  1. ESPN is reporting that the Padres are no longer pursuing a trade for Peavy and will move on to other endeavors this offseason. They'll still listen to trade offers, but they won't actively contact other teams to trade him. It's on SportsCenter.
  2. And people complain about Dunn's bad D. The Harry Caray statue would have better OF range than Barry Bonds would at this point.
  3. If we can't sign Peavy I wouldn't mind seeing Derrek Lowe sign here.
  4. This at least gives us backup if we do revisit the Peavy trade sometime down the road and part with Marshall.
  5. Now that Ibanez has signed in Philly, he's slated to be the everyday LF, forcing out Pat Burrell, who is also a FA. Would there be any interest in bringing Pat the Bat to Wrigley? His numbers remind me of a poor man's Adam Dunn (high power, low BA, high OBP). I don't know much about his D, though, but could he be any worse than Dunn? edit: I'm only advocating looking at him if for some reason we miss out on Bradley. Milton is still my first choice.
  6. Don't worry, guys. We can still get swept in the playoffs without him.
  7. At that point though Piazza wasn't going to push us over the edge. Peavy probably is that piece. That's where we disagree. For all the regression to the mean I expect from next year's Cubs, they are still the best team in the Central division. And if there is something inherent to this team that keeps them from winning in the playoffs, lack of a superstar starter isn't it. No, but it never hurts to upgrade, even a strength.
  8. Jim Hendry strikes again. I'll be so glad in June when it's clear Dempster has regressed, and Peavy is lights out in SD driving his trade value way out of our price range. That'll be awesome.
  9. Well, I hope we get used to seeing Randy Johnson past his prime on the mound next year. Yay!
  10. Has it been revealed yet why the deal died? Like I said... never believe anything about the Cubs until you actually see it with your own eyes. I didn't want to go back to work ticked off, but it looks like that's going to happen now. I wish this perpetual believer inside me would just die. My life would be easier.
  11. Farnsworth is the very definition of "Million Dollar Arm, Ten Cent Head."
  12. Go take a deep breath please. All I'm saying is that I'm willing to bet that by the time I go to bed tonight, Jake Peavy will not be a Cub. There's just too much information out there saying that a deal isn't close. Feel free to throw this post back in my face if I'm wrong. If it doesn't happen, blame CT.
  13. And I was really looking forward to getting a Cubs Peavy jersey-tee for Christmas. :(
  14. Don't know if it's been mentioned over night, but on a sportscenter on EPSN1000 this morning it said the Padres said the deal has to get done today. If that's the case, I'll put money on Peavy staying in SD.
  15. Don't be too confident. Has years of Cubs fandom taught you nothing? Never believe this team is going to do anything--- make the playoffs, acquire a player, win a game-- until it actually happens.
  16. If Hendry pulls off the Peavy deal, he can have one free night at any brothel in Vegas on me.
  17. I anticipate the bad kind. The "OMG LETS ALL GO KILL HENDRY OH GOD WHY AM I A CUBS FAN" hysteria. And I'll probably be right in the thick of it. I'm nothing if not self-aware.
  18. LOL I didn't even check the dates of the first posts. I opened the thread thinking "Why the hell are we after Chone Figgins now? What happened to Bradley and Ibanez and those guys?"
  19. Wow. I could see Putz or K-Rod, but not both. Surely the money/resources used to get one could have been used on about 3-4 very good bullpen arms. Regardless, the Mets bullpen won't be the laughingstock of baseball this year. I do think it's an overreaction, though.
  20. So much for the market being low this year because of the economy. This is craziness like the 2000 offseason when Manny and Hampton and all those other guys signed for obscene amounts. I hope the money comforts him over the next few years, because he won't even get a whiff of anything resembling a playoff race for a very long time in Washington.
  21. Go all the way to the bottom where a reader responded to the Blog...it's HOOPS.... Where's he been lately?
  22. I'm pretty sure they would have liked to not signed Kevin Brown or Carl Pavano knowing what they know now.
  23. A zero for anyone who thinks it's still funny to rate jokes. 1.3 you're both being generous And, with that, the current Peavy thread reaches 2500 posts.
  24. Any word on if Andre Dawson wants to sign here?
