Pedro + a solid-not-incredible prospect for Hancock feels like a deal Jed should pounce on given the remaining years of control. They need help beyond this year.

Given the expiring athletic primes and financial investments of certain players on this team, Jed has cornered himself into a position where, once again, pushing more chips in to the center makes the most sense. It’s not ideal, and I’m torn on the timing of this competitive window and how it interacts with players like Suzuki, Bregman, Swanson, etc but as you previously stated, this team has a real chance IF impacting pitching can be added, and the IF the Cubs experience some positive regression on the health side. All unlikely, of course.

Please expand on your convos with Dansby — are you insinuating he’s not quite sharp enough to be implementing this advantage, or that he’s much more simplified in his approach? Or something else?

Keep this up Jed. The lack of roster continuity in today’s game is under discussed, IMO. Keeping good players around for longer just makes sense, and is a refreshing turn of events for a FO that doesn’t make a habit out of it.

Nice work Jed. Didn’t think he had it in him, A bit wild to think how exceptionally rare it has been to see this team lock up its young talent. This is refreshing. I’ll guess 7/$180M.

Wonderful analysis here. @Matthew TruebloodGiven this approach crossroads for PCA, if you are Jed and had to make an extension decision *this* offseason, do you: A) Tender him an extension (a true extension that goes beyond his arb years) B) If yes, how much? I could understand the Cubs wanting to take another year before committing huge dollars to him, at least until they feel that his approach has stabilized to some degree. Luckily for PCA and the Cubs, the floor is so high between the fielding and base running that he provides decent incentive for a long term contract despite the significant risk offensively, IMO.

Beat me to it Bertz. Brewers are circumventing the models in ways that Dan laid out in that article. In my mind, the delta between the two teams feels more like 5 wins rather than 10.

Matthew — just wanted to drop a note and tell you how much I appreciate the incredibly thorough writing and analysis here. Having spent the last 15 years at “other” Cubs blogs, I was turned on to yours just a couple weeks ago. Northside baseball has been a breath of fresh air, to say the least. The quality of content here is several standard deviations greater than the other options. I have a found a new home!
