WSI is definitely not the vibe we’re striving toward, that’s for sure. But your point at large is valid in the sense that if a person’s general demeanor is contrarian to the community, that person may not be a good fit. We’ve had to ban a few people over the years not because they were breaking rules but because they kept banging drums negatively against the community and in favor of another organization. It will shock absolutely no one here that one prominent example was a Cardinals fan, though you might be surprised to learn they were banned from Twins Daily, of all places. They were banned under the newly-placed rule I created just for them, the “dude, just shut the **** up already” clause. -
You don't have to worry about this. We've been navigating this problem on Twins Daily for years now. If push comes to shove, community integrity trumps page views. We've taken various stands at TD over the years - the most recent being Covid and George Floyd - and seen temporary drops in traffic as a result. We're fine with that. We welcome all creeds and colors but draw the line at misinformation and/or extreme troublemaking, particularly if it's intolerant of entire classes of people. The only thing to be intolerant of is intolerance, you probably know the spiel. But because I don't really follow the off-topic forum, I'm going to miss stuff. If anyone has input of any kind, I cannot stress enough that they should PM me anytime. One of the tasks I hope to accomplish in 2024 is that as the community grows, we start to build out a little more robust moderating staff to handle the inevitable influx of bad actors that will register and try to cause trouble.

I need long-time user opinions on this, I don't actually use the off-topic forum. I saw some comments mentioning an influx of new users who may not share the core beliefs of the existing community. Is this a problem that is bothering some of you? We need to attract new users but also find a way to integrate them into the existing culture. So consider this a sounding board for things you're concerned about and things you see that could be improved. The site is going to continue growing so this will not be a temporary problem. I'd like to enact measures to protect certain aspects of the current community where possible.

Welcome to NSBB! I think the assumption is that these trades are not a replacement for signing free agents but a supplement to additional moves. If the Cubs get Bieber and then Chapman or Bellinger, then follow up with a lesser free agent for 1B/3B, they're in decent shape. That's a lot of tasks to accomplish, though.

I think Bellinger likely outperforms Chapman but if Chapman can be had for four years at lesser money instead of 6+ years and $200m for Bellinger, I might prefer Chapman. -

Patrick Mooney of The Athletic wrote a comprehensive round-up of Cubs rumors and mentioned several note-worthy things: 1. The Cubs are expected to be in on Japanese starting pitcher Shota Imanaga once his (higher-dollar) countryman Yoshinobu Yamamoto selects a team. Imanaga, 30 years old, will come at a much lower AAV and years than Yamamoto. 2. Christopher Morel is trade bait but the Cubs appear to be wary of trading him for a pure rental player. 3. The Cubs realize they need a third baseman but don't appear closely linked to any specific players at this point in time. Jon Heyman of the New York post reported that Cody Bellinger and his agent, Scott Boras, are asking for a contract north of $200 million. Bellinger reportedly liked his time in the friendly confines and is interested in returning to the Cubs provided they meet his terms. Bellinger had an excellent bounce back season in 2023, posting a 133 OPS+ and 4.4 rWAR. The center fielder struggled with injuries and ineffectiveness following his 2019 MVP season with the Dodgers but despite how long he has been in the league and the ups and downs of his career, 2024 will be his age-28 season. -

I guess so? Just seems like a huge risk with a guy who averages well under 100 IP per season. And I don't see why Glasnow would sign anything if it's for fewer than four years. -

Bellinger's batted ball data is troublesome. He grips and rips enough pulled balls to have some value but his 2023 exit velocity and BABIP are concerning. Will he return to being bad? No, I doubt that. But I think we could see some regression in 2024.

With Bellinger, to me it all boils down to years and money. I didn't/don't feel that way about Ohtani or Yamamoto. I simply don't trust the one year of semi-bounceback we saw from Bellinger last season. And with PCA likely pounding on the door and potentially forcing Bellinger to move out of a premium position, I've basically talked myself into Matt Chapman while typing this post.

I never considered the Cubs having more than a single-digit chance to sign Ohtani but the Glasnow news is troublesome (and then there's the Soto trade). And I'm just not hearing any chatter about the Cubs in any significant free agent deals. What is going on? Obviously, I'm pretty new to the Cubs community but this feels like the Cubs are operating as if they're a mid-market team. I know many of you have complained about this in the past but... yikes. This sucks.
