  1. I assume that the outcome of last season would inform his decision to do so again (particularly if he did so independent of medical opinion). As you observe, it's not clear that we're even discussing the same medicine(s). The issue of Olt's vision and its treatment has been nebulous from the start. For better or worse, we should gain a more solid sense of what he's capable of over the next few months.
  2. I'm skeptical that Olt would drop his meds (or that the Cubs would let him) unless given advice to do so from multiple physicians. He has so much riding on this season professionally.
  3. I guess if your going to have a fucked up tattoo, it's best to put it somewhere you can't clearly see without a system of mirrors.
  4. Is it OK if it's on the back of the neck?
  5. 2013 average age in the Southern League was 24.1. Although I expect league average age to be higher than "prospect average" age, I always considered Soler age appropriate, if not young for his level. What are the "consensus" (to the extent that they exist) prospect age cutoffs by level for folks around here?
  6. Where 2014 impacts is whether he'll be a FA after 2020 or after 2021. If he's on the big-league roster from opening day 2015 on with the Cubs, 30 days of service time in 2014 makes no difference. But if they don't give him any 2014 service, then two weeks in the minors in 2015 will be enough to delay free agency by a year. If they do use 30 days this September, they'll need to wait an additional 30 days in 2015 before recalling him then, in order to delay the FA. Interesting. That is a little more nuanced than I presumed/understood.
  7. Service time is less of an issue with Soler, though (at least in terms of team controlled years). As I understand it, he can opt out of his 9 year deal upon becoming arb eligible, but he'll still be under team control. He may wind up being more expensive, but if so, that means the cubs have an all-star caliber RF on their roster, and I'm cool with that. I think with Soler that clock issues will be less a deciding factor than preparedness for MLB.
  8. Nice job [expletive] up the pizza thread.
  9. http://imageshack.com/a/img823/607/9bs5.jpg Outside of the spike upon entering AA, the error bars suggest that his K% remained unchanged. The upside of remains, though; he maintained his A+ K% at the AA level. http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/4319/l9wy.jpg Similarly, the BB% is essentially constant (within error bars) at about 7%. I'd be interested to know how the poster generated his/her margins of error. That said, I certainly want to believe in Javy as a patient, selective, home run crushing [expletive]. I'm just not sure we have enough (within this data) to present a definitive trend. Thanks nonetheless, David, for presenting this content.
  10. That's not exactly what we were saying. We were saying that if the Tribune ownership was terrible, and the best you can say about the Ricketts ownership is that it is better in some ways and worse in others, then it's probably in the vicinity of terrible as well. Fair enough. At this stage in the Rickett's ownership, that's tough to argue with. At least we have smart people on the baseball side of things. It could be worse.
  11. My post was more in response to the sentiment (put forth by you, among others) that this organization was somehow better poised for success under Tribune ownership. The trib FO failed to meet that "bare minimum requirement" long after it was standard practice in baseball. I don't know that anyone should be lauded for it, but "modernizing baseball operations" is a rather glib shorthand for completely tearing down and rebuilding a dysfunctional baseball operation, which by all accounts was an accurate representation of the organization in 2011. I'm no more pleased with the state of the MLB club than anyone, but it isn't as though the baseball operations people have spent the past several years playing free cell and cashing checks.
  12. I wish i rooted for a team thats only success over the last 4 years was a potential improvement in minor league instruction. Jokes aside, I think it is easy to forget what a [expletive] show our MiLB system was. A few cases in point from past threads: Link Link
  13. Not sure if this is being discussed elsewhere. Pitchers and catchers report tomorrow. First workout is scheduled for Friday. First game is 2/27 (Full schedule). Cubs 40 man roster: Link Cubs non-roster invitees: Link
  14. I guess I don't have much of a problem with it. Why would you buy out arb/pre-arb years if you're not getting extra year(s) team control at a discounted rate? What am I missing?
  15. It would seem kind of dumb to not have such a policy, no?
  16. [expletive] yes. I lived in St. Louis for about 6 years. Take a frozen pizza crust, smear it with ketchup and vaseline, and you have St. Louis style pizza. The only decent pie in STL is found at Black Thorn, and even that isn't great.
  17. And that computer has a busted enter key. Sounds believable to me.
  18. What with all this crazy Vitters talk, I only just realized that he posted a 11 BB% in AAA last season!* *in 100 PA. Which is close to 120 PA. Which is around where BB% begins to stabilize. So "MAYBE" he's starting to figure [expletive] out?** **Probably not, but that would be amazing. I had pretty much forgot that he existed.
  19. Steve Larmer reference? Steve Larmer reference.
  20. From the contract: The first sentence states that the Cubs can't erect any barrier that would obstruct the rooftop views. The last sentence, were it to be interpreted as you suggest the rooftops might, would be redundant. To read it in that manner would be to say, "Any obstruction of our views is not allowed. Also, any obstruction that the government OKs is not allowed." Draw up a venn diagram. It would be pointless to read/write it that way.
  21. Ahh. Ok, thanks for the clarification.
  22. Wasn't Olt the rumored centerpiece for a 2012 Garza deal?
  23. Christian Villanueva is headed to Iowa, no? If Olt fails to win the 3b job with the MLB club, what becomes of 3b at AAA? Both of those players need reps.
  24. and a crow's nest on top of the jumbotron. I like the direction this is going in.
