  1. I can't agree with you on the kind of liking him part, but you're dead on with his embrace of being the bad guy. His interviews are almost like those mock pro wrestling interviews designed to make you loathe the villain.
  2. I don't understand. Szczur and Jokisch were both taken in 2010 and are now at AAA. Is he complaining that kids taken as recently as 2011 aren't at AAA yet?
  3. Cubs win. A beautiful, glorious, picture-perfect win. Frame it.
  4. One... More... Inning... Then the rains can come.
  5. I thought it was going to slice into the corner for extra bases.
  6. In the wake of the Cubs fantastic 0 for 11 with RISP yesterday... Can anyone explain why the Cubs have been so awful with RISP in 2011-2012-2013? I mean other than the fact that we've had bad hitters. They've been even worse with RISP. The statistical analyses have shown that over time there isn't supposed to be a big statistical difference between batting with RISP and overall. Basically, you're just as good/bad a hitter with RISP as without. Across the leagues the numbers bear this out. BA has stuck right around .253-.255 with RISP and overall since 2010. But the gap between the Cubs performance with RISP and overall has been so pronounced and for such an extended period that there's got to be something else going on. Right? .232 to .256 in 2011 .231 to .240 in 2012 .218 to .238 in 2013
  7. First time I've heard Coomer in the radio booth. First impression: I like him better than Moreland. Seems to already have more chemistry with Pat.
  8. It's to memorialize the year the Soviet Union invaded his homeland.
  9. I'll go 71. We play better than expected to the trade deadline. Say, .485-ish, but are out of the playoff race and trade off, making us drop further off the pace, playing .350-ish the rest of the way. We have a winning record in '15.
  10. The biggest critics of WAR seem to be the people who can't get their head around the notion that the 3rd or 4th best second baseman in the Majors is more valuable than the 18th or 20th best corner outfielder.
  11. The arbitrator reduced the suspension from 211 games to 162. Crazy thing is A Rod has three more years left on that contract after sitting out 2014.
  12. I don't think he'll be cheap, but I've been thinking Phil Hughes seems like a very Theo-esque signing.
  13. So Braun admitted to using PEDs and apologized yesterday. Way to get out in front of the issue there, dude.
  14. Didn't Lance Armstrong threaten to sue everyone left and right as well? Doesn't prove anything to threaten a lawsuit. Not only did Armstrong threaten to sue people, he actually did sue the Sunday Times, and got a chunk of money in an out-of-court settlement. The Times recently demanded their money back.
  15. On one hand, I'm trying to think of one instance in which someone has been publicly and specifically accused of taking PEDs where it hasn't ended up being true. On the other hand, Jack Clark is a pud. On the third hand, Jose Canseco is also a pud, and pretty much everything he's said about people using steroids has been true.
  16. Only 2 runs scored in two games with 22 hits. That doesn't seem possible.
  17. Cubs first 20 games: 6-14, 3.05 runs scored a game, 6 blown saves. Cubs last 72 games: 36-36, 4.4 runs per game, 12 blown saves.
  18. It's pretty crazy. The Cubs' run differential is 5 runs better than the Nationals, and yet they're 4 games behind them in the standings. The Cubs' run differential is 10 better than the Padres, and they're 1.5 games behind them. 13 runs better than the Dodgers and a half game behind, 17 runs better than the Brewers and tied, and 20 runs better than the Phillies and 1.5 games behind.
  19. In the NL, that team was 3rd in Runs, 4th in hits, and 3rd in home runs. Sosa, of course, had a season for the ages. Mark Grace and Henry Rodriguez both had very good years, and - as you mentioned - both Gaetti and Hill posted extraordinary OPS+'s of 154 after arriving mid-season - both arriving via the waiver wire instead of trades believe it or not. The team was also pretty decent defensively, especially in the infield. Still, they also got a bit lucky and outperformed their Pythagorean record by 5 games. (Compare to the agonizing 2004 Cubs that underperformed their Pythagorean by 5.)
  20. As a team, the Cubs have walked just 29 times in the first 13 games. 15 of those walks are from Rizzo and Valbuena. Yikes!
  21. Had a back injury and only ever played one more full season the rest of his career. Ended up trading him to the Astros for Scott Servais and Luis Gonzalez.
  22. All things considered, it's pretty amazing that he never played for the Cardinals.
  23. In 2012, the Cardinals broke a streak of 13 consecutive seasons where they had a former Cubs middle infielder on their roster. Guess they figure it's time to get back up on that horse.
  24. If BR's Similarity Scores are to be believed... The two most similar players to Fred McGriff were Willie McCovey and Willie Stargell. The two most similar players to Curt Schilling were Kevin Brown and Bob Welch.
