  1. The announcers were just saying that FSU deserves all the credit and it's not like ND is playing a bad game or anything, FSU is just executing so well. ND has 29 pts with 12 minutes left in the game. Sorry, but I don't think that can happen unless ND is playing a pretty bad game.
  2. I can't really think of another guy in camp that won't make the team that should definitively get the spot over him. He obviously hasn't developed into a dominant guy but I think he can still be a serviceable middle reliever.
  3. That seems like a bit of an overreaction.
  4. It really seems like Kansas should have put us away by now. Hopefully someone can get hot and make them pay for letting us hang around.
  5. Just let Carrie clear it all up for you: http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20110316&content_id=16977420&vkey=news_chc&c_id=chc# Clear enough for you? Wells and Cashner would probably be flipping burgers if not for the "major impact" Hill has had on them.
  6. And he'll probably still be sent back down so Koyie Hill can stay on the team. :-x After how much Hendry talked up Hill this offseason about all his mysterious intangible contributions there is no way he lets him go. The massive amount of Quade butt kissing Hill did probably won't hurt his chances either.
  7. Maybe he is mad about that fishing bobble head.
  8. Yeah, I don't see Silva reacting well to being put in the bullpen so I think all things considered they are better off shipping him somewhere else if he isn't going to make the rotation. Don't really care who they get for him, but if they eat some of the contract they should at least get a decent prospect.
  9. There is no way this is random. The committee must be setting up games with good story lines. I wouldn't be surprised if the networks are pushing this. With the amount of money they pay for the rights it isn't inconceivable that they have some influence. A nondescript Illinois team playing Lon Kruger and Bill Self isn't a story. At all. Edit: More than 50 miles outside of Champaign that is. Since Chicago is within 50 miles and is a major media market that makes it a story. Doesn't matter if no one in Sacramento cares, they wouldn't care if a nondescript Illinois team was playing George Mason or Butler either. And if Illinois gets past UNLV the Self vs Illinois story line will be even more significant for the Chicago media market.

  11. Simple lesson. Don't take Lunardi's word as the final word. Virginia Tech really is cursed. When they won that game on the overturned last second shot I thought that would put them in for sure.
  12. I like the fact that Barney is playing well enough that it should eliminate any need for the Cubs to consider keeping Ojeda on the 25 man roster as a utility infielder.
  13. I think they are in now, but still probably playing in Dayton in a few games. I'm starting to get worried even though everyone says michigan is in. Last year the conference tourny didn't mean squat. So of course this year it will and Michigan will get in at our expense. It is hard for me to convince myself that Illinois really deserves to make the tournament. Maybe their resume is better than some other teams but they are playing like a team right now that seems to better fit in the NIT. Assuming they do make it watching them lose in the first round to a more disciplined and better coached mid major team seems inevitable.
  14. It seems odd that people who don't appreciate Sabermetrics generally act as though pro-Sabermetric fans think that the statistics are perfect and don't take any enjoyment from actually watching the actual games when that couldn't be further from the truth. But I guess if the goal of writing the book is to sell a bunch of them and make money then the way they are marketing it definitely will appeal to that Sabermetric hating crowd so it is probably a good strategy. Personally I don't even understand the relevance of the whole bird thing since Sabermetrics never claims to accurately predict outcomes of specific at bats or games so one incident like this wouldn't do anything to affect the accuracy of the metric.
  15. Hamilton was 25 at the time. He was a #1 pick who had barely played in several years. He was just a random name that had promise a long time ago. Matt Bush has the same profile now and nobody's beating down the door of TB to get him. Keep in mind also that the only reason he was even available in the Rule 5 draft is that the Rays took him off their 40 man roster that offseason. They obviously knew his situation better than any other organization and had pretty much given up on him despite the tremendous amount of time, effort and money they had invested in him up to that point.
  16. I was going to say, that didn't sound right. Did she get the lyrics wrong?
  17. I don't think Ramirez has options. If he doesn't make the team he is probably gone. I wouldn't be surprised if the wind up keeping him around on the big league team if he shows he can play some corner infield in spring training. It is always nice to have an extra catcher on the roster and with Baker being able to play some outfield and first base they will have some flexibility.
  18. Yeah, it looks like he only went with an 11 man staff for the majors, with Z, Demp, Garza, Cashner, Silva, Grabow, Marshall, Marmol, Wood, Samardzija, and Wells. So yeah, another spot will be open for both the majors and for Cales too in Iowa almost definitely. If they keep 12 the additional pitcher could very well be Wellemeyer. The other lefty to take his spot would seem to be a healthy Grabow. With Grabow and Marshall they would have two lefties in the bullpen and don't really specifically need Russell just because he is left handed. All the talk of him getting a shot at the rotation in ST makes me wonder if they won't try him out as a starter in AAA if he doesn't make the big league team.
  19. Oh yes. He was one of my favorite pitchers for the longest time after that, even if he did suck. If they keep 7 bullpen guys he might have a shot as an end of the bullpen long reliever / spot starter with a good spring. Not great but probably not that worse than the Thomas Diamond's, etc that he would be competing with. I would rather he or someone similar get the job over the scenario of Cashner not getting the rotation spot and spending the season in this kind of role instead of being in the starting rotation at AAA.
  20. Thanks - looks fairly promising. I am impressed Hendry was able to get a prospect that good for a Lee rental. If you believe this ranking he got better return for Lee than he did for Gorzelanny or Lilly. Or is it possible these rankings were done before the Gorzelanny trade?
  21. What does everyone think of Robinson Lopez? I know we got him in the Lee trade but I haven't seen much on him anywhere else and was a little surprised to see him show up in this top 10.
  22. Clearly Epstein thought there was a problem as well or he wouldn't have traded Ramirez to get Bay who statistically is not as good.
  23. he was traded on the last day of july or first day of august or something. his numbers in july: .347/.473/.587/1.060 care to revisit your argument? No. He was refusing to pinch hit, insisting on a days off when the team needed him, etc. He most definitely was making life miserable for the team in an attempt to force their hand on the extension or trade.
  24. Yes, but then he decided to quit and force the Red Sox to trade him or give him an extension.
  25. That also isn't a completely fair statement because toward the end before he was traded there is no doubt that he was completely mailing it in even if his overall numbers were propped up by success earlier in the season. It is revisionist history to deny that his actions essentially forced the Red Sox to trade him. I do actually think that Manny is a better signing for the Rays than Damon. If he gets off to a really hot start, however, he might start thinking extension, etc and let it affect his attitude. He seems like a guy that needs to feel the love.
