  1. I am actually watching Austria play Poland right now because the game is unwatchable right now. When are they going back to regular camera angles?
  2. Isn't the problem with signing Bonds or Lofton that it is going to take whoever we sign off the street a few weeks to start hitting? I mean neither went to spring training with a club, so it has been over seven months since either has seen major league pitching. It is probably going to take a few weeks for them to really start hitting even if anything is left in the tank for either. I think we are better off hoping Hoffpauir can give the Cubs a couple of hot months.
  3. Well it is clear now why they called up Patterson since he is in LF today and leading off. I really wish this team wasn't so obsessed with this leadoff hitter nonsense. I was hoping that they would stick Hoffpauir in the lineup to give Lou the lefty power bat to protect Aramis so Fukudome could finally hit leadoff.
  4. The Indians are going to be more interested in Murton than Pie? This really gets to the heart of the matter though. The Indians really need more hitting than pitching, and the Cubs don't have any elite talent to trade to them in the minors. The Indians are not looking to restock a farm system like the Orioles were doing in the offseason. The Indians want guys who can be impact players, not a bunch of guys who might turn out to be serviceable players. The only way this really makes sense is if this becomes a three team trade where the Cubs move their "surplus" of young solid arms to another team for some impact position prospects to the Indians for Sabathia.
  5. I agree with this, but I don't think Rich Hill being the centerpiece of a trade for a starter like C.C. Sabathia is a buying low on Rich Hill. Is Rich Hill at his best better than C.C. Sabathia? That is assuming that you can coaching him to being his best because this is starting look more and more like the old Rich Hill. Thought I should add that I like Rich Hill, and am hoping that he finds his mechanics because we could really use Rich Hill from last year to fill out the rotation.
  6. I'm to the point where I can't see us landing a legit #2 or better without including someone like Lee or Aramis (obviously not going to happen). There's a greater chance of someone from within stepping up and performing like a #2 by the end of the year than there is of us acquiring one. I hope Hendry serves me a big ol' dish of crow on this one. Carlos Marmol is the biggest trading chip we have at this point. Not that we are likely to move him anytime soon, but I think most teams trading away a #2 starter are looking to get younger players back than Lee or Ramirez. With the way that pitchers are currently valued, I can't help but think that guys like Marshall, Gallagher, and Hart have to have some value. They all have had some success at the major league level already and under the teams control for at least four more years. Are they enough to land a Sabathia or Burnett is the question.
  7. Probably b/c he was playing like crap when he went on the DL before, so it was unlikely his replacement couldn't match his .577 OPS. To add onto that thought, not only was Soriano not producing but DLee and Soto were hitting much better than they are now. I still think we are okay, man when was the last time that you could even think that the Cubs offense was fine after losing their HR leader. This certainly doesn't help us though, but I agree this is a chance to see if we can get lucky with a Hoffpauir that we can ride for a month or two.
  8. CC Sabathia is the reason why all of us should be White Sox fans for the next month or so, obvouisly cross-town series excluded. Sabathia is only going to become available if the Indians fall out of it. The Indians are 7.5 games back now. We need the White Sox to keep winning to bury the Indians by the all-star break to make them sellers. While it is nice to see that the Cubs are listed as the most agressive suitors for Sabathia, you do have to worry about how we match up with the Indians. The Indians as many have said are going to be most interested in quality and not quantity, which we don't have, and they are going to be more interested in offense than pitching. Our best position prospect plays a position that the Indians have locked up for a while, and whose values as a prospect is pretty much lost if he isn't a CF. When it is all said and done, Sabathia is going to be the prime target if he is made available, and another starter is going to be biggest need barring injury.
  9. No when you move the DH to the field you can't make someone else the DH.
  10. First I have to admit that I wanted the Cubs to sign Prior in the offseason. I was pretty upset that we let a pitcher go with that amount of potential, but this one Hendry got right. It was time to let him go. Second, the comparision between Fidych and Prior I think is accurate if you are talking about the effect that it had on their teams. However, Prior was a much better pitcher than Fidych showed. Prior's 2003 was an amazing season, much less for a pitcher's first full year in the majors. Prior's K:BB ratio was over 9:1 that year. The Bird didn't even manage a 2:1 ration in his one full year. Both were star pitchers, but Prior had a chance to be real special that is frustrating to think about at this point.
  11. Hmmmmmmmmmmm....touche, Edmonds. Touche. Edmonds will not have TWO hits today. Now please say the Cubs won't win the World Series this year.
  12. Score is reporting that the Sun Times report of Sam Zell rejecting the offer to buy Wrigley Field is false, and that the negotiations are still going on between ISFA and the Tribune.
  13. I am going to guess because the hitting coach normally isn't a topic of conversation unless the offense is sputtering, and then the conversation is when is the hitting coach going to be fired. I agree though that I love watching this Cubs offense, and Loue and Perry deserve credit for the turnaround.
  14. This was mentioned in the broadcast, but didn't see it anywhere. Marquis is going to "skipped" in his next start. Dempster is going to pitch on the 11th in Marquis' spot, and Zambrano is going to follow. What is going to be interesting is who is going to start the 12th and the 13th. Marquis is likely to get one of those starts. While the options for the other are pretty interesting. Lieber might get one more shot, but after this one I am not sure Lou can go that route. Marshall and Gallagher would seem to be the next in line. Either way it is going to be at least eight days before Marquis starts again. Wonder what will happen to him if he walks the bases loaded this time around.
  15. That's pretty poor reasoning. really? why? they've lost every tinkered-with game. if i remember correctly, they shuffled the rotation to allow marquis (and not hill) to start against the brewers. they lost. hill was then nine days removed from his last start when he threw against the cardinals. they lost that game. and lieber, who took hill's spot in the rotation, got battered today. they lost. you really don't see how this rotation shuffle hurt the cubs? I don't think it's the reason they're 3-6. I agree. I think the fact that the Cubs averaged over 6 and a half runs a game in April versus 3 runs a game in May is a bigger reason for the difference.
  16. Agree with everything except the trade part since we signed Reed Johnson after being cut by the Blue Jays.
  17. Gary Matthews Jr. and Miguel Cairo were both claimed after that game when the Cubs tried to sneak both through waivers. I always remembered that we could have kept either, and sent down Augie Ojeda who had options. But we knew that wasn't an option with Baylor around.
  18. I do! I do! Especially since this team has been looking, guess I shouldn't say looking because we all know what the Cubs look for in bench players, for right handed thunder since Angel Echevarria. That was why I thought a decent option was to trade one of our right handed relievers to Detroit for Thames.
  19. With the Cubs winning 8-1 yesterday to complete the sweep of the Mets, the Cubs have racked up 41 runs in 4 games. The thing that is nice is the fact that this team had four big games in a row. In years past it seemed that we would get a big outcome, and then the offense would disappear. Checking it out at baseball reference it appears that the last time the Cubs had four games of 7 runs or more was April 18-21, 2004, kind of wierd how it was almost four years ago exactly when this team did it and after winning a division title as well. The Cubs scored 10, 8, 9, and 10 runs against the Reds and Pirates. Interestingly the Cubs managed to lose one of those games that year.
  20. Spectuclar in the first 3 1/3 innings. Struggled after that with his control, but worked out of jams to only give up one run.
  21. Be nice to see Lou go with Hart in this situation, but since it is only a 3 run lead we will probably see Marmol.
  22. Tough second strike call on Murton. Normally don't get that call when the catcher has to move his mitt that far.
  23. NYM pitching change for the right handed Matt Murton. Only batter left on the bench is The Riot. If Murton comes through with a single here for two more runs, I hope Lou sits Marmol down and gets Wuertz up. Would be nice to not have to use Marmol and Wood back to back in games that ultimately were not that close. *Note-not arguing with the usage yesterday since the game was close until the bottom of the eighth. Just would be nice to have both rested for the road trip.
