  1. If the first two fell apart I'd look to go outside the box...maybe ask the A's about Daric Barton...maybe inquire about 32 year old coming off injury Youk...something not involving any of those guys listed.
  2. ...he's the next manager? Amirite!?!
  3. Kyle said it. So basically what you're saying is that you want the payroll to go up significantly, but by that you mean the minor league payroll? Just like winning franchises draw it up. It makes no sense to have 50 million dollars come off the payroll after hiring a star PoBO and his former protege as his cuckold/GM and there's talk of rebuilding. If the Phillies can put up a 170 million dolllar payroll, then theres no reason the Cubs can't and won't get there. I think the Cubs are looking to make some noise.
  4. Do you mean September-Nov. early or 1 PM early? ^^ Good one.
  5. Especially if they make the investment and get Pujols.
  6. He could just be a massive human being. Those exist too. Fielder's conditioning has improved greatly as he's been in the Majors. It's not as simple as "wow do you see how big he is? He's FAT (sorry, "excessively overweight")." Fielder doesn't have fat guy/old player skills at the plate (he doesn't K enough, and he hits for good BA), which IMO is a huge deal for his future and how he ages. It even kind of speaks to the shape he keeps himself in, as logically someone as excessively overweight as him would see some kind of decline somewhere in season (BA might fall due to the bat being slow down due to being fatigued, K's might go up, something)...None of that shows up.
  7. Alot of money for alot of years. You assume he'll he dead weight in years 8-10. I believe that's kind of just made up. Plenty of truly great players lasted into their late 30s and even early 40s. You also assume that the contract would serve as a handcuff. Unless he shatters every bone in his body under his new contract I don't buy that. It's an assumption based on general concepts being applied to a talent that isn't general.
  8. I legitimately believe no one can convince me that it's a bad idea to sign the best bat in the game and a historically great player. THAT idea is asinine to me. To be an elite team we need elite players.
  9. Apparently we have to be ready to win next year since Pujols either won't be a Cub after that or won't be any good after 2012. I don't understand that either. I want heavy blunt objects around next time someone shits their pants over signing an over 30 player simply for being over 30. From what I understand the Cubs should only be signing/targeting young high end talent that they don't have to pay too much for. Go get em Theo!
  10. Something along the lines of losing, letting him give Russel/Lopez/Ortiz/etc more starts, and of course disciplining Castro and other young guys unfairly. QIAFI.1
  11. Yes, I know that a great deal of people here want to be as absolutely safe as possible. I think one of my things this offseason will be to show people that each and every single player and person alive carries risk with them, and that you REALLY will need to get over that to be good. Pujols is too old. Will Wilson hold up in his contract? Fielder is fat. CC is over 30 and a pitcher. Darvish is an unknown who'll get paid. David Wright had a down year. Carlos Beltran is in his late 30's and had a knee injury a couple years ago. Matt Kemp is tricking people into thinking he's a long term CF. And on and on...and of course, each of these guys will cost more than we want to pay.
  12. Why in the hell are the Cubs "not ready" to go after and sign Albert [expletive] Pujols? What are the special conditions that have to be met?
  13. I think we'd see more of his 2010 power if he played at Wrigley than the '09 or '11 power, which is what matters to me. I also think he'd hit closer to .300 than .250, which also matters to me. I trust he'll take his walks.
  14. I'd like to get in on the Darvish race. I know I should be terrified of Japanese players coming across, but Darvish is legitimately the most talented one to come to the States since Hideki Matsui, IMO.
  15. At least some of that is park and run environment influenced. 15M + young players would be worth it if the Cubs get a high end 3B post-Ramirez for a few years.
  16. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/wrighda03.shtml Besides last season what should I be worried about here? The '09 with 10 HRs? It also came with a .300+ BA and a .390 OBP, plus it's hard to believe he's a 10 HR guy in Wrigley anyway. I know Wright's had his issues, but except for last year 15 million really isn't a bad price for him. Even last year his Iso's were strong...
  17. Has LeMahieu been playing alot of 2B in the AFL?
  18. True. He was good enough to get a 500K bonus, but there's not enough info about him out there for me to put him in the top 10. Then again, I haven't made my list yet. Theo should magic touch this guy into the next Chipper Jones. Or possibly even more badass...a switch hitting Wade Boggs. I'm just going to throw out names of really good 3B. The DSL Cub I'm irrationally high on is CF Jeffrey Baez. I wish that guy switch hit.
  19. Isn't Oswalt one of those guys who actually didn't like the Cubs when he was with Houston? Not that that would stop me from wanting him to sign here, just that it probably stops him.
  20. The Mariners would never trade Ichiro anyway. Or I should say it'd take something drastic. Maybe a trade deadline type thing where he becomes the 2012 Kenny Lofton...
  21. Whoa sorry Semantics Sam. As a 29 year old David Wright is still in his athletic prime years, and therefore probably capable of throwing up a couple of really good seasons. He hasn't even really been all *that* bad the past couple of years, and in two of the past three years he's basically been a 4 WAR player. The Mets will be able to ask alot for him, and he won't come cheap. It'd be nice if he did.
  22. Pretty sure that's everyone's overall philosophy. In practice, it's not that easy and it isn't so cut and dry, just as declining with age isn't so cut and dry. Ichiro will be 39 years old when he hits FA, and could easily just retire. Do you really think he'd be getting some huge, franchise changing contract? Sabathia you're just plain wrong on. He'll decline, but despite how you might seem to imply in your posts it's very possible to do that gracefully. It's even happened before.
  23. They should ask for alot. They're giving up a still in his prime formerly high end player turned merely good to very good player. There's still upside in that, and that FO knows if they sell him they're selling a good player likely to do some damage for his new team.
  24. I for one would not be surprised if I found out that Theo Epstein was one of our lizard overlords and Jed Hoyer is his robot protector. http://themajors.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/elsa77438073.jpg http://www.blogcdn.com/www.aolnews.com/media/2009/10/jed-hoyer-150aj102209.jpg
