  1. SIX Cub errors. Tied in the 9th after a 7 run comeback, but we're not to be denied. There's actual drama here. It's almost actually exciting. Dempster is the best thing that's happened to this race.
  2. No more Rich Hill. He's killing us. 14-3 in our last 17. Hill started all 3 games in the right-hand column. We can't keep running him out there if his heart isn't in it. The rest of the team is busting tail to pull it out, and Hill is thinking he's Amanda Wurlitzer.
  3. Cubs lose, Pittsburgh wins, Tampa winning, Kansas tied in the 10th.
  4. Ding, ding, ding. Exactly. We're not only talking big business, but we're talking about an ownership group that's never shown wisdom when it comes to their baseball team. Financial wisdom for themselves? Sure. For the team? Nah.
  5. Tonight it's Zach Duke vs Rich Hill in the battle of 4-letter names. Cubs need to show the same moxie they've exhibited recently to take advantage of these last two games with Pittsburgh. Last chance to not make up ground on them.
  6. I was at my parents for a couple days - come back and the Cubs have picked up all kinds of ground. I'm eliminating the Nationals from the list. They're right in the thick of things and then tank their way to a 5 game winning streak. Amateurs. And, WHY did we give up on Neifi?? He could be our ace base clogger, dude. We'd be the favorite if we could get him back. Pull a Dickie Noles & trade him for himself.
  7. The Royals hold on 7-5. They just don't want it bad enough. (bwahahaha at the ChiSox. :) )
  8. I've jinxed the Royals. It was 7-1. Now 7-4, ChiSox have the bases loaded in the top of the 8th. Drama!
  9. In a double-bonus scenario, the Royals are kicking the crap out of the ChiSox. Tampa won, too - disappointing display for them after that el foldo a couple nights ago. Washington rained out, Pittsburgh shows what happens when the Cubs leave town - they give one up to hold off the hard-charging Cubbies.
  10. Crazy how different the team is when you've got guys getting on base. Stupid base-cloggers!
  11. Thanks for the swing, Hillenbrandenhoffenschlinger.
  12. An embarassing display by Timmons. For some reason, it reminded me of the really small guys who buy really big trucks.
  13. I don't anticipate a blow-up. The NL looks very weak to me, and if a big market club like the Cubs brought in 2 or 3 good players, they could become post-season favorites in a blink of an eye. If Aramis were to leave, I could see Jim Hendry making a trade for Mike Lowell, a guy that he has liked in the past. Lowell is under contract for just 2007 at $9M, and the Red Sox will probably be looking to shed his salary this offseason, so that they can move Youkilis to 3B and focus dollars on better pitching. While Lowell doesn't replace Ramirez' production 100%, he would be a good 1 year stop gap if 2007 turned magical and it would buy Scott Moore some more time in the minors to determine if he's for real. I'd rather see a guy like Lowell than a Pedro Feliz or David Bell. Lowell has done a Todd Walker impression the last month or so (a few hits, a few walks, no power). He's hit for a nice average, and his OBP isn't terrible, but he could be an average to below-average run producer for the rest of his career. Probably a good character/bench guy, and wouldn't be a bad stop-gap if he cost $1M or so. He'll cost 10 times that unless we can get the Sox to split it. So, of course, I agree with you. Hendry will leap at him.
  14. It's hard to compete with excellence like that. Those guys have been here before and know how to get the job done. The last week has shown that we can find new and exciting ways to pull this puppy out. We had way too many guys clogging up the bases today, so we need to sit Theriot and keep his 5-hitting butt off the field.
  15. We did indeed. Washington is still close on our heels, but we're moving closer to the "leaders."
  16. I can't imagine he made it through waivers without some team making a claim. The Padres surely would have put in a claim, along with any other contender looking for a two-month rental at 3B. Yeah, I think you're right. Looking at the contenders, the only team I see with a real need at 3B is Philly, anyway.
  17. I think it's no better than 50/50 that he stays. I hope he'd at least wait to see what, if anything, Hendry can do to make the club better - but I wouldn't expect too much patience (or that Hendry can make the club better). Maybe a new manager will help entice him, but it's hard to see the Cubs stacking up well against other teams that will offer in terms of winning prospects. If he's cleared waivers, I wouldn't be upset to see him traded in the next two days. I think the chances he'll come back are low enough to where you have to at least see what you could get.
  18. That was so sad that I can't even joke about it. I'll need 10 minutes of deep breathing first. Pittsburgh & Tampa now tied (percentage-wise), Cubs 1.5 games back of them.
  19. http://www.latimes.com/sports/baseball/mlb/dodgers/la-sp-dodrep30aug30,1,2115844.story?coll=la-headlines-sports-mlb-dodger
  20. I wonder how this will play into the Carlos Lee chase I was hoping the Astros would get in on. (Mostly because I want someone other than the Cubs to overpay him.) I suppose Pettitte and Clemens being gone will free up some cash.
  21. I'm going to bogart your finely formatted standings for the first post. :) Pittsburgh just doesn't look like they want to win this thing. Allowing the Cubs to give the game over with errors and walks isn't going to win you squat. We may have underestimated just how serious the Cubs are about this race, however. That was inspired. It's a long-shot to catch KC (even if Mark Redman keeps throwing shutouts), but Pittsburgh and Tampa shouldn't feel too comfortable in their #2 & #3 spots. The Nationals quietly keep plugging along, as well. Three in a row for them.
