetings (won the first five, lost the next five, then beat the Giants on a Burnitz walk-off single in '05). If they win it was because of me. -
Its really not that bad of an idea. I really don't care which arm the relievers throw with as long as they can get both lefties and righties out. Ding Ding Ding. I can't stand the LOOGY. Waste of a roster spot IMO. Just bring in guys who can get people out. Who cares what arm they throw with. But...but.... the PERCENTAGES!!

I'm always leery of "Player X has (these stats) career at Wrigley." It means he hits Cubs pitching well. It doesn't mean he'd mash if he came here. Jeff Blauser, anyone?
