  1. I was unaware they were brining back Marmol to close on the 100th anniversary.
  2. Like or not he was the face of the franchise for quite awhile. For every fan that hates him, there are probably 100 fans that were kids in his hey day that love him. Not too mention that these "kids" are now in their 20s and 30s, which means they (FO) should worry about them as a fan base.
  3. Which will obviously lead to ... what? Heavy drinking?
  4. If the offseason, the cubs sign Mike Adams and Koji Uehara, maybe take a flier on Joakim Soria, it's easy to imagine this bullpen being in much better shape next year. I still wouldn't trust any of those guys. Ok, if we sign those guys, we can say it.
  5. How long have you cheered for this team? 45 years! the way we have found ways to lose the last two years has become special though
  6. At times this looks like the start of the season in Major League.
  7. Next year when we bring in the next crop of cast-off relievers, how about no one talks about how much better our bullpen is going to be.
  8. Very Mark Reynolds like. I'll take it! or Adam Dunn… They weren't lying when they said the kid had power... and I'm not sure he's really gotten a hold of one yet.
  9. The cutter was supposed to be more safe than the slider, less torque. However, I think that the number of times they are throwing the cutter per game changes that idea. They may have thrown 12-15 hard sliders a game, and now some guys are throwing as many cutters as fastballs. Mariano was an anomaly, using him as an example is like using Nolan Ryan and his 300 innings a year to show that huge inning totals don't hurt anyone.
  10. Arizona's pitching is so horrid that they may battle for the #1 pick. With their division, they could lose a 100 if they don't get something fixed quickly.
  11. That was hardly a cadillac trot. He watched it for a quick second, and ran. If you want to say he should be embarrassed for thinking it was gone, ok. I guarantee that every team will have a guy grand stand much, much worse than that. He should have done nothing more than bark back at Cole. He would have had the last laugh because he blasted Cole and his team won.
  12. Unfortunately we are at home, as Arizona is a very solid 1-11 at home…. We do get to send out Wood, Hammel and Shark in 3 of the 4 games.
  13. If a team has a ready/near-ready arm the caliber we need, why would they trade for shark instead of just going with their guy. I think we are looking at TOR potential guys that are at best AA, and hopefully ready sometime 2015 if not later. Are we better off getting the best players possible and look to flip those for Price or the like? It seems we need to find a team like ourselves with a lot of position players but no pitchers close..that have a need at the ML level. A tough injury to a contender would help!
  14. Let's stick to baseball…sofa king.
  15. Very beneficial to the thread.
  16. It was an exaggeration to show the point. He is a good, young player but that's not enough for some people. So if it's not because of expectations how would someone be down on a 23-24 year old who was 1 of 2 cub everyday players to post a war worthy of being an MLB starter?
  17. He said 50 games, FWIW That was Rizzo's first season up where he struggled. Lake is struggling with K's but doing better overall than Rizzo did. I don't want t compare him to Rizzo, just saying that young guys struggle, and can improve k rates. Don't know why we have to be so down on Lake. I don't know where he'll end up but I just hope for the best. Our best outfielder(Nate) last year posted .251 .301 .770 as basically a platoon vs righties(53 at bats vs LHP) and we were fired up. If Lake can do anything near that in the future, as our 3rd best outfielder, I think that would be solid. Even if he just holds the spot until Soler or Almora are ready.
  18. The problem with Rizzo's value is that we simply need or are hoping he would be much, much more. Which isn't fair to him. I think some are expecting a combo of derrick lee defense and a young Pujols offense. I also think that many people are down on his "value" because a lot of it comes from his defense, which does not show up in the score sheet. Also the FO's comment about him being a "generational talent" didn't help the expectations.
  19. Kind of small sample, you might want to look at Castillo, Schierholtz and Valbuena who aren't far behind. He also has a .800+ ops compared to those 3 struggling to put up .650.. Also what was Rizzo's K rate in his first 50 major league games? I just want sit back and see what we have here. With Baez and Bryant on the horizon, we don't need Lake to be a superstar. If he can be decent, and fall in behind Baez, Bryant, Rizzo and Castro, put up a mid .750 ops like he did pretty much every season in the minors he'll be fine for us.
  20. First when anyone puts up Bonds' steroid numbers this question would be legit. 2nd, we have Rizzo throwing up a .920 Ops, Lake over .800, Castro and Bonifacio hitting well, and we aren't close as an offense. Another bat would help, but Baez won't put up Bonds numbers, and even if he puts up "Baez minor league like" numbers, we might make not make it to .500 Now when Bryant and Baez come up we might have something to talk about. except that we still have our bullpen
  21. Seems that a lot of hitters struggle with Wainwrights breaking stuff… Lake has almost a half a season of major league games played, do you really think that teams don't have a scouting report on him until he shows up on game day? If you guys realize he hits fastballs and struggles with breaking stuff, I'm pretty sure all the other teams do too.
  22. and that's without top end draft picks. I'd add they have shown a knack for finding/rehabbing veteran starting pitchers It would be interesting to see who some of these names brought them in trades..
  23. This I don't care about. Doesn't fit in our window and we were never going to out-bid the Yankees. Plus, outfield is not a need. This is a joke, right? The outfield is a nightmare of awfulness. Right now it is, look at our system. But who do we know is "making it" for sure? we don't even know if Bryant will make it, or if he'll be an outfielder. We also need pitching, so if we happen to develop too many outfielders(yea, right) we then deal for pitching. but we can want to sign someone all we want…they have to want to sign with us. Right now, it's a tough sell. In a year or two it'll be much easier.
