  1. MLB is making him take sensitivity training per ESPN. Probably the only thing they can do at this point. Hader’s said all the right things since this hit the news. If he’s smart or has smart people around him, he’ll do the sensitivity training with a smile on his face, come out saying that he learned a lot, apologize again for his past actions, and say he’s going to work to set a good example from now on. If he does that and goes on to be a solid citizen, he’ll have a perfectly fine career and all this will be forgotten. As a relief pitcher for the Brewers it’s probably not like he blew any big endorsement deals or anything. So this probably won’t even hit him too hard in the pocket book.
  2. What does exposing him mean? Fan tunes into the ASG, “Hey, this guy looks cool, I’ll google him... WTF is this? Hey guys, what is this horsefeathers” Is that “exposing” him? I worked for a decade in the criminal justice system. I have to believe that people can learn from their mistakes, change, and grow into better people. I have no idea whether Hader has done so. If he has, he’s going to weather the storm and be just fine. If he hasn’t, he’s due for a pretty rough ride.
  3. fWAR. By bWAR, Machado has three seasons better than Seager’s rookie season. This year, however, Machado’s not on pace for a better season than Seager’s rookie season primarily due to how poorly his defense grades out at SS. Is there some consensus out there that fWAR is better than bWAR? I go to BR more quickly than I do FG, but largely only due to the fact that I find the site easier to navigate.
  4. He’s basically a Corey Seager replacement. Puts them where they would have been had Seager’s arm not fallen off. Curious to see the price and curious to see if the Dodgers pursue Manny in free agency next year. With a healthy Seager, they have the left side of their infield set. But when will Seager be healthy again if ever?
  5. Maintaining his career .741 OPS while piloting the Cards to a third place finish will undoubtedly cement Yadi’s place in the Hall of Fame.
  6. In one more game played, the Cardinals have scored 63 fewer runs and allowed 40 more runs than the Cubs. Greg Holland and Tommy Pham account for the entirety of this disparity.
  7. I travel a lot and everywhere I go, the locals apologize for the weather, and I always laugh, tell them I'm from Illinois, and that the weather is still better here than there. And it always is.
  8. Shhhh! We don’t want Mike getting fired. How deep into the organization does this horsefeathers go, though? Aren’t the chances high that if they fire Matheny, they’ll hire someone more or less just like him to replace him?
  9. The Cubs say no first. And very quickly. Heyward might not live up to his contract. But he’ll come a lot closer to doing so than Fowler. And at least over the next three years, the difference in cost between the two is negligible.
  10. Got 4 all star caliber seasons from Mike Cameron and 2 more almost all star caliber seasons from Randy Winn (by way of Antonio Perez) in exchange for one great season of Griffey and a barely above replacement level rest of his career. But hey, the Reds were eventually able to trade Griffey to the White Sox for Nick Masset.
  11. Now a game under .500 and 5.5 games out of the 2nd wild card. How far out do they have to get before they decide to unload some of those free agents before the deadline? Is there any point they could possibly reach where they’d decide to shop Harper? Of course, the Cubs were 42-43 last year, too, and ended up winning 92 games and the division relatively easily.
  12. Caratini seems like the kind of hitter that would kill it in Coors. Lot of contact. Line drives to all fields. Just sayin’.
  13. Oakland probably thinks they can make the playoffs next year (or even this year if Seattle stops being stupid lucky - they’re the freaking AL version of the Brewers), meaning they probably only sell a long term asset like Treinan if the other team pays through the nose.
  14. Figure Bryce Harper will get the SunTrust Park record for a long time if he re-signs with the Nats. If he doesn’t... Who? Hoskins with the Phillies?
  15. As of about two weeks ago it looked like there was at least a chance for the Indians to piss away the AL Central to the Twins or Tigers. But they’ve won 10 of 15 and suddenly look pretty solid there.
  16. Luckily haven’t had any back problems since my kids got old enough that I didn’t have to carry them anywhere. I used to make fun of “turf toe” until I got it. Slid my foot on some ice while delivering a combo washer-dryer set about ten years ago. It’s a dislocated big toe. Pretty much ended my running habit. Had to switch to weights for exercise. The sumbitch still hurts occasionally on random days. Now when I hear about a football player who might miss a game because of turf toe, I wonder how they can even walk, let alone play a football game.

  18. My order of preference would be... 1. Both leagues use no DH. 2. Both leagues use some sort of compromise rule like a “designated pinch hitter” who could bat three times in a game without the player he’s batting for having to come out. 3. Both leagues use the DH (Big space.) 4. Things stay the same as they are now. It’s absurd, especially since year round inter-League play began, that the two leagues have different rules. It’s as if the NBA’s Eastern conference had a three point line and the Western conference didn’t. I know both Leagues going the NL route is a pipe dream. And I don’t have any faith in baseball’s leadership to come up with a creative compromise solution. So I’m pretty resigned to the fact that the DH is coming to the NL. The sooner the better for me.
  19. It’s clearly affecting him as he’s on pace for a 4.8 WAR season.
  20. It’s kind of weird that Machado is less valuable as a shortstop than as a 3rd baseman, but it looks like his defense there is just that bad. bWAR, he and Russell have both put up 1.9 WAR seasons thus far. fWAR is 2.8 to 1.4. Even if you trust fWAR more than bWAR, that’s not enough difference to trade straight up, let alone Russell+ for half a year of Machado.
  21. I was thinking in terms of the second WC spot. Which the Angels are currently 6 games out of.
  22. And six games out of the playoffs. Hopefully that on-paper mediocre Seattle team comes down to earth a bit and Trout has a chance at a playoff run. Baseball is better when its best players are in the playoff chase and this is pretty easily the Angel’s best team in 4 or 5 years even without Ohtani.
  23. 3.2 IP, 4H, 7BB, 5R on 96 pitches.
  24. Let the Kelvin Herrera rumors commence...
  25. ... It’s... It’s been one horsefeathering season. They went to the NLCS last year for horsefeathering sakes!!! What the duck is he talking about?!?
