  1. I think much depends upon how the word "expansion" is to be interpreted. It doesn't appear clear to me that expansion, in this case, refers exclusively to a physical embiggening of the park. A jumbotron could be considered an expansion of the park in a multimedia/patron service capacity (not to mention revenue generating capability). I have no idea if this reading of the word is reasonable from a legal standpoint, but it seems perfectly cromulent to me.
  2. From the Cubs/Rooftop contract, per Kaplan: That last bit sounds promising...
  3. From Crain's:
  4. Alcantara with 5 tools at 5+/6.
  5. If no one else is going to acknowledge how hilarious/spot-on this comment is, I guess it falls to me. And much like many other critiques of WAR, this is (as TT observes) largely a critique of defensive metrics which--like WAR--are admittedly imperfect. That being said, the degree of correlation is pretty outstanding considering the the breadth of performance that WAR encapsulates.
  6. Regarding injury issues, yeah.
  7. Were it not for injury, Almora would have likely been promoted to the FSL last season as a 19 year old. The only other player under 20 in the FSL last year was Buxton. Edit: Also, in 61 games at Kane County, he slashed .329/.376/.466 despite being about 2 years younger than league average. Throw in all the glowing reports about makeup and instincts, and its pretty easy to see why people like Almora. Another injury plagued season may take a little shine off of him, though.
  8. Speaking of which... ...the Cubs signed him to a minor league contract. Link
  9. What else could I be talking about...
  10. This is a joke, right?
  11. Thanks. Good stuff.
  12. Pardon my ignorance, but I'm unfamiliar with what North said of Olt. And I'm a big fan of legit hope.
  13. Never change, CARDINAL NATION.
  14. Given the interests of ownership at the time, that wouldn't shock me at all. Avoid confrontation + a little profit. As I recall, the rooftops were viewed a bit more sympathetically by many fans in the past, as well. I could be misremembering though.
  15. It is my understanding that in order to block their views, they would have had to deal with the landmark status of the ballpark, and that wasn't (for whatever reason) possible at the time.
  16. Did anyone else hear that on the radio yesterday? Was a station or program specified?
  17. It doesn't change the narrative. The narrative never involved blowing cash on random FA ballplayers. Tanaka was an aberration. That's why they were willing to spend on him. But they didn't get him. The narrative remains as such: only invest in young, pre-prime ballplayers until the fruits of the farm system are entrenched at the MLB level. At that point, the roster can be supplemented with FA signings. I'd love to be wrong, but acquiring Justin Ruggiano and a bunch of relievers has done little to disabuse me of this notion.
  18. I don't like it any more than anyone else here, but [expletive], it sure seems like the writing is on the wall.
  19. 1) I have very little confidence in any of the reported numbers, so I don't think there is much to be gained from speculation based upon those numbers, and 2) even if we can trust the reported numbers, the bids we have seen tell us only about what they were willing to spend on a 25 year old elite FA pitcher. They don't tell anything about what they are willing (or will be willing) to spend on players in general, and I don't think we can infer anything based upon this bid; this bid was made for a very unique variety of player that the FO values very much. I don't think we can assume that they would spend the same amount on just any player in the near term.
  20. I guess I don't see any reason to believe this number over any other number that's been bandied about (save the fact that I'm feeling pretty [expletive] miserable about this whole situation right now, and this number validates my misery). I don't really care what the bid was. They lost.
  21. I can't speak for Kyle. However, I don't think its a matter of what they should do, but rather what they will do. This has been a pretty brutal offseason. If it suggests anything, it is that the FO is committed to their goals, near-term pain be damned. And their goals include gathering quality prospects at the expense of retaining aging/expensive players. I'd be shocked if they seek to extend him now. Especially when you consider that Samardzija doesn't seem too keen on signing a team-friendly extension. On the bright side, the door swings both ways. Prospects can be dealt for quality players.
  22. Thanks god there are no shootouts in the playoffs.
  23. I was afraid to open this thread today; I assumed I would find that Javy had been mysteriously stricken blind. Damn, some of these guys better come through. Prospect Watch is all we have left...
  24. Why would they even propose the project, then? I'm not saying I disagree with you (this whole matter is very confusing and there is a lot of information we aren't privy to), but why go to the length of rolling out these proposed renovations if the end goal is too drag your feet until the project is dead?
  25. I think it has been communicated (I can't recall where) by his camp that he feels he should receive a bonus of sorts for sticking it out through the rebuilding process.
