  1. I think every team kicked the tires on Gordon. He was a former #2 overall pick who in his only full season hit 35 doubles with a 109 OPS+. Most guys who're highly thought of draft picks or prospects would get interest anyway. Jeremy Hermida finds one or two every year it seems.
  2. What Tim said. Sizemore has the potential to be a coup, but I think alot of people might think just that.
  3. It's more than that. A 24 year old C prospect who can hit, and Castillo has a good swing and possibly even decent approach shown at the AAA level, has to be considered an asset. If he was in say the Red Sox system or Yankees system or even the new hot one, the Blue Jays, he'd be taken way more seriously. Though it really would help if he didn't have his strong bat season in the PCL... After all that, I'm very into the idea of trading Castillo for a big league talent. I think Clevenger is closer to what a backup "should be" anyway, and Castillo's bat might get more of a chance somewhere else.
  4. I'm not a fan of giving up Castillo for compensation either. That'd be overpaying. He might be in my top 10 Cubs prospects, because he's close to the big leagues and can hit. I do think he can hit too...only 24 too...completely understand why Callis named him. I'm starting to rethink on Rhee too...I think I'm sleeping on him lately with toonster's campaign, a few old scouting reports, and now this Callis thing. Alot of it is the old scouting reports...He was more touted when first signed than I remembered him to be...Sounds like the whole mid-90's fastball thing might be mostly legit and everything. I could see him being amongst next year's breakouts in the system now that I'm clued in.
  5. That'd be a promising rookie line from Jackson. Same for LeMahieu's .291/.319/.363/24 2B/57 RBI rookie line...I would not mind that at all if they let him play 2B. They're not as optimistic with the pitching.
  6. Pujols to both questions.
  7. If the Angels pursued and landed Wilson then I'd go right after one of Richards or Chatwood, preferably Chatwood. Same for the Blue Jays...go right after someone like Morrow, Drabek, or Cecil. For the Nats go after Detweiler. For the Marlins maybe Volstad. If Theo could pull off something like that...a talented young arm who hasn't broken out yet...well that's why Senor Ricketts hired him.
  8. The Red Sox were never going to be players in the SP FA anyway. They have Becket, Lester, Buchholz, Miller/Bowden/Wakefield/DiceK/Tazawa/Morales...for them they key is getting their guys healthy. They'll probably look to resign Bedard.
  9. I've watched the Yankees do this to pitchers for almost 20 years. OK back to relevant posts...
  10. I called Chen interesting a couple of weeks go but on second thought.....meh. Not without a high end pitcher first...the back end of the rotation will work itself out if they improve the front end.
  11. money be damned (unless not) That is what I was going for yes. No but legitimately that guy IMO is the best player from Japan since Hideki Matsui. He's got the height, the build, the youth, the stuff, less culture shock than usual as he's somewhat Americanized....
  12. You know what Japenese pitcher wouldnt have trouble with the American ball? 6'5" 220, long limbed Yu Darvish. I'm starting to turn to that guy, money be damned (unless it's just plain too much).
  13. While for the most part it's true. It's alot easier to make an impact when you're a fast guy who gets on base if there's someone to drive you in...I realize that baseball is an individual sport and all that, but a lineup has to have some kind of synergy in it. I find it hard to believe that having a Pujols or even a Fielder won't have a positive effect on the players in the lineup a hole...especially the young and impressionable ones who'll watch them work.
  14. I'm not a huge Flaherty fan. He's been older than his leagues and slow to pick them up the whole time...Vanderbilt's a cool school to find pitching, but I'm still a little iffy looking for offense there. Also, I'm still firmly in the camp that LeMahieu could handle 2B full time defensively and it's more about his bat. I also consider what you're saying here as even more reason to pursue elite FA talent. It'll make it alot easier for someone like Szcur to make an impact earlier or someone like LeMahieu to find his niche (IMO). To me it'd be cementing the foundation that is Castro, Geo, and the bullpen from the farm, and forces the issue on improving ASAP.
  15. Forgot about Vitters. Vitters is going to be the man soon enough, unless he isn't then disregard.
  16. It's not just UZR. He's just not fun to watch work. He's slow, doesn't throw well, doesn't really move all that well...
  17. It's not really a knock. It's just that really the Padres' farm system isn't anything special, but because we brought over their GM and minor league guy their system gets extra points now. They also went and did alot of what the Red Sox do and picked the fallers. Joe Ross was considered a tough sign, but also a more talented pitcher than his MLB pitching brother. Michael Kelly was one of the non-Bundy top tier HS arms in the draft also, and had a ton of fans. Hedges was arguably the best HS catcher in the draft...Props to them for getting it done, but it doesn't sound like an impossible task if the owner is willing to spend.
  18. This now makes it 2 people that I know for a fact has had this thought. Chris Carpenter seems to do be doing alright out there this Fall.
  19. Same here, because they can always go to "well we don't know where he's at after the injury" or something in that area pertaining to arm strength and the injury. I'd rather see him go all Matt Latos on their asses.
  20. 1 - I'm saying that they'll go with the franchise that commits to them over the amount of years they want for the amount of dollars they want, or in the vicinity of both. 2 - Pujols isn't going anywhere to play second fiddle. The Yankees aren't getting him to play Tex to LF. The Mets are even worse off than the Cubs right now. The Red Sox have Gonzalez. The Angels could compete, but I'm not too worried about them. The Blue Jays? Yea, OK. I also don't buy Fielder signing to be a DH right off the bat, so NY and Boston are out. There'll be competition for these guys, but given the Cubs' advantages (potential name brand, lots of money, one of the three actual cities in the country) I'm not too worried about coming up with a sales pitch. 3 - Not sure what the actual point of your last part is, but I'll name LeMahieu. There's others, but I'm a big LeMahieu fan.
  21. Carlos Quentin is one of the worst defensive players in the MLB IIRC. Plus there's some injury worry.
  22. That organization made a deal with THE DEVIL himself.
  23. The Cubs could deal with a fair amount. That's how trades for good players should work. While he's probably still part of the Baltimore core, their future is still years away and he could bring some nice pieces. I see him as a Pence/Garza type who can play with the big boys but isn't quite top tier right now, and he's got a couple of cost controlled years left. He'd cost a pretty penny, but if they bring in the elite bat before him he'll be worth it. Hell, they should do it anyway. Smoak probably isn't going anywhere, but oh man what a coup that would be...
