    well the d-cubs were kind enough to get around to vogelbach and bryant... vogelbach walked to load the bases and i have no idea what happened with bryant because it hasn't updated. jeimer has walked twice tonight, and 13 times in 15 games this month. edit - bryant flied out to end the game.

    it's going to be annoying when pin-chieh chen and wes darvill get another at bat for daytona in the 9th inning, and vogelbach/bryant don't.

    grimm was very good for iowa: 7 ip, 4 h, 3 r, 0 bb, 8 k. nice to see the lack of walks. his walk rate had been up pretty sharply from where it was last year in the minors. wouldn't be surprised if he's doubting his stuff and nibbling too much, given the beating he took in the majors with texas.

    syndergaard's last 4 starts at AA: 21 ip, 8 h, 1 r, 2 bb, 26 k. in 10 starts he has a 1.59 era, and 64 k/10 bb in 51 innings.

    today is kind of a buzz kill after yesterday. castro is an idiot, cubs got shut out for the 90th time at home, baez has struck out twice, pineyro got smacked around.

    sean burroughs is playing third for the team that tennessee's facing. he has a .620 ops and a slugging percentage under .300.

    there should be a thread for dumb baseball opinions we held as kids i used to tell everyone that shawon dunston was just as good, if not better, than ozzie smith I had complete reverence for Leon Durham, and hated Mark Grace for years for taking Durham's job. 13-year-old-me thought that Rick Wilkins was a god. well, he was for that one season when the ghost of roy campanella possessed his body.

    sandberg was in the discussion for best player in the game in the late '80s/early '90s. bonds was the best, but sandberg was probably in the next tier with rickey henderson, cal ripken, wade boggs, roger clemens, etc.

    I don't think Sanchez is a fair comparison. He didn't have Bryant's pedigree - BA rated him the 32nd best prospect in their final draft ratings. At least pre-draft, Clement might be a fair comparison (Aubrey and Beckham never were thought of as highly as Bryant has been for the past 8 months). i'm trying to think of elite college bats who completely busted. there sure as hell weren't many. antone williamson (brewers, like 20 years ago) was a top 5 pick who flopped. more often, someone with bryant's pedigree who ends up disappointing turns into something like alex gordon, where they are solid regulars who make an all star game or two, but don't end up among the elite players in the game.

    the best case scenario is for castro to go back to being good at baseball and baez destroying mlb at 3b.

    They are going to break him. doesn't pretty much every japanese pitcher go through this? not saying it's defensible, but they don't all break down because of prep abuse.

    He's gotta be a top five guy. He's taking walks now, has huge power, and plays short. Buxton, Bogaerts, Correa, Tavares will all be ranked higher. Bradley, Lindor, and Sano are possible as well. i don't know that correa will be ranked higher.

    In mid-July when the sell-off started, we were down about 7 wins against average on bullpen net WPA, and we were 10-12 out of a playoff spot. The only weird thing is thinking that piling up prospects is better than having a shot to make the playoffs and win the World Series. yeah because being 5 games out of the playoffs in late july with a roster that is pretty clearly inferior to the other national league contenders just screams "go for it!"

    of all things, griping that a better bullpen could have put the cubs within shouting distance of the playoffs is really weird. the cubs added young or young-ish players who are already benefiting the big club, and others who may arrive in the next year or two. the time is soon coming where the cubs aren't going to be able to sell off players like garza and feldman and hairston because they're a realistic chance to win a world series. what's the point of dumping prospects when you might have like a 10 percent chance of squeaking into a one-game playoff, and if you make it through that, then you hopefully can beat three superior teams and win a championship. good luck with all of that. i'm sure the giants are super thrilled about giving up six cost controlled zack wheeler seasons in exchange for two months of carlos beltran and missing the playoffs by 4 games.

    YOU'RE SO RIGHT. I'd also feel so much better about theo world serious champion Epstein if this 70 win cubs team had a competent bullpen for no reason If this team had an average bullpen, we would have been buyers at the deadline. we're 17 games out of a playoff spot. how many wins do you think our bullpen has cost us? and frankly i'm glad that the cubs' bullpen blew this year, because i'd rather have the cubs sell off and grab assets like edwards, olt, arrieta, strop, pineyro, etc etc than go balls out and dump prospects in an ill-advised attempt to overtake three teams (pitt, stl, cincy) which are clearly more talented than the cubs' first-half roster.
