  1. Why's he a quack? Because everyone in Major League Baseball says he is? I don't agree with some of what he does - specifically, being as secretive as he is about his training regimen. But the guy has a PhD, pitched frequently and effectively during a very good MLB career, and claims to have a whole lot of pitchers under his wing who stay healthy. And it's accurate that the "doesn't produce big-league pitchers" label is a self-fulfilling prophesy - kids hear it so they don't go to work with him, and he ends up working with kids who have marginal talent and are very unlikely to make the majors, regardless of what they try. I tell you what, though. If there's a guy who has had more than 100 students under his tutelage and not one serious injury, I'd probably at least listen to what he had to say. I'd probably pay a small fee to have someone sit in on his lessons and monitor the progress of his pitchers. After all, the "conventional" baseball thinking is that there are going to be major arm injuries to pitchers, and there's going to be a pretty high level of attrition. Why not try to change that?
  2. Good point. Yet I guarantee that anyone on this board would find some financial stress from making $30K per year - even if you make less than that. But the average person in India makes less than US$1,000 per year, and he'd probably think it's crazy that you're worrying about finances when you make 30 times what he makes.
  3. Get back in the lineup, Podsednik. And Wandy Rodriguez, please remember that you're Wandy Rodriguez.
  4. we need hoopscubs back. This season's "trade proposals" by NSBB members consist of "here's a bunch of trash we don't want, let's foist it all on a team who will subsequently give us one of their best players"
  5. $5M is enough to last a lifetime if you're planning on living like you and me, but Carlos is probably planning on living in a much bigger house, and supporting his extended family too. There is stress involved when you're working toward a new contract, no matter what line of work you're in.
  6. in most baseball player cases, it's probably roid rage
  7. First things first... are you peeing your pants if the Brewers make the playoffs? Mmmm... no. okay, so it's safe to say you're not a real fan.
  8. In Arkansas, jorts and a sleeveless shirt are a status symbol.
  9. wow, this vote is lopsided
  10. (a) One is a huge number when you're talking about something that only happens about 3.3 times per 9 innings. (b) The pitching staff is already better than the league average in walks per 9 innings.
  11. has anyone seen this guy pitch? I mean, he must be missing the strike zone by miles, right? I can't imagine it's fun to step into the box against him unless you're wearing full armor.
  12. I will too, and it probably won't be on purpose.

  14. Holy crap, am I glad the Cubs didn't take a stab at the kid with a 100 mph, a knee-locking curve ball, and absolutely no idea where either one is going. Here are his minor-league stats since signing with the D'backs: 1-4, 17.18 ERA, 36.2 IP, 35 H, 2 HR, 103 BB, 46 K, 54 WP If that's not the worst pitching line I've ever seen, it's gotta be pretty damn close. I understand the excitement about the rare arm and everything, but really, after 3 years of having no clue how to throw strikes at Georgia Tech, would you really feel good spending a 3rd round pick and $500,000 on him? This isn't Rich Hill, struggles-some-because-he-walks-too-many bad (from the minor leagues), this is can't-even-pitch-in-a-competitive-ballgame bad. Yikes.
  15. <----- psyched about his 4/27 BB/K ratio in 29 games played!
  16. Bump... he had a solid start today! Only 6 ER in 5 IP to bring his ERA down under 15!!!
  17. jones is exactly the type of player the A's don't want. doesn't take pitches. terrible defender (though they've had less of a problem with this part in the OF lately). That's not true. There's a certain player that the A's don't want. It's called the overvalued player. Jones skillset may not be the greatest, but for what he does he may be below market value, which is exactly the kind of player they want. I'm sure they'd prefer Murton to Jones, but I'm sure they'd pick up Jones if the Cubs would help pick up the tab. Thank you. Of course you could write this 1000 times and people would still believe that the A's would never want a free-swinging player.
  18. I responded to the post as you wrote it. I never asked to run him off. I'd like him traded if they can get value, but I called from the start of spring to have him in CF. Prior to that I wanted him in a platoon in a corner spot. One way or another, he can't play as frequently as he does. well at least we agree on that. I wasn't thrilled about the signing, but I think he's a decent value provided that the Cubs play someone else (even Pagan) in CF against LHP. I don't disagree that they should try to get value for him in a trade, but I would like to see Pie in the minors for a while longer, because right now he just doesn't hae the discipline to be an adequate major league hitter.
  19. halfway decent really? Because last year he ranked 16th out of 84 in OPS among outfielders with 300 or more PA against RHP. Just ahead of Soriano, Vladmir Guerrero, Cuddyer, Dunn, and (believe it or not) Matt Murton. But yeah you're right, it's only "halfway decent." Last year was also the 2nd best number on your list. It's a little foolish to list 6 data points and only focus on one of them to describe the whole thing. Furthermore, since his OPS is SLG weighted, and OBP weak, his actual production isn't as good as the OPS suggests. But that's a different story. I see 2 bad years, 2 good years, and 2 okay years. But then again, it's only his numbers vs RHP. If you have a guy whose making $5m as a platoon player, he should be considerably better than what you are showing against the pitchers he supposedly hits well against. check the post again, and also you may want to take a look at what other people around MLB are making. And since the Cubs have already signed him, I don't see the point in running him off this team unless there's a better option available.
  20. halfway decent really? Because last year he ranked 16th out of 84 in OPS among outfielders with 300 or more PA against RHP. Just ahead of Soriano, Vladmir Guerrero, Cuddyer, Dunn, and (believe it or not) Matt Murton. But yeah you're right, it's only "halfway decent." 2005: 33rd out of 82 2004: 59th out of 83 2003: 38th out of 79 2002: 11th out of 76
  21. Jock against RHP: 2002: 333/372/580/952 2003: 317/342/492/834 2004: 258/310/465/775 2005: 268/348/466/814 2006: 303/358/528/886 2007: 284/352/379/731
  22. let's also trade for someone who can lay off a first pitch can catch a ball in rightfield
  23. so you make excuses for Murton no matter what, but when Jones plays poorly against pitchers he has no business playing against - because he's always, always, ALWAYS been unable to hit LHP - you say he should never play again. Makes a bunch of sense.
  24. Just tipped his hat to the bleacher fans. No big deal really. I'm sure they've been giving him hell all day. no, peg him in the face
