  1. SORIANO IS NOT AN EXTREMELY STRONG OFFENSIVE PLAYER Are me and Nilo the only people that understand that last year was an anomaly? Quoting nonsense like 40-40-40 and RBI is bad enough, but the entire point is that he had a career year and he's very likely not going to do that again. On a tangential note, how does everyone think Soriano's approach is going to age? He doesn't have the most compact swing in the world, which could lead to big problems once he loses a tick of bat speed. the 40-40-40 thing is a little silly, but one could argue that 04-05 were the anomoly. OPS+ 2002 131 2003 128 2004 98 2005 110 2006 132 how can it be an anomoly if it happened three out of the past five years?
  2. Were not at $150m. We're more close to about $100mil so far. Where do you get $150m? Man, some of you guys are making things up just to be negative. I don't get it? soriano's 136 million + derosa's 13 million = 149 million. i think that's what kctigers was saying if not factually accurate, taking things to extremes to make a point. I don't like the contract, and I didn't like the DeRosa signing, but there are some who will complain to no end because the transactions they wanted didn't happen, regardless of how much better the transactions that do happen improve the team.
  3. I don't think so, but looking into it brought me across this guy http://www.baseball-reference.com/g/galanau01.shtml I had never heard of him, but what a solid hitter.
  4. See STL. I assume they will make the nec. moves as well. I see them putting Wainwright in the rotation along side Carpenter, Reyes, and probably Suppan (again) and some project. As well as maybe one more arm in the pen. They'll likely go with Duncan or another OF'er in LF. They will improve. Carpenter, Wainwright, and Reyes has the makings of a good rotation. Reyes was about as good as Marshall last year and nowhere near as good as Hill when all was said and done. Wainwright, tough to tell. high touted, but history of mechanical and arm problems. moving into the rotation will be interesting to watch. Carpenter? I'm still waiting for his surgically repaired arm to fall off after all these innings and curveballs.
  5. emphasis added. I love the arm chair quarterbacking of GMs. noboday has any idea whatsoever of what happens in these negotiations, yet people presume they know what probably could have happened.
  6. so everybody should give credit to this year's Louisville, WV and Rutgers teams this year, because boy do some of those other teams have some good young atheletes. where was the 'young with freshman QB' talk when you were puffing about Syracuse's win over Illinois? The difference is these teams are in the top 15. the Big East has 6 teams in the top 15? when you said what you did, you were defending the Big East because they are young and up and coming, which has nothing to do with how good the Big East is right now. the three teams the Big East has in the top 15 are there because they only have one loss. they only have one loss because the rest of the conference compeltely blows. I don't know why everyone on the board has to keep going through this. I'd ignore it if it weren't so damn pervasive, but you're omnipresent with your whining about no respect for the Big East. iirc, you started it before the season even began. people suggested earlier in the year a thread for ND only discussion. I suggest a thread for you to complain about the poor underrated Big East.
  7. one player does not a lineup make. World Series Champion's catchers in 2006 = .605 OPS if the overall lineup is terrible then that one player is signficant. might I suggest, first and second and center were also significant problems last year, and as for this year, after today, the overall lineup is not terrible.
  8. one player does not a lineup make. World Series Champion's catchers in 2006 = .605 OPS
  9. Sign Meche/Lilly. Trade Jones's contract. Sign Drew. I don't think it's that impossible. Who knows, the payroll maybe be bigger than the 115-120 that we've been hearing. if that's it the rotation is horrible at worst and very average at best, definately not a world series champion. bit of a short term memory there? let me remind you Carpenter Suppan Weaver Reyes
  10. Bruce Miles challenges your statement. paul sullivan challenges bruce miles "The Cubs plan to have Soriano play centerfield and bat lead-off, giving them three players who have hit 35 or more home runs in a season in their starting lineup. With Soriano in the fold, the Cubs will next turn towards acquiring a starting pitcher or two." so who is right btwn the two? sullivan is a crock of you know what. country? mmmmmmmmmmmmmm tub of fake butter open faced club sandwich.
  11. http://www.eqa.ch/ those bastards! those knitters are low, but I bet it's the crocheters that are behind this.
  12. Does brick burn? i'm going to buy a nuke The Department of Homeland Security will be visiting you soon now that they have a deal with Google. seriously, you should be more careful with things like that.
  13. Edit: Says he plans to bat Soriano lead-off. a certain Who song comes to mind.
  14. I don't think he knows that aspect any better than the other (conflicting) reports. What I've gathered from this thread: *It's roughly 5ishyears/$90ish Million guarenteed, with options for the last 2-3 years and a no trade clause covering just the first five years. No word, that I've seen, on how it's spread out. doesn't the having a NTC for the first five years make it a NTC for the duration of the contract since he would be 10-5 if those options are picked up.

  16. The one thing better than leading off a game with a HR is leading off the game will multiple runs. A guy who can get on base better and costs significantly less allowing you to invest elsewhere is better than the half dozen or so leadoff homers Sori will hit. Drew, Lugo>>>>>>Soriano, Izturis you know what's better than a leadoff HR? a two or three run homer in the second.
  17. no, please be wrong. soriano is a lot more valuable in center than right. who the hell cares? it's the same exact players. what does 'value at his position' mean in that case? do you just want the best sabr stats for purely aesthetic reasons? if Jock in center and Soriano in right is the best defense, that's the way it sould be. because if jones is traded is lessens the chance of jim acquiring a crappy hitting centerfielder (which there are plenty of) to play there. it's easier to find good production out of a corner outfield spot. if the outfield is guaranteed to be murton/jones/soriano this year, then i don't care. but for the future considerations i want soriano in center. I think your original reaction was a bit over the top if that was your thinking on the matter. and if all that is your problem, then just put him at second. plus, exactly 6 rightfielders had an OPS over 833 last year. the same exact number of centerfielders who had an OPS over 837 last year. i'd actually prefer soriano at 2nd, but i think derosa is there for the long haul. and was 2006 just a fluke down year for rf's? or is it more the norm? it's the norm of late and I've been standing on my head trying to say it for the past three years everytime someone says "you can't compete with that in your corner outfield spots." center, short, second and catchers are not all purely defensive players like they used to be. third and first are on par with left and right these days. the 'gotta get rightfield production out of right field' is very old school thinking IMO.
  18. I thought that injury looked like it was a little, uh.......strange. Looked like he had a sudden onset of the world's worst food poisoning, only it wasn't the stomach he was grabbing. I was fearing groin pull from the time it happened.
  19. clearly the 2006 NL Central was just as good as the AL Central last year. noone thinks so? well everyone thinks wins are a good way to measure the effectiveness of a pitcher.
  20. nowhere near to the extent they can go crazy on the Big East teams. the comparison is UConn and South Florida and Syracuse v. MSU, MN, and NW. Syracuse beat Illinois and UConn beat Indiana what's your point again? Kansas is clearly better than Rutgers. they beat Kansas State who beat Texas while some Big East team beat Kansas State. When did they join the Big 10? I showed what happend with 4 teams and actual games between the Big East and Big 10. Also, both games were in Big 10 land. I was making a point about the nth degrees of Kevin Bacon. who mentioned Ill and In...even though In is better than NW. it's also pretty unfair to not put that UConn/Indiana game into context.

  23. not only humorous, that's fantastic news

  25. he can be used as a chip, but I'd like to see either Pie or Soriano moved to right after Jock leaves.
