  1. Last year 6 shortstops posted above a .320 ob% and only 1 posted above .300 average or an .800 ops. If Castro can make a run at .300, he should post at least .330 ob% but certainly that .320 range with a .750 ops very possible, which all would put him near the top at SS. As the club puts more offense around him, he doesn't need to anything more than his norm. Right now he and Rizzo have to carry the offense. Really its just nice to watch Castro and not feel like he has no chance like the end of last season.
  2. That was the year that Shark was tough in the pen. Marshall was there, Marmol was good, and they had Russell. Offensively in 2010 Soto had a ops of .890 in 105 games, Soriano .818, Byrd .775, Fukudome .809, Castro had a .347 OB%, AND .755 OPS. Ramirez was coming off his worst season but did post .871 in 2011, add Pena who posted .819- I think we forget what kind of offense that should have been. Obviously some guys fell off, but man we would kill for a lineup that had 5 guys that would post an .800 ops, and a couple of others that were close. We should have felt good about that team, they weren't a sure fire winner but we had to feel that if Wells, Silva (who was decent in 2010, 10-6 4.22 era) or Cashner worked out we could be right in the middle. Unfortunately they bombed. Looking back, we would kill for some of the performances these "non-winners" put up..
  3. Some though were pretty excited. I certainly didn't see it as the train wreck it became. It may have just been excitement that the FO actually spent money more than that we signed Jackson. hard to remember- it seems so long ago!
  4. I think you have to let the season play out before you decide he's bad this year. Last year was basically exactly the output he has had every season of his career. He had a little higher slugging, and a little lower ob%/BA for a slightly higher ops. His war was 1.3, his career war has been right around 1.0. Obviously not earth shaking but it says he should return to that level by the end of the season. Until we have another option just let it play out. He has proven there is no reason to give him at bats vs any lefties. His best value is as a straight LH platoon. As for 5 mil, I think we need to have a talk with the arbitration officer.
  5. I'll go with that. They didn't know how Wood would work out, which changes things looking back. I personally didn't think it was a great signing at the time but I understand it. His failure shouldn't be looked at as a sign that the FO doesn't know what they are doing, it's on him. I mean you sign an "under 30" starting pitcher, who has posted an era basically between 3.50 and 4.00 over the last 5 seasons. A guy with tremendous stuff that hasn't quite put it all together. You don't expect him to come in and post his worst Era by nearly a full run since his 1st year as a starter. Then back that up by being even worse so far this season. I'm sure that had to think that worst case scenario he sports a 4.00 era and could be dealt sometime during this deal for something of value.
  6. I think they knew they had no other options but to go out and buy some starting pitching, since you need 5 just to start and 7 or 8 over a season. They needed a body just to make the starts and account for the innings. But the one thing they have been able to do is refurbish starting pitching and even Jackson at his best (mid 3's era) isn't a difference maker. It just seems like a long term for a body to fill a role. What they are paying him is not a huge amount as far as decent starting pitching goes-compared to Garza, Santana, Burnett, etc but he hasn't come close to his average which is on him more than the FO.
  7. I don't think the Brewers can overtake the Cards but they have the makings of a serious playoff contender barring injury. They have big bats in Braun, Ramirez, and CarGo, all should/could post .850+ ops, Segura and Lucroy could approach .800. Add in Reynolds/Overbay platoon that could also post above .800 and Gennett who should hit around .300 with a .330 ob%-they have a ton of offense. Pitching-wise they have 3 proven starters in Lohse, Gallardo and Garza. Estrada has been a very solid starter in Milwaukee and Peralta is a good young pitcher that seems to be coming on. K-rod seems to be back in form, Thornberg gives them a good young arm, Henderson closed a lot last year, duke and smith give them 2 lefties out of the pen. Heck, after looking at this, it's hard to say they aren't for real. They have more proven commodities than anyone but the Cardinals. When you look at an offense that could have 5 players go above .800 ops, and another platoon spot that could. Plus a real chance for 2or 3 spots go over .900 that only could carry this team a long way. The only thing that can really stop them is injuries or if their bullpen implodes.
  8. I hope Rondon continues but this sounds a bit like what was said about Strop after his 1 save of 2013 and he was proclaimed a sure fire fix for our closer situation.
  9. Funny thing is Garza was brought in to be part of a winner. We had a team on paper that was made to compete. We had a solid bullpen, and 3 good starters . Offensively there was Ramirez,Castro,Soriano, Fukudome, Byrd, Soto and Pena..they just fell apart but you can't say they didn't at least try to put a winner on the field. But that was probably the last attempt. Perhaps, Mr. Garza if you guys hadn't failed so miserably, they wouldn't have gone with the full rebuilding plan.
  10. Its an error on Castro but Rizzo needs to come off the bag and make the tag. With the pitcher running it would have been an easy play, and he should have seen how far away the runner was. He didn't need to stretch.
  11. Not gritty enough, he should have left those hearings with dirt on his threads. yeah, a perfect example is Pete Rose. a man who got so in debt to bookies that he probably threw baseball games to get himself out. people still don't understand how THAT is an actual offense that attacks the true integrity of the game. but because he's white, gritty, and played hard he should be reinstated. Very true. However, #1 there is nothing that says that happened. #2 What Pete Rose the manager did, doesn't change what Pete Rose the player did.
  12. The Jackson signing really stands out. It's the one time they seem to have gone outside of their plan to sign someone. I don't know if it was to appease fans-which is a bad idea, or a knee jerk reaction to not getting Sanchez. The only thing I can see is that they figured he would at least continue his average performance and a contender somewhere would want him at a decent price tag of 11 mil a year. Which if he was at the performance of the years before coming here ( high-3 to low era), someone would want but not the 5.00+ era he has posted
  13. Travis is not very sharp…hopefully he can hang in there until he finds it
  14. Evidently PED's and our pitching are not the only things that Ryan braun can hit hard.
  15. Evidently PED's and our pitching are not the only things that Ryan braun can hit hard.
  16. That may have been when our "caring" was taken off of life support. I think the fatal blow was struck in the Diamondbacks series.
  17. catcher's a dead field today ….automatic out
  18. The Sox are the best hitting "IF' Flowers, Viciedo, and Ramirez continue to hit in the high .300's, and Abreau, Dunn and Flowers continue at above a .900 ops which isn't going to happen. Beyond that the only guy under achieving is DeAza, so it's not like other guys are going to pick up when these guys drop off. I am also not sold on Eaton posting a .360 ob% or Gillespie batting .300. It's frustrating to watch them get off to a hot start knowing their not that good. To me the difference between the cubs and sox is Chris Sale. Not sure there's a spot on the field that I'd trade players with them and they certainly don't have the young guys on the horizon that we do.
  19. Not a chance they will fade greatly. They play hard but seriously. They traded their best offensive player in Rios, 3 starting pitchers, their closer, RH and Lh set up men. They have a stud in Sale, a solid starter in Quintana, a vet in Danks who is really a 4 or 5 at best. They being carried offensively by Flowers, Rameriz, and Viceido who will not hit 350+ and have a 900 ops for long. They are doing it with smoke and mirrors. Their pitching is bad, and their offense will return to their norm.
  20. So current. I had seen the bleached Sammy, just not the blue eyed, dreamy Sammy
  21. Hawks,Bulls are both on…Cubs basically on local cable access channel not a tough choice…
