Seriously? Career .276/.340/.447/.787, 112 OPS+ doesn't exactly scream baseball legend to me, even accounting for his position. I guess this brings about a discussion on whether longevity and/or accomplishments has an impact on the selection process.

Peter isn't that bad Not always, but not surprising this comment would come from him? You surprised?? Not really. I agree with the comment that MLB policy doesn't take precedent over any laws (at least, it shouldn't). Yes it's wrong IMHO and yes it's unethical IMHO. However, it is fair to point out whether or not something was against MLB rules. If a player was between the parameters of the rules at that time, we should be questioning MLB policy and MLB officials at that time for said parameters. Just my :twocents:

From the Cubs: CUBS INVITE 11 MORE TO BIG LEAGUE CAMP Tuesday, January 9, 2006 The Chicago Cubs today announced that 11 additional players have been invited to Big League camp with the club. Pitchers Sean Gallagher, Adam Harben, Ryan O’Malley, Carmen Pignatiello and Randy Wells will report to Fitch Park in Mesa, Ariz., in February, as will catcher Jake Fox, infielders Mike Kinkade, Casey McGehee and Eric Patterson and outfielders Tyler Colvin and Chris Walker. Gallagher, 21, split time between Single-A Daytona and Double-A West Tenn in 2006. The righty made 13 starts for Daytona, going 4-0 with a 2.30 ERA (20 ER/78.1 IP) while striking out 80 batters and only issuing 21 walks. He went 7-5 at West Tenn with an ERA of 2.71 (26 ER/86.1 IP) and struck out 91 batters in his third professional year. Gallagher has posted a 26-12 career record with a 2.65 ERA (103 ER/350.1 IP). Harben, 23, spent the 2006 season at the Double-A level in the Minnesota Twins’ organization, appearing in 29 games, 22 of which were starts. He compiled a 4-9 record with a 3.96 ERA (54 ER/122.2 IP) including one complete game and one save. The right-handed hurler has a career record of 32-28 over five seasons with a 3.40 ERA (194 ER/513.1 IP). O’Malley, 26, spent the majority of 2006 with Triple-A Iowa. The left-hander appeared in 26 games (19 starts), going 7-7 with a 4.08 ERA (56 ER/123.2 IP). O’Malley made his Major League debut a memorable one after he tossed 8.0 shutout innings in a 1-0 win August 16 at Houston. He made one more start for the Cubs, but left the game early and eventually landed on the disabled list August 23 with a strained left elbow. Pignatiello, 24, saw the majority of his 2006 season spent in Double-A West Tenn in his seventh year in the Cubs’ farm system. The southpaw made 38 appearances (one start) finishing with a 2.69 ERA (18 ER/ 60.1 IP) and a 3-1 record. He struck out 74 while issuing 19 walks. He also appeared in eight games for Triple-A Iowa, posting a 2.70 ERA (2 ER/6.2 IP). His combined 46 games were a career high. Wells, 24, started 2006 with Double-A West Tenn before ending the season with Triple-A Iowa. While with West Tenn, he appeared in 12 games, all of them starts, posting a modest ERA of 1.59 (11 ER/62.1 IP) with 54 strikeouts and a career-low .199 batting average against (45-for-226). Wells made 13 appearances (12 starts) for Iowa where he compiled a record of 5-5 with a 4.96 ERA (38 ER/69.0 IP). Fox, 24, split his 2006 season between Single-A Daytona and Double-A West Tenn in his fourth season in the Cubs’ farm system. The backstop was named to the Midseason Florida State League All-Star Game and batted .313 (78-for-249) with 16 home runs and 61 RBI in 66 games for Daytona before his promotion to West Tenn. The Cubs third round pick in the 2003 draft, Fox has a .284 batting average (349-for-1,228) in 345 games. Kinkade, 33, hit .328 (125-for-381) with four home runs and 50 RBI in 106 games for Triple-A Albuquerque in the Florida Marlins’ farms system in 2006. The .328 clip ranked third in the Pacific Coast League. The infielder has a .256 career batting average (110-for-429) in 222 Major League contests with the New York Mets (1998-2000), Baltimore (2000-2001) and the Los Angeles Dodgers (2002-2003). McGehee, 24, enters his fifth season in the Cubs’ organization after he was selected by Chicago in the 10th round of the 2003 draft. Last season, he set career-highs with 135 games played, 497 at-bats, 139 hits and 11 home runs for Triple-A Iowa. McGehee was a 2005 Midseason Southern League All-Star with Double-A West Tenn, going 1-for-5 with a home run and three RBI in the game. Patterson, 23, split last season between Double-A West Tenn and Triple-A Iowa and was named to the Midseason Southern League All-Star team. With West Tenn, his nine triples ranked third-most in the league while his 38 steals were second. Patterson joined the I-Cubs on August 19 and hit in 14 of his 17 games played at the Triple-A level. His 46 steals between the two clubs ranked second among Cubs’ minor leaguers. Colvin, 21, was the Cubs’ first selection (13th overall) in the 2006 draft after a standout career with Clemson University. With Single-A Boise last season, he led the Northwest League with six triples, was second with 53 RBI and was third with 50 runs and 128 total bases. The left-handed hitter batted .314 (38-for-121) in 30 July contests and finished the year with 11 home runs. Walker, 26, led the Cubs’ minor league system with 50 stolen bases for Double-A West Tenn while his .292 batting average (150-for-513) ranked eighth. His 50 steals and 11 triples led the Southern League and his 150 hits were second and set a club record. From April 29-May 12, he batted .426 (26-for-61) during a 14-game hitting streak. Walker was the Cubs’ sixth round pick in the 2002 draft. The Cubs have invited 16 players to Big League camp, and the team’s spring roster currently stands at 56 players (40 on the Major League roster in addition to the 16 non-roster invitees).
