  1. Anthony Reyes and Jason Marquis to Philadelphia for Bobby Abreu and some cash. I have no idea who the source is or if it has any validity or not. I do know that Marquis' (arbitration eligible and free agent after 2006) name and a prospect have been thrown around in a bunch of rumours lately involving Cincinnati (Griffey or Dunn) and Texas (Mench). With the Winter Meetings less than a week away, things are beginning to heat up on the trade front.
  2. http://www.sptimes.com/2005/11/28/Rays/Rays_lay_groundwork_f.shtml Vance, Acccording to this article, the Cubs indeed have expressed interest. "The most advanced talks apparently concern centerfielder Joey Gathright, who it is believed has drawn interest from 10 teams, including the Dodgers, Marlins, White Sox, Cubs, Angels and Giants;"
  3. I wouldn't mind someone LIKE Kevin Brown (in his prime, without the injuries, or the 9 figure contract), but not Kevin Brown himself. Thanks, but no thanks. He'll be 41 by the time the season starts. I could see Hendry signing Esteban Loaiza if it's late Jan./early Feb., and he hasn't been signed yet.

  5. We'll have to agree to disagree on Rozner. I like him, and have been reading him for years, so I believe he has very good insights; you dislike him, that's your opinion, I respect that.
  6. "Almost" is the key word. Trading Juan Cruz for slugs like Pratt and Lewis was pretty dismal and qualifies for "fleeced" status in my books. Especially when you consider that the Braves were able to use Cruz as part of a package to land Tim Hudson.
  7. Do you think the Delgado trade or Thome trade can give us any new insight as to what it might take to land Abreu in terms of players and money?
  8. It's mostly about Howry and Furcal, of course, but leave it to Mr. Miles to sneak in a few other lines about an open slot that we have been talking a lot about. http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/sportsstory.asp?id=125059 "The Cubs also need a right fielder. Brian Giles (Padres) remains a free-agent possibility, but a Furcal signing would most likely take the Cubs out of the running for Giles. If the Phillies decide they want to trade right fielder Bobby Abreu, the Cubs will be a suitor."
  9. Are you trying to imply that you were the first to think of trading for Luis Castillo? Or are you simply pointing out that Rozner is a complete hack unable to compose an unprompted thought? Neither. I'm pointing out that the idea of the Cubs trading for Castillo is now out there in the public domain. GMs can claim all they want that they don't read the newspapers, but we know it simply is not true. Negative comments about Mr. Rozner are completely unwarranted Don. Mr. Rozner is a well respected columnist in this town, who has built up a tremendous network within the Cubs, Sox, Bears, Bulls, and Blackhawk organizations. He is so gifted and well-liked that Ryne Sandberg mentioned him by name during his Hall of Fame induction speech, as an example. Regardless of the Tribune Co. owning the Cubs, it's the Daily Herald guys like Mr. Miles and Mr. Rozner, who are "in the know" on all things Cubs.
  10. Numbers I heard: Phillies pick up $25M, Sox pick up $21M.

  12. In today's Daily Herald from Barry Rozner, see Marlin Fishing: http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/rozner.asp?id=124901
  13. That may be the Cubs situation too. Either Furcal or Giles.
  14. Corey Patterson, Jerry Hairston and Jose Macias are arbitration eligible as well. I would assume that their salaries would have to factor into the left-over money, or be traded or be non-tendered.
  15. Sounds like a done deal according to Jon Heyman of Newsday. http://www.newsday.com/sports/baseball/mets/ny-spmets112405,0,3173460.story?coll=ny-homepage-bigpix2005 "The Mets have agreed to send righthanded pitching prospect Yusmeiro Petit and young first baseman Mike Jacobs to the Marlins for Delgado, according to someone familiar with the deal. As part of the deal, the Marlins will send $7 million back to the Mets to cover part of the $48 million remaining on Delgado's contract."
  16. I lived in NC for a year, and even though the NHL in Raleigh is a monumental failure, I wouldn't be surprised to see the MLB put a franchise there. The southern fanbase is strong, and would have only ATL to compete with. The Carolinas have a strong baseball tradition near the Coast, Piedmont and Lowlands. I think a ballclub - with solid talent like FLA currently has - would be very, very viable. Don't forget that FLA also has a strong following in NC. The Mudcats are in Zebulon (near Raleigh), and a lot of people love Dontrelle and Miggy. Plus, the Bulls are wonderfully popular, and the Charlotte Knights (Sox AAA team) has decent attendence considering the crap that's run through their farm system the last few years. Carolina Baseball would work. I think Raleigh is a good guess. I'll add Norfolk, Nashville and Northern New Jersey as destinations.
  17. Who is your favored candidate for SS? AGonz? Neifi? Cedeno with all of 80 major league at bats? an injury prone and past his prime Nomar? Lugo Lugo Lugo Lugo Lugo... Is he available? What would it cost the Cubs? Tampa Bay supposedly talked to the Braves and Mets about Lugo a few weeks back. Lugo will make $4.95M in 2006, and then will become a free agent. I have no idea what it might cost to get him. But as long as Angel Guzman and Felix Pie are not involved, I would trade any 2 prospects to get him. Since Furcal's and Lugo's numbers are very similar, it's reasonable to assume that next year Lugo will be using what Furcal signs for (this year) as a benchmark for his new conctract. So to keep Lugo wouldn't you be using the same amount of $'s that you could have used to sign Furcal to get a player 5 years older (Lugo) and that cost you two prospects? If that's the case Hoops, I'd rather have Furcal. Good point. But then, why not try to negotiate an extension now before the deal is consummated? You might get a discount.

  19. Did Levine say anything about the Cubs or Sox possible interest in Bill Mueller?

  21. Why not Karonka? Left-handedness, and recent fall success outweigh Aardsma's right-handedness and complete meltdown since he's become a Cub. That said, I wouldn't bat an eye if Koronka was dropped. Well, maybe both of them will be outrighted since critical mass is beginning to form on a Howry signing.
  22. I find Kotsay to be quite over-rated. I'd rather trade for Zito.
