  1. Believe it or not, I don't think Griffey would clear waivers. With both Bernie Williams and Kevin Brown coming off the payroll after this season, I think the Yankees would claim him. And Cincinnati would pull him back because as much as the financial relief is tempting, their fans would be pissed if Griffey left for nothing.
  2. You're kidding, right? You're upset that the Cubs traded Jody Gerut and took on about $1.3M in payroll to get a guy who has a .380 OBP this season, and a .431 OBP in July? We've been talking about OBP all year, and now we got a guy who excels in that role, so we're still complaining? Come on now. Hendry decided Rich Hill and Felix Pie were too valuable to trade - I can't argue with that. It would have been those guys and maybe 1 or 2 other players for Dunn or Soriano. Too steep. Let's be honest - no one guy was available, who could put us over the top per se. It's going to take a collection of improvement to make it happen. I love this deal. Hendry stole him.
  3. And you're probably right. But we should continue to think outside the box, and maybe, just maybe, someone will notice.
  4. It's really a terrific move considering he only gave up Jody Gerut (who really had no chance of being prominent in the Cubs OF). I almost think Hendry would have traded Dubois for Lawton earlier in the month, but figured he didn't want to see Jason in the NL, so he took an interim step. By the way, I don't know if it was brought up in the Lawton for Gerut thread, but Lawton's OBP in July was .431. Compare that with Hairston's .304, and it's hard not to see this deal as an indictment of Jerry's lead-off capabilities.
  5. He stays. Here's my 25 man roster: Lineup: (1) Lawton - LF (2) Walker - 2B (3) Lee - 1B (4) Ramirez - 3B (5) Burnitz - CF (6) Garciaparra - SS (7) Barrett - C (8) Murton - RF Starters: (9) Prior (10) Zambrano (11) Maddux (12) Hill (13) Williams Relief: (14) Dempster (15) Wood (16) Williamson (17) Rusch (18) Ohman (19) Novoa Bench: (20) Blanco (21) Hollandsworth (22) Hairston (23) McClain (24) Fontenot (25) Perez
  6. By the way, of the 5 subtractions, 4 clearly because of performance issues. Lone exception: Ronnie Cedeno - no real knock on him, but he will get zero at bats with Nomar and Neifi around, so best to see him back in AAA.
  7. I see Hendry taking more control of the roster now that it is crunch time. I haven't figured out, though, if Macias is Dusty's boy or Hendry's boy. At any rate, here are the moves I'd make by next weekend: Subtractions: Mitre optioned, Wuertz optioned, Remlinger DFAd, Cedeno optioned, Macias DFAd. Additions: Wood activated, Williamson activated, Garciaparra activated, Fontenot called up, McClain called up.
  8. This would be a great opportunity to reduce the pitchers to 11. I say, when the Cubs activate Wood, Williamson and Nomar, they should send down Mitre and Wuertz, and DFA Mike Remlinger.
  9. Any chance we could see one of these 2 guys brought to the big leagues in the next 10 days just in case Jose Macias gets DFAd? They can both play 3B - after all, that is the only useful purpose Macias serves, right? Hoops
  10. You almost get the sense that if LA were to fire Tracy, and were to offer Baker the job, that Jim Hendry would gladly let him out of the final year, and would name Atlanta 3rd base coach Fredi Gonzalez the new skipper of the Cubs.
  11. We'll worry about next year in 2006. Right now, the Astros are beginning to pull away from the Cubs too. 4 up. This is just like the Cards did to us in May. Somehow, someway, our boys need to right ship. We've lost 2 of 3 to Arizona, while the Astros have blanked the Mets.
  12. Me? Come on. Mr. Bruce Miles is definitely the right answer.
  13. You because you're "in the know."
  14. Don't rule out the possibility that he may acquire a starter. Hendry may wake up this morning thinking that having Jerome Williams and Rich Hill as 4 and 5 may not be best suited for the wild card chase. I still see a guy like Kevin Millwood or Jamie Moyer lurking... Good point Hoops. With all focus ....or most of it, of the draft being on pitchers in the past I'd hate to see that happen. I do understand why but I always thought that the minors would be able to fill that void and the reason to stockpile arms in the minors was to fill the everyday postion holes that come up, not to trade for a starting pitcher. Look, I still believe acquiring a slugging outfielder and another relief pitcher is the right way to go. But we have to be open to the possibility that with Wood out, Williams only being a 5 inning guy and Hill having only started once, that Hendry may view the rotation as the biggest short term hole.

  16. Is it just me, or does anyone else have the feeling that when early September rolls around, Houston might just pass St. Louis for the division lead and title? That would set up a potential Cubs-Cards battle for the Wild Card. How about that for the ultimate in irony? Have a great weekend. Hoops
  17. I could be wrong (wouldn't be the first time, even today!), but I think Burnitz has a pretty significant option in his contract next year that would likely prevent him from being back anyway. Cubs hold a $7M option on Burnitz in 2006. I would say it's less than 2% probability that they exercise it. But, as you know, OF is very slim on the free agent list, so I wouldn't be shocked if they brought Burny back in Jan/Feb timeframe for $3-4M.
  18. Have to be a buyer. We're 3 behind Houston and we play them 10 more times. You have to at least address OPS in LF and/or bullpen help - if not for 2005, then for 2006. Got to buy regardless if Nomar and Williamson are back or not.
  19. Muddy away! What if the understanding is that he plays 2B next year? Is it necessarily a given that Walker will be back?
  20. It sure sounds like it's a possibility that Soriano could be coming here. I doubt very much that Wood is part of the deal. I also doubt that Hendry would put Pie or Hill in this deal. But, Mitre, Rusch, Wellemeyer, Patterson, Murton, Gerut, etc... could be part of the package. I am concerned about putting Soriano in the OF - everytime it's been suggested to him, he pouts. Having the right attitude about doing something is sometimes 50% of the battle in any endeavor in life or baseball. He clearly wants to play 2B. Last time I looked we had a 2B. I would trade Walker in this deal, if the Rangers gave us Dellucci as well. Now, my angle is that I think Hendry is bluffing on Soriano. He clearly understands that the Twins, Mets, Yankees and Red Sox are interested in Soriano, so he figures if he can get Soriano, then he can pick up something he really wants from those other teams: JC Romero, Tom Gordon, Cliff Floyd, Mike Cameron, etc... It promises to be a fun 72 hours despite the slow start and general muted activity! Hoops
  21. Soriano's name has been all over ESPN radio and the local papers. But did you actually hear ESPN radio mention Wood and Mitre by name? If so, fine, but if not, why would you put their names in the title? For shock value? I will say this: I was listening to ESPN radio AM 1000 local updates at 8:20 AM and 8:40 AM CDT - there was zero mention of Wood's name or Mitre's name. Bruce Levine did speculate that Corey Patterson could be part of the deal, and he did say that Texas sources had mentioned Rich Hill's name.
  22. Is that a period, exclamation point or question mark?
  23. CP, On gut instinct alone, I like the idea of getting both Dellucci and Soriano, but it's hard to refute your numbers on Soriano's road performance, so I can understand why you'd like the Cubs to stay away from him. Another point on Dellucci: he's being actively pursued by both the Astros and Cardinals. I think the Cards are being more aggressive because of Sanders and Walker being on the DL, but the Astros could provide the pitching that the Rangers seek too. I f the Cubs get him, that means neither of those teams can. That's huge when you consider his OBP, and the fact that we still have 10 and 11 games respectively with those 2 clubs.
  24. I just don't like that word selling. You're 3 down in the loss column and you're 12-5 in the last 17 games. You're in the race. I think you can make a composite of moves to balance the now and the future. I don't think any fan would have an issue trading Holly, Rusch or Remmy, and I think Hendry should do it. I don't see any advantage trading Burnitz or Perez unless you are giving up. No comment on Cpatt.
