  1. phil jackson's teams are 10-0 in nba finals when he has better players than the other team.
  2. i think the hawks win tonight. if the flyers are going to lose the series, i hope it's tonight, because i'm at summer games for special olympics on friday night and i don't want to have to back out of my commitments because of a game seven (but i've already told the other coach that i'm out friday night if there's a game)
  3. were you actually trying to pick the worst team possible?
  4. and that he's dead.
  5. the red sox are doing what everyone else should be doing. spending in the draft is the most efficient use of funds in the long-range. if you can go over slot to grab five players at a million bucks and one of them turns out to be a good major league player, you've already gotten more than you paid for.
  6. the pirates are significantly better than a AAA team. nobody's farm team is as good as any major league team. he'll probably still do really well against teams that can "actually hit the ball" because he throws 100 mph, locates really well and has a great curveball and very good changeup. it might not be a stretch to say that he has the best pure stuff of any starting pitcher who's ever picked up a baseball.
  7. given the guys who are graduating, archer would be pushing top 5 on my list. i'm very high on him.
  8. alex rios has had a very unspectaculiar career, no? i guess you could call it that, but he has a WAR of 20.0 in his major league career and was very good from 2006-08 and then has been very good this year. but more importantly, he has been better than 45 of the 51 players drafted in the first round and supplemental first round in 1999, even though he received one of the lowest bonuses and the pick was widely panned. if you are picking at #19 overall and you end up with alex rios, you did very well.
  9. the tv gun was crap; he touched 100 a few times and that was it. he didn't hit 103. that being said, he's really awesome.
  10. i guess 0-12 wasn't enough evidence that he should stop shooting.
  11. i guess ray allen decided to even out last game by not being able to throw a rock into the ocean this game.
  12. this thread should be titled WILL you watch the world cup AFTER the u.s. loses?
  13. i was driving today in my parents' car and popped in their steve goodman CD. "a dying cub fan's last request" still makes me laugh because it was written 30 years ago and pretty much everything still applies... the cubs still suck.
  14. part of the problem, which magnifies the bullpen issues, is that the offense is frequently inept and the bullpen keeps pitching in close low-scoring games. they've scored 2 runs or fewer in 23 of 58 games, or nearly 40%. that's atrocious.
  15. so there can't be critical discussion in a thread? a poster says to keep lou piniella; i think other posters should be able to provide arguments that the cubs should not keep lou piniella. if you want this to be a cheerleading thread about lou then you're probably going to be the only one posting in this topic.
  16. i remember alex rios was a guy who people thought was an absolutely terrible pick. the jays selected him 19th overall and then signed him for way below slot, and got ripped pretty soundly for that. granted he's not a superstar, but he's turned out to be a better player than all but five of the top 50 picks, and four of those guys (josh hamilton, josh beckett, barry zito, ben sheets) went ahead of him in the top 10. don't know if this was a good move or not, but wilken's off-the-wall picks have frequently turned out a lot better than people expected.
  17. Lol, new here much? If it's not for Sulley I'd be King of the Whiners. i think you should replace the erik quote in your sig with this
  18. you guys better hope i keep doing well... i'm the only one preventing two cardinal fans from being in the lead.
  19. okay thanks, i wasn't aware of that rule. i'm sure the ref lost sight of the puck when niemi tried to cover it so it would make sense that he wouldn't have thought it was live when carter poked it in. that goal judge seemed a bit quick on the trigger finger.
  20. just a question because the announcers never mentioned it - was there ever a whistle on that play? because clearly the puck didn't cross the line originally, but niemi also never covered the puck cleanly and carter poked it in. if there was no whistle, shouldn't that have been ruled a good goal? obviously it doesn't matter, i'm just curious.
  21. at this point i'll just take not getting swept. it's funny, i feel ok about how we've played the first two games - too many defensive breakdowns in game one and the hawks finished their chances remarkably well (plus leighton sucks), and then tonight we had easily more scoring chances but leighton let up a joke goal and niemi was terrific. much like the sharks we're showing that we're not far behind the hawks, but we're going to lose the series by a pretty lopsided margin.
  22. wasn't carlos henry down there last year? i loved that guy, he apparently got a pretty good bonus and then hit .150 with about 70 errors.
  23. He hit cleanup yesterday. and that was just as stupid.
