    Dal, Hope you had a nice weekend. My perception is that while Hendry is trying to figure out if he's a buyer or seller for 2005, he is also trying to figure out who's on the staff next year. And I think the three players front and center on his mind are Glendon Rusch, Jerome Williams and Sergio Mitre. What do you do with them? They each have some value on the trade market. To me, I think he envisions the rotation next season to be Wood, Prior, Zambrano, Maddux and Hill. Substitute Angel Guzman or Nolasco for Maddux in 2007. He'll probably need to keep one of Rusch, Williams and Mitre to backfill in the event of injury. But I think two are definitely trade-able. I think there are plenty of teams who could use Rusch or Williams in the stretch as a #4, #5 guy. If they are not in the plans for 2006, I hope Hendry trades them by July 31.

    Really? even now? I mean, I remember right before we got Aram, some of us were excited about possibly getting mike lowell. But I would think that his stock is somewhere around that of a new baseball bat right now. I just hoped over to the dodgers website. It looks like they are sharing the time at the hot corner between four guys, none of which are hitting below .285. Do they think he is a change of scenery case? He has too much talent to be this bad. He will never be the premier 3rd baseman in the NL, but he can be good enough to be top 5 or 6. Hoops

Do you think boston would be willing to do that? Their angle might be: pick up some of Lowell's cash and flip him to a 3rd team for a prospect - Dodgers have always wanted Lowell.

    Let the Adam Dunn talk continue! It's probably the most popular subject right now, and many Cub fans are just lusting to see him in Cubbie blue. I see a lot of good reasons to get him, although, I'm nervous about the price we'd pay. So, let's consider other players too. I'm not as high on Aubrey Huff as many of you are. I think he's too streaky, and plays horrible D. I suggested Rondell White, but many rightfully felt that he wouldn't be much of an improvement over Hollandsworth plus he'd be a rental, which we know Hendry is trying to avoid. The guy I was championing early and still feel is the right fit is Cliff Floyd. I was convinced we were going to trade Sammy for him, but I was wrong there. I even thought there might be a shot at getting him earlier in the year (especially when the Mets visited town), but the timing was unrealistic. But how about now? The Mets are not shopping him, but I'm sure he'd be available. Floyd is under contract in 2006 for $6.5M, which seems pretty reasonable for his production. He bats lefty, of course, which is always nice to insert between D-Lee and Rammy. Could he be the answer Hendry is seeking by July 31? Depending on where the Mets are in 2 weeks, might it be feasible to see Floyd and Looper packaged in a deal? Hoops

    I like him, but I've never seen him as an everyday player - I don't know if that's because of constant injuries or how the Pirates tend to use him. He's one of many arbitration eligible players the Pirates need to make a decision on. He'll be a free agent after the 2006 season. He's earning $3M this season as a 5th year of service player, so he could be in line to earn as much as $5M in 2006. That's a little too much to pay him in my opinion. Decent idea, but I would aim higher.

    I can't say how realistic it is that he'll be dealt to the Cubs because I just don't know. I can say that the Cubs are very interested, and that the Reds do acknowledge that trading Dunn is their best option for bringing back a boatload of young pitching talent with high potential. I still feel that if the LA Dodgers gave the Reds some of their AA players, the Reds would be most inclined to trade Dunn there.

    There are currently 24 regular OFs in the majors that have an OPS of .850 or above (none are Cubs, of course). - There are 3 known free agents at the end of 2005: Reggie Sanders, Brian Giles and Johnny Damon. And a fourth, Hideki Matsui, is not under contract beyond 2005, but I forget if he's considered a free agent, or if he's arbitration eligible. - There are 4 players, who have deals that their teams would arguably love to dump if they could under the right circumstance: Manny Ramirez, Ken Griffey, Jr., Andruw Jones and Pat Burrell. - There are 8 players, whose teams I think would trade them if the right deal came along: David Dellucci, Adam Dunn, Gary Sheffield, Moises Alou, Cliff Floyd, Trot Nixon, Jermaine Dye and Carlos Lee. - There are 8 players, who I see as being "untouchable" because of what they mean to the franchise, and/or because they are still fairly cheap: Vladimir Guerrero, Miguel Cabrera, Bobby Abreu, Jim Edmonds, JD Drew, Jason Bay, Kevin Mench and Jose Guillen. Feedback?

    It doesn't make up for his blatant cheerleading during the '03 NLCS, but it's pretty satisfying seeing his career (hopefully) end on such an embarrassing note at the hands of the Cubs. I'm sure he'll sign with somebody for the duration of the year. Maybe the Yankees, Red Sox, Giants or Padres will take a flier on him.

    We think Hendry is in the market for a middle-of-the-order outfield bat and a relief pitcher or two. Hendry has made it clear, or better stated, the beat writers have said that Hendry has made it clear that he isn't going to trade for a 2 month rental. The guys he trades for have to help this year as well as next. With Huff under contract in 2006 and Baez with a 2006 team option (and arbitration eligible), Larry's scenario makes perfect sense to balance the short term needs with having useful players for 2006. Now, will TB coooperate? They never do, do they? I continue to hear Mike MacDougal's name.

    If Dunn is traded within the division and it not to the Cubs, Hendry better skip the convention next January. If the Cardinals or Astros get Dunn I'm not watching another Cubs' game this year. Personally, I think it will be LA. They have lots of money and an excellent farm system, especially their AA team. If all the deals are equal, why not trade outside the division?

    Bruce Levine was on Mike and Mike this morning on ESPN Radio (8:30 AM CDT). He thinks there are 4 NL teams vying to convince the Reds to trade Adam Dunn - he mentioned each team can provide the pitching and prospects the Reds need. He mentioned 2 of the teams are the Astros and CUBS. The other 2 teams were not mentioned, but I suspect are the Dodgers and Braves. In Bruce's mind, the team that gets Dunn will be the NL wild card winner when all is said and done. Just one other point Bruce mentioned for the White Sox fans here: he thinks the Sox will aggressively pursue Joe Randa to be their 3B for the stretch. Getting Randa and another starter (AJ Burnett, Ted Lilly, Kip Wells, etc... will cement the division title. Enjoy! Hoops

    P.S. The other thing the papers down there made very clear: the Marlins were very embarrassed about being man-handled by our Cubs. McKeon was even quoted to say that a sleeping giant may have been awoken. The Pirates series is huge for psyche - players, team and ours.

    They're not happy with Contreras and El Duque. The consensus seems to be that the Sox feel they have enough offense to win.

    Sounds like Washington will keep Church. They are moving him to LF, so Wilson can play CF. Wilkerson is moving to 1B for the injured Nick Johnson - his heel injury sounds very serious - that could be a big blow to them.

    I just got back from a business trip in the Miami area. The Sun Sentinel and Miami Herald (and sports talk radio) are convinced that the Marlins will trade AJ Burnett before the deadline - even though they're in the race, they know Burnett won't sign with them, so they prefer to get something for him before he walks. The main suitors seem to be the White Sox, Orioles, Blue Jays, Dodgers, Padres and Angels. The Jays and Sox seem to be the most aggressive, although I haven't heard names for CWS. The Jays would deal Gustavo Chacin if Burnett would sign an extension. The O's would part with Julio, Bigbie and a pitching prospect if Burnett signed an extension. Watch this one closely. The Astros are shopping for a bat; the Red Sox are shopping for bullpen help. Kevin Millar is very unhappy in Boston; Chad Qualls is reportedly unhappy in Houston. These two have been linked in a deal by Newsday. Hoops

    I heard on Sporting News Radio on the way into work tonight that Byrnes is going to Colorado in exchange for Joe Kennedy and a prospect. It is Kenny Rosenthal, so take it for what it's worth, it was also announced in the update that the Preston Wilson deal to Washington was done with Wilson and cash going to Washington, and Zach Day and a minor leaguer or two to Colorado Peter Gammons is reporting that the A's might trade Payton to the Yankees.

    Do you play Teixeira in the OF? I've heard from some here that he is not very good defensively in the OF, and runs the risk of getting injured if he's not playing 1B. He's athletic enough to play the OF. He wouldn't be any worse than Alou was out there, so yes I'd play him in left. Fair enough. Tex has a great bat. Speaking of Alou, if you get a moment please read Mike Downey's column in the Chicago Tribune and Tim Sassone's article in the Daily Herald. Alou and the Cubs clearly miss each other. Do any of your sources indicate a reunion near the deadline? The only hold-up I see is that tricky option for 2006. I would say less than 1% chance of a reunion. Moises has a full no trade clause, is quite upset at Hendry for not even following up with him in the offseason to see what it might take to bring him back, is now very happy playing for his father, and still believes the Giants have a shot in the 2nd half in the weak NL West.
