  1. Believe me, I would welcome that because I have that common irrational fear that he goes on to succeed with someone else. On a slightly more rational basis, his damage was significant, but much less than many others who have come back strong. Just because Hendry wasted a few million on the Wade Miller experiment (oh brother!) doesn't mean that the money won't be well spent on Prior.
  2. I wouldn't say it's my worst nightmare, but I do fear that happening. I more than fear it...I'm resigned to the FACT it will happen. And SD seems like a likely place. I still think he will be our #5 next year, though. The Cubs will non-tender him. Bruce Miles says otherwise, so, unless you have some sort of source, it'd be nice if you stopped stating this as though it were a fact. I think it is pretty clear that this is my opinion only. Miles certainly has access. But are his statements more than his opinion based on what he knows? Based on the numbers involved, I can't the see the Cubs tendering him a contract. They might try to get him to bite on an incentive-laden two-year deal, but, in my opinion, he would never take that from the Cubs.

  4. I am sure I am not alone. I had a dream last night that I was too nervous to watch the game. My intention was to turn on the TV after midnight to find out what happened. Unfortunately I heard the TV in my brother's room that the Cubs were trailing 2-0 in the top of the seventh. This brother lives out of the country. And then when I left my room after midnight another brother told me that the Cubs lost 7-2. This brother has become a man of the cloth and does not own a TV. He said that Tom Burgmeier gave up a bunch of runs. When I said Burgmeier isn't on the Cubs we figured out it was Scott Eyre. I haven't lived with my brothers for nearly twenty years. Maybe they represent the ghosts of Cubs teams past.
  5. I don't think that team would have won 85 games this year. You've tied up 47 million of your 100 million already in 3 players. Beltran has been close to Soriano offensively this year, Drew is identical to Cliff Floyd this year, and Schmidt has pitched 25 innings of over a 6 ERA. Your other 53 million would have to be very well spent in order to get a team that won over 75 games with that start. I didn't mean all three. I meant that many of us could have made the macro-personnel moves over the last three years which would have also led to a $100 million payroll and 85 wins. I thought mentioning these three would pretty much bring in everyone on this board. I guess I should have added the Giles brothers.
  6. same problem as blanco - getting dempster's salary off the books is a nice idea; getting someone to take the whole thing on will be damn near impossible. Why? Dempster has 1/5.5 left on his deal. Even the most SABR-savvy GMs have turned to much worse than Dempster in the name of getting a "true closer", and of course the not-so-bright GMs would probably see him as a bargain. Getting someone to take Dempster wouldn't be a problem, it'd be a matter of getting an appropriate return. If you believe he's so awful it's addition by subtraction. Be satisfied if they just take his contract.
  7. I'm not going to read through all 5 pages, so I apologize if I am repeating others' posts. But if it were up to Hendry, Izturis and Kendall would be everyday players. Monroe and Trachsel had some value to him. I am not saying all his moves were bad, but spending money will tend to raise a GM's success factor. Signing Lilly for $10 million and Soriano for $17 worked this year, but that latter contract might hamstring this franchise for years. The fact is that the yahoos on this board, and that includes me, could have spent money on our personal favorites, Beltran, Drew, Schmidt etc., racked up a $100 million payroll and also won 85 games. I thought Hendry had to make the playoffs to avoid being fired. Well I'll be damned, he did. I just hope he doesn't get an extension right before the Cubs are sold.
  8. In Wood's last eight games spanning the last three weeks of the season he pitched 9 2/3 innings, gave up 3 hits, 0 runs, struck out 13 and walked 3. And this was September, pennant race baseball. Yes he has to be handled more gently than most relievers, but this is the problem of everybody having to have a specific role etc. Wood can pitch three times a week up to five innings, let's say. You could get 80 or 90 good high-leverage innings if he's handled correctly. Why wouldn't someone make the effort to accommodate him?
  9. That was out in Wrigley. Still, for all the negativity on this board, we only lost 4-2. Felt like a blowout. I like you guys, but I think I will avoid the game threads while we are behind.
  10. Can Piniella not see that coming? Maybe Floyd gets hit by a bad breaking ball, and then Monroe homers.
  11. Does Wood really think DeRo would bunt?
  12. Don't go to Social much, do you? No. I go elsewhere for that stuff. Don't hate me.
  13. davhern, who's the girl in your posts (and where is her right hand)?
  14. Running wild? They've killed the generals and are installing a provisional government.
  15. What was that Pittsburgh series? Time for some P-E-R-S-P-E-C-T-I-V-E.
  16. We took 4 out of 5 from those guys. What's good for the goose...
  17. It's the 3rd freaking inning. 90% chance that the marlins win the game... not liking those odds By the same token the Cards have a 45% chance of winning tonight.
  18. The Cards three game sweep at Miller in August looks pretty good to me now.
  19. Amen! If we had lost some of the games the Brewers have lost in the last week we'd all be committed. But I still feel we're gonna blow it (my first Cub game was in 1970).
  20. Flags fly forever. Although they might not have been around.
  21. I'm not sure I would want to go into the 2008 season with an OF of Soriano, Pie & Murton. While I like the individual players, I don't think the whole adds up to enough offense. Of course there is still the business of finishing this season in a most fantastic way. This "next year" stuff is a tough habit to break.
  22. If I had wheels I'd have been a bus.
