  1. I certainly think Hendry is going to make an attempt to get him. He seems very serious about wanting 6 starters ready. Then why sign Rusch? That 3mil could be put towards a better SP like Burnett. Because Hendry likes having the lefty at $2.75M, and with the cash available that signing should not be an impediment to adding another power starter as well as OF and SS.

  4. NY Daily News points out some of the reasons why Furcal is seriously interested in looking at the Mets 2B job: (1) With Pedro and Reyes, there is already a Dominican presence on the team, which is very important to him (2) Furcal and his agent probably want 4 years and $40M (similar to Renteria), and the Mets are probably only one of 2 teams in the NL (other being the Cubs), who can afford to pay him that amount (3) he has family in NYC
  5. Furcal worries me a bit. I'll go with Pierre. By the way, Tampa Bay just picked up Lugo's $4.95M option. But I view that move as a similar move to the Cubs picking up Walker's option. It doesn't mean they'll keep him, it doesn't mean they'll trade him, it means they see value in having the option.
  6. And, if he goes there, nobody should be surprised. The Cards are consistent winners, have an opening in OF, and have the cash to pay him.
  7. Funny, I was thinking other side of the age spectrum: Pat Gillick.
  8. Everyone figures the Reds will be active this offseason, and believe they will be looking to trade hitting for pitching. Here's a quick analysis of their numbers: (1) $60M payroll in 2005; haven't heard anything yet to suggest that the number will be drastically higher or lower in 2006 (2) 6 guys under contract for 2006 at $36M Griffey-12.5 (some deferred-call it 2.5M) Casey-8.5 Milton-8.5 Wilson-3.75 Weathers-1.5 Mercker-1.35 (3) 8 guys who appear to be arbitration eligible Dunn-4.6 Ortiz-3.55 LaRue-3.0 Kearns-0.9 Valentin-0.4 Harang-0.4 Pena-0.4 Lopez-0.4 That $13.5M from 2005 could easily be $20M in 2006. (4) Assuming for a minute that none of the arbys are non-tendered or dealt, there would only be $4M ($6.5M if you include Griffey's deferred dough) left to fill 11 positions. My conclusion: As it stands now, there does not seem to be adequate cash to address pitching, so the analysts are right, and we'll see 1 or 2 guys dealt. Just a guess: If Anaheim steers clear of Manny Ramirez, could you see them trading some of their good prospects for Adam Dunn and Jason LaRue. That move would then give the Reds some payroll relief to go after starting pitching. What are your insights on the Reds? Hoops
  9. I'm surprised Terry or Dan didn't ask Stone, "why can't the Cubs get Furcal and Giles?"
  10. O ye, of little faith I was kidding (mostly). Gammons seems to have tons of inside information about what teams are going after what players. He just doesn't seem to put that information to good use when he makes his predictions. He analyzes very well, he doesn't synthesize very well.
  11. Triple B, Not to be pedantic about it, but the quote did say, "He said Cubs priorities include pitching and defense..." The word "includes" could be interpreted to mean that "in addition to other items we've mentioned previously (fundamentals, base running, power, speed), we are also going to focus on pitching and defense." From dictionary.com: include (1) To take in as a part, element, or member. (2) To contain as a secondary or subordinate element Perhaps, I'm looking for a needle in the haystack here, but I would have been really worried if he had said, "Cubs priorities are pitching and defense..." 12. I'll take that bet. As a Tribune shareholder, it would be very hard for me to see Hendry get anything beyond $102M from the executive management based on a 79-83 season.
  13. Two things jumped out at me in regards to September: (1) No games against STL or HOU (2) 18 of the 28 games are at Wrigley
  14. Where'd that rumor come from? (not being hostile, just curious) I read it in one of the NYC papers.
  15. My understanding is that Murton does not have the arm strength to play RF effectively. Now, if he's playing RF in the Fall Leagues, and the Cubs plan to give him instruction there in Spring, I suppose anything is possible. I just don't think it's probable.
  16. Heard on ESPN Radio AM 1000 on 10/31 8:20 AM CST: Bruce Levine has confirmed that the Cubs and Glendon will agree to a 2 year $6M deal.
  17. Walker in Shea? Think about it. If the Mets make a move to get Carlos Delgado, they might be willing to trade Cliff Floyd. Trading Floyd's $6.5M for Walker's $2.5M makes sense for both clubs on several levels. Floyd plays LF not 1B. My point is that they might feel the need to dump a salary to bring on Delgado.
  18. Let's see if we hear anything about this rumour during the week: Zito to NYM for Heilman and Milledge.

  20. There are two teams if you read between the lines of what his agent has said: Anaheim and Cleveland.
  21. Manny's 10/5 rights really put Boston in a quandary. I don't think Manny wants to go to Arizona. I still think Gammons' 3-way deal rumour of Manny going to Anaheim, a bunch of prospects going from Anaheim to Arizona, and Troy Glaus and a prospect heading to Boston makes a lot of sense. When do those 10/5 rights kick in? http://redsox.bostonherald.com/redSox/view.bg?articleid=108090 Already kicked in.

Youkilis can play 1B.
