  1. I'm really high on Simmons and Embiid. They both can develop into legit superstars, and they already complement each other well. I'll admit the Celtics will be better next year and the year after that, but Irving and Hayward will start to decline eventually. Al Horford is already in decline. I'm not that high on J. Tatum or J. Brown (good players, but not superstars). The 76ers will eventually upgrade in the head coach department too. We'll see, but I'll take the 76ers being more dominant in 2-3 years once all their young players get stronger and round out their games.
  2. Good (bad) loss? I was actually hoping they'd win that game against Philly. I'm happy they lost, but it was in agonizing fashion. Geez, Embiid, Simmons and maybe Saric is such a great group of young players to build around. They're gonna be really good for a long time with the standard caveat that they remain healthy. Brighter future than Boston IMO.
  3. I feel like the Cubs have a good network of scouts in Venezuela. Our academy there is closed down, but I think going forward with the hard cap on signing bonuses we'll be doing really well in Venezuela. It does suck that these prospects won't be getting as much since the economy and situation in Venezuela is so dire. Sidenote: I really hope the Cubs start spending/signing prospects from Brazil. I really liked Eric Pardinho during the last signing period even if he is undersized.
  4. I know. I saw that. I think he's a late bloomer, like a really late bloomer. Gallardo is done being an effective starting pitcher. I don't think that's the case for Guerra. What injuries did he have last year?
  5. Paul Blackburn? What? That guy? :-k Fun fact, Zips has Paul Blackburn, yes, that guy, as being more valuable (1.2 WAR in 138 IP) than both the Brewers fourth (Gallardo, 0.7/122) and fifth (Guerra, 0.4/99) projected starters. But yes, the rebuilding is over. Lol, I'll take that bet. Blackburn was a pretty mediocre pitching prospect, and I doubt he improves at the big league level. I'm NOT high on this worn down version of Gallardo obviously, but I like Guerra. We're talking about Junior Guerra right? He was really good in 2016, and I'm not sure what happened to him last year. Seems like he was injured most of 2017, but IF he's healthy I would take him over Blackburn all day.
  6. I still get him mixed up with the other guy we also got in the supplemental first round in 2012. Paul Blackburn? What? That guy? :-k
  7. I'm coming out and saying it: I think I like Chatwood more than Cobb now. The more I look at his stats and how the Cubs FO plans to improve his repertoire (utilize his curveball) the more I'm convinced he's going to have a really good year. Like a year similar to Jason Hammel in 14' while with the Cubs (not with the A's). He's going to be one of the best #5 starters in MLB this upcoming season.
  8. [tweet] [/tweet] [tweet] [/tweet] I think LHP - S. McClanahan is definitely going in the top-3 and maybe be considered for 1-1, as long as he remains healthy. Those Chris Sale comps don't seem so crazy anymore.
  9. I don't think it's a terrible deal if they can actually get him to start lifting the ball more and stop hitting so many damn groundballs. I don't know if you want to tinker with his swing, but it feels like he should be way better. He also seems like a good defensive 1B, but the defensive metrics disagree. He's also a good athlete so he should age better than most 1B. It's too long a deal and I doubt he opts-out, but I think Hosmer has some untapped potential if some hitting coach/instructor can get to it. I think he is one of the most divisive players between what scouts think of him vs. what advanced analytics and quants think of him.
  10. [tweet]https://twitter.com/keithlaw/status/964152594011770881[/tweet] It's an ESPN Insider article. His list is pretty different from other lists I've seen so far. He has Florida RHP - B. Singer really low at #22, and LHP - S. McClanahan at #13, which also seems too low. He has N. Madrigal way too low for an advanced college hitter. It's really early so it'll change a lot in the coming months. I can't say I really agree with his placement for this group, but I'm no expert and haven't seen these players in person (not sure if he has either). This draft class is kind of weird and skews pretty heavily in favor of pitchers.
  11. It's a really easy stat to understand. WAR and FIP and some other metrics are harder to decipher and understand especially for old school types not named Peter Gammons.
  12. who the hell forgets that? it was a consensus 1/1a with those two. nothing would've been weird about the bulls taking beasley #2 if they had. I had DRose WAY above M. Beasley. Like not even that close in my eyes. Beasley seemed like an idiot who would never reach his potential, and well that's what happened. He wasn't that tall or long either with serious question marks about his effort level and defense. He wasn't some slam dunk prospect like DRose. There are a few prospects over the years that I didn't like because they had off-court behavior problems and makeup concerns. I think teams knew Beasley liked to smoke pot, and he might have gotten busted once for having a small amount? Maybe that was after he got drafted... All I remember is that I didn't like him.
  13. god what a dark and horsefeathers couple of years that was trading sammy and throwing him under the bus, replacing him with jeromy horsefeathering burnitz, nomar rips his groin off like an hour into the season, surprise d-lee becomes a superstar, next year d-lee still looking superstarish and smashes his wrist 3 hours into the season (and is never really the same, albeit still v good), all the while we all come to the slow realization that 2003 mark prior is never coming back and kerry wood's career might also be over Ugh, I was at the game when Furcal barreled into Lee's wrist. I really wonder how that injury affected his career trajectory? Lee was a complete hitter and finally added power to his game and then that injury happened. That blow really sapped him of power like most wrist injuries tend to do. He never returned to being that same formidable hitter ever again in his Cubs tenure. Derrek Lee will always be one of my favorite Cubs players of all-time. I don't know why we don't use him as a coach in ST or as a special scout or in an advisory role.
  14. Yeah, we're not getting lucky again (no lottery miracle). If I recall correctly we had a 1.7% chance of getting the #1 pick that year, and I still can't believe it actually happened. That was incredible to witness. I think K. Hinrich was our starting PG lol. A lot of people forget this, but this Bulls FO was pretty enamored with M. Beasley too and would've taken him if they got the 2nd pick instead of the 1st pick. What a disaster that would've been.
  15. Most kids. Mostly likely to play on a team with his son and grandson Hahahah :-) Man, he could actually be a grandpa at what like 35 or 36? It's possible right?
  16. Stroman is only under team control for 3 more seasons (18, 19 and 20') and this is the second time he's going to arbitration. He should get a nice bump in salary. I'd like the Cubs to trade for him next offseason, but who stays and who goes? We could trade Chatwood + prospects in some 3-team scenario and get Stroman in return?
  17. After not signing Ohtani every other prospect from Asia feels disappointing right now. I know that's not fair and there are some good players over there, but it really sucks not getting him. I really thought we were getting him after we made it past the first cut.
  18. Yup. The Cubs are just doing Jake a solid. Teams are really scared about signing him long-term. Very little interest and speculation right now. I doubt we offered the same deal we gave to Darvish for Arrieta. Probably just wanted to check in one last time. I'd have no problems signing Jake to a three year deal, but that was never going to happen.
  19. That is not a good look. I feel bad for him, but then again some team would've traded for him if he was a better player. He's just not that valuable anymore. Remember when he was supposed to be a comparable or perhaps better value than Bryce Harper? I do not recall him ever being more valuable than B. Harper? When was that? S. Castro was pretty valuable after his 2011-12 seasons, and then had a bad year in 2013. He bounced back in 2014, but missed some time due to injuries. Then it was pretty much downhill from there...
  20. That is not a good look. I feel bad for him, but then again some team would've traded for him if he was a better player. He's just not that valuable anymore.
  21. When will these articles stop? His swing is broken. He tries to fix it. Video comes out of new swing. Modest improvement and people start claiming he's "fixed". Starts to decline again. Starts to slump. Hits tons of grounders. Somehow hits a HR and then returns to slumping again. Has a bad year with momentary flashes of success at the plate. Tries to clear mind and make improvements to swing during offseason. Wash, rinse and repeat... Yes, when will filler articles about spring training ever stop. What a debacle. Well, I was talking more about a specific filler article, like a really specific filler article that focuses on one player who happens to play for the Chicago Cubs. I guess I never mentioned his name. Sorry about that lol. My fault Sammy Sofa  ...

  23. Enough with the terrible Yu puns please... Can we have a moratorium on them at least till opening day? Dear God. No No No. (sigh) Some dumbass is going to write, "Yu can't always get what Yu want". I walked right into that one...
  24. Enough with the terrible Yu puns please... Can we have a moratorium on them at least till opening day?
  25. DL shenanigans, just like the Dodgers. It's a smart strategy and the 10-day DL is perfect for this strategy. I think Chatwood will surprise some of us, and might be more durable than we expect. Pitching at altitude takes a huge toll on anyone. Incorporating that curveball into his arsenal again and having a strong defense behind him can only help. I think he could be our 3rd best starter by the end of the year.
