  1. That's an awful "matter-of-fact" statement for someone who doesn't work in the Reds front office, and therefore has little to no idea what they would consider. How do you know what the Reds would do? It's a fact that the Reds want pitching. It's a fact that to get a #2 starter, you will have to give up value. It's a fact that releasing Ryan Freel in no way fetches you anything at all in return. So, again, how can you be so certain as to what the Reds would do? Perhaps my language was inexact. "I believe there is a greater chance that the Reds release Ryan Freel than trade Hamilton for the proposed package." I am flattered that you take my posts so seriously. I was under the impression that this was a fan's board. The tenor of your reply indicates that I am under some obligation to check with the Reds' front office, assuming I do not work for them, before publishing such a post. Maybe one of the moderators can clear that up.
  2. Channelling Hendry here...to the Giants for Randy Winn.
  3. Saying Hamilton, Freel or Hopper might be available reminds me of one of those college logic classes. Since Freel is available, whatever else is added to the statement, no matter how ludicrous, doesn't change the logic in the statement. The Reds will release Freel before they trade Hamilton for anything like what you have here.
  4. Trump is just looking for publicity. No way would he pursue the Cubs.
  5. On the flip side, the fact that the Cubs didn't pursue the grievance might have added to the goodwill on our side. I'm a glass half-empty guy. Accruing of goodwill doesn't matter when there is money at stake. If Prior doesn't end up salvaging a career, no matter where, it would be really sad.
  6. This would be so Hendry-like. If they can't get Ibanez maybe they'll go after Randy Winn. Geez.
  7. I just wonder if we could have prevailed on the MLBPA grievance had we left Prior on the Iowa roster. Then he wouldn't have accrued MLB service time this year giving the Cubs two arbitration years. Those on this board who weighed in were pretty sure the Cubs would have lost that battle and created (even more) ill will in the Prior camp.
  8. At least we didn't pick up his option. Rosenthal thought we would as recently as last week.
  9. A trade with Prior and Baldelli as the principals would be interesting. One injury disappointment for another. It'd be great if Prior would sign some sort of incentive-based deal with a team option for 2009, but failing that, I think the Cubs are at a point where they have to look for some sort of face-saving exit strategy. Like someone else said, the situation to avoid is paying the guy for another year to rehab before he goes to pitch someplace else. The Cubs are staring that scenario right in the face right now. Changing your tune? Huh? I think he's confusing me and you. As for me, I'm not changing my tune. I don't even know what my tune is. All I did was counter Lefty's insistence that Prior would be non-tendered with evidence from one of Bruce's articles that he wouldn't be. You're right. I didn't realize there were two of you. I'll be more careful in the future. But I did feel that you implied that I could not possibly be right after Bruce Miles wrote his article. Whether they are negotiating or not, my position was at the end of the day he'd be on-tendered. I hope I am wrong.

  11. The Reds may well have exercised the option to trade him. Forget the Dusty-bashing for a second, but they could have an OF of Hamilton, Bruce and Griffey making Dunn expendable. Hopper is also a Dusty kind of guy (speed and a high BA).
  12. And then they traded him to Detroit for Josh Hamilton.
  13. I wouldn't just dump Jones. But if someone took his salary, which I think is $6 million in 2008, and the money saved could be used toward A-Rod or Furcal, I'd take a chance on Pie in CF with no back-up plan.
  14. If you recall, the Weisbach group was trying to buy the Expos and move them to Las Vegas. Stone was supposed to be the GM then too. At the time, I was speaking with that group about the possibility of going out to Vegas with them. Maybe I should call them again. If it works out I'd have to change my user name.
  15. Really? They couldn't? Alfonseca, Perez, Blanco, Rusch There's plenty of reason to think they, or more specifically Jim Hendry, would be this stupid. Trachsel's option is for like twice as much as those guys'. Hendry wasn't dumb enough to keep Izturis at that rate (I think his option was 4.15M or something for 08) and I can't believe he'll be dumb enough to keep Trachsel. Don't use Izturis as an example. Only if Izturis was still on the team would it be a relevant example. Credit Lou for this one.
  16. If the Cubs offer Prior arbitration they must offer at least $2.9 million. I have been thinking that was too much for Hendry given questions about Prior's availability. I don't know what to make of this. If this means Hendry offers Prior arbitration on the theory that something might stick to the wall, fine. But $4.75 million for Trachsel? It's incomprehensible.

I'm much more curious to see who he's with next year. Sorry Davhern.
  18. Hendry needed to make the playoffs this year to keep his job. Thus his interests and the franchise's long-term interests were not in harmony. The Soriano contract will hang over this team even worse than Sosa's.
  19. Isn't the big wild card in this the fact that the Trib is a publically owned company, and therefore the process of buying the asset has to be transparent? By the time the sale is made Tribune will not be public. Isn't Zell an owner of the White Sox? I think both sales happen concurrently. Which is why the asset value has to be maximized. If you are correct, Tribune could argue that taking a lower price for quick approval is in shareholders' interests. We all know the fix is in. Canning gets it unless something goes horribly wrong for him. Maybe Erin Brokovich can find something in one of his old deals.
  20. But Selig will shepard his guy (Canning) through the process. If he gets 22 votes the theoretical support for Cuban is irrelevant. And if you think a bunch of owners will veto Selig's guy to have a chance to vote on someone who might raise their costs, well, it ain't gonna happen.
