  1. Hi all. I don't post much, but interesting topic... I think the lines have blurred too much to make much of a distinction between "buying" or "earning/growing" a championship team. To wit, what would you say of the 04 Red Sox, who needed to bring in a hired gun in Schilling to get it done. Did they buy their championship, or just shrewdly find the final piece to the puzzle? Free agency has made pro sports just a little bit less fun for me. I suppose it's great for ratings that your team can go from worst-to-first over any given offseason, but I'll echo the sentiment that it doesn't seem as "sporting" to me. As a Chicago sports fan it was pretty exciting to watch as the Bears improved over the course of a couple years before winning a Super Bowl with mostly the same core group of guys. I mean, how long did that offensive line play together? (Covert, Bortz, Hilgenberg, Thayer, VanHorn - I can probably name 3 of the current OLine). Does that ever happen anymore? Ditto for the Bulls, though I'm not as big of an NBA fan. So, I'd rather see the Cubs win a World Series in a similar manner but like others have pointed out, something about begging & choosing comes to mind.
  2. 8 pages and no mention of Zambrano's emailing problems?
  3. I agree with this as a general rule, but the guy is so hot right now he just might put those out of the park as well.
  4. [quote name="badgercub Im not even talking about the rest of the season' date=' or his previous two games. Just last night by itself was just an awesome game to watch.[/quote] Ah. Yes, an amazing performance. He had one strikeout on (I think) Navarro that was just nasty. And I also give him bonus points for not keeping me up too late on a week night.
  5. Oh, I fully expect them to return as well. I guess I'm just getting sick of the overall reliance on them. First, with my own annually dashed hopes, and second, the crumbling of the team when they see that the saviors aren't at full strength and/or have lasting injury effects. I kind of wish they'd both have extended stays in Iowa until they can be fully counted on.
  6. I think probably not, unless Marshall and (later) Guzman just go nuts this year. But for all the talk about not counting on our chronically injured aces, a lot of the mindset seems to be, keep it close 'til Kerry and Mark return. So, what happens if they can't come back strong? Or if only one of them does? Most importantly, is this team prepared to win without them? Thoughts?
  7. Obviously 3 games does not a season make but... As happy as i am about what he's doing for the team in the absence of a true ace thus far, I'm even more happy for the guy himself. When the Cubs spit the bit towards the end of last season, getting Maddux to 15 wins was one of the few things worth rooting for. I hated to see that streak end, and really didn't think we'd see much more out of him. But when I allow myself to think big, a Cubs division title coinciding with a Maddux resurgence would just be poetic beauty.
  8. any idea what the actual figures are?
  9. obviously it didn't work out in the long run, and all of this is hindsight, but i was surprised the nomar deal didn't get a mention. at the time, hendry pulling off an 11th hour multi-team deal while the cubs were still very much competing with the cards... well, it worked out for boston anyway. coming on the heels of getting maddux back that offseason (another conspicuous non-mention), i think hendry could've run for mayor.
  10. i'm surprised they aren't using the sign to cover up the "knothole" during games.
